00:01The 18th BRICS Leader Summit is on the way in New Delhi, India.
00:04The Saudi member states adopted the New Delhi Decoration on the first day
00:08as BRICS leaders address issues of global interest and expand their cooperation partnerships.
00:13Our special envoy, Yunus On Air, is in the city with all the details of this first day of sessions
00:20and debates.
00:21Welcome Yunus to From the South once more.
00:26Hello, good evening from New Delhi, from the capital city of India,
00:31where the 18th summit of the BRICS Alliance is continuing on its heads of state at government level.
00:41The leaders have convened today here in New Delhi for a closed session on the topic of more global governance,
00:52more inclusive global governance and strengthening multilateralism.
00:57And that was the first point in their final declaration that they agreed upon.
01:03They demanded both in speeches and in the declaration the strengthening of the multilateral system starting with the United Nations.
01:14They said that a reform of the UN and its Security Council is due, absolutely due, and demanded a permanent
01:25seat for the south of the world.
01:28That included the African countries, Latin American countries' demand on that regard.
01:34It was left a little bit open who should get that seat.
01:40There is an action in Brazil.
01:42There is an aspiration in India, obviously.
01:44South Africa is also ambitious on that matter.
01:47That was left open.
01:48But they said the global south deserves the right to be represented much better, both in the UN Security Council
01:58and beyond that.
01:59They also demanded a reform of the IMF, the World Bank, and a broader participation for the global south in
02:07these institutions, too.
02:08They also said that the financial system has to be reformed, that the financial system also needs a better representation
02:17of the BRICS countries.
02:19They called for a reform of IMF quotas and stronger financial global safety nets.
02:26That was another demand that they voiced.
02:29And, of course, everybody was curious about how they would react to the ongoing wars in West Asia, the U
02:38.S. aggression against Iran, the situation around Palestine.
02:42They condemned the genocide against the Palestinian people and demanded, again, the two-state solution.
02:51In regards to the aggression against Iran, they did not mention the war by itself.
02:59But they called on all parties to protect civilians, to stay away from targeting infrastructure, to stay away from targeting
03:09nuclear infrastructure.
03:11Remember that the U.S. has bombed nuclear facilities in Iran.
03:16They condemned this as well, and they demanded that all sides avoid any further escalation and called for a diplomatic
03:29solution to that conflict.
03:31In that context, very important breaking news is that the Iranian President, Mesut Pezeshkian, who is here on the summit,
03:40has met just an hour ago with his counterpart from the United Arab Emirates, the Prince Mohammed bin Zayed.
03:50That's important because the UAE has been on the opposing side, has been advocating for a quite aggressive position against
03:58Iran.
03:59But now the two leaders have met here on the BRICS summit.
04:03Some call this Indian mediation.
04:06Some say that BRICS will have a bigger role in the future of this conflict as a mediator.
04:12We have to recall and remember our audience that the Chinese President Xi Jinping also recently has visited Egypt.
04:21The capital of Egypt, Cairo, met with the Egyptian President, who is here as well.
04:26So it may be an attempt for a new diplomatic attempt to find the solution for the conflict.
04:35We will have to see that.
04:36But this meeting itself is definitely quite noteworthy.
04:41Other statements in the by the leaders refer to the BRICS organization itself.
04:47In his speech, the anfitri on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had called for the establishment of a permanent mechanism
04:57of implementation and follow up for BRICS decisions.
05:01And he also called to turn the organization into a more efficient one.
05:07So these reforms were also discussed in the final statement that calls for a more practical integration.
05:15It calls for for better implication of decisions taken and for maintaining the consensus principle, maintaining the unity of the
05:28Alliance.
05:28This unity was tested today, actually, due to the conflict in West Asia, because two of its members of the
05:36Alliance's members, Iran and the UAE, stand on the opposing sides of this conflict.
05:43And they are still both members of the BRICS.
05:46So in that sense, the ability to find the consensus, to find and to be able to make a final
05:55declaration, including this issue, though not naming it maybe very explicitly, is considered here as a success and may open,
06:04as I mentioned, the way to further intervention, diplomatic intervention of BRICS countries,
06:09including India, including China and others, into the conflict ongoing around the Strait of Hormuz and in West Asia.
06:18Thank you, Yunus, for the detailed information on the importance.
06:21committee and do this work on all I bring a different portal.
06:21Thank you, Yunus.
06:22Actually that goes into this work a different perspective,
