00:19Welcome back. The 18th Brexit Leaders Summit is underway in New Delhi, India. At the summit,
00:25British leaders seek to practically consolidate the geopolitical and economic influence of the
00:30Global South. Our special envoy, Junos Sonner, is in the city and has more details. Welcome, Junos,
00:37to South from the South. Hello, good afternoon from the city of Delhi, here in India, where the second
00:47day of the British summit of the heads of state and the heads of government started following,
00:55it's the second day, the day of yesterday, the day of Saturday, has finished with the final
01:04declaration of the heads of state, who made a strong statement against unipolarity, unilateralism,
01:13and measures associated with that. They rejected aggressions, military aggressions. They rejected
01:21unilateral tariffs. They rejected sanctions and other coercive measures in the international system.
01:29And in exchange against that, they demanded in their final declaration, as well as in their speeches
01:36held by the leaders in the session in the afternoon, they demanded a more inclusive international
01:43order, United Nations reform, including Security Council reform, also reform of institutions such as
01:51the International Monetary Fund, IMF, or the World Bank redistribution of voting rights there. So, in sum,
02:00they demanded yesterday, the BRICS members, a more multipolar world, or the recognition of the fact of
02:08multipolarity by these international institutions. Noteworthy that the U.S. Secretary Bernal, Antonio Guterres,
02:15was also present at that meeting. Today's agenda is amplifying this idea, this position to more members,
02:26because today the BRICS members will meet both the partner countries of the BRICS and other countries that
02:33are not even partner countries, but that are interested in developing ties and connections with the BRICS countries.
02:41These are the two main sessions that will take place today, and their basic idea is exactly the
02:49prolongation, the amplification, the deepening of yesterday's idea of the multipolarity of the global
02:56south, because a number of these countries are also very much affected by sanctions and coercive measures.
03:06For instance, Cuba is one of them, but there are also others such as Belarus and others that are
03:12subject to sanctions and pressures by the western system. So, this idea of a better representation of the
03:20global south on the global south. On the level of international politics, rejection of these coercive
03:26measures will be on the agenda, as well as better coordination and integration between the countries of
03:33the south. For instance, the declaration of yesterday has made a statement regarding better options of finance
03:41for countries of global south for countries of global south. It detected that financing is a bottleneck for the
03:50economies of global south and that there should be new measures introduced by the BRICS organization, the new
03:59development bank as well, to open up facilities of finance for small and medium enterprises. So, these issues will also
04:08be on the
04:08agenda today, as well as general other new issues such as artificial intelligence technologies and supply chain problems.
04:17Of course, there will be a number of bilateral meetings that will also touch upon issues like energy
04:23security, energy cooperation, the transport corridors, because for a number of these countries, these partner countries or the
04:31invited one, the third category, this is also seen a kind of small United Nations led by friendly powers where
04:41they have the chance to
04:42express themselves on an international level and they will make use of that.
04:47Junius, you were talking about about the U.S. coercive measures against Cuba, but not only against Cuba. The U
04:56.S. has imposed
04:57measures in many other countries. In this context, BRICS member countries continue to advance discussions on
05:04the de-dollarization, particularly amid the United States growing use of financial sanctions. Could these measures
05:10accelerate BRICS efforts to fully implement an alternative payment and financial mechanism, especially for the global south?
05:24For the time being, de-dollarization has slowed down a bit on the BRICS. This is something we have to
05:30state.
05:31The idea of creating BRICS currency is still circulating, but it's not really on the main agenda. What is more
05:39introduced is the strengthening of trade in national currencies. Of course, here, those members who have a strong currency,
05:49you have an internationalized currency, such as China, obviously, but also the Russian ruble or the Indian
05:56rupee, which by the size of their economy are also important, but also the Brazilian real are candidates
06:03for being used more widely in their geographies. So this is one idea that is more discussed. And also the
06:11second
06:11idea is enabling better financing for trade exchange and currency exchanges. There was an important proposal by the
06:24Iranian President, who is here too in this summit, who said that BRICS countries needed to establish a mechanism against
06:33currency
06:34crisis. So there will be crises induced by these U.S. sanctions. Iran is one of them. Iran is facing
06:42sanctions,
06:43which deteriorate the country's currency. So there is the proposal that on BRICS level and on the level of New
06:51Development Bank, there will be mechanisms to support countries facing financial crisis in result of sanctions or
07:02foreign induced crisis. But concrete results on that, that remains to be seen. Here, it's not worthy that the
07:11President of the BRICS this year, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, yesterday made a proposal. He made a
07:18proposal of
07:19establishing a mechanism of continuation and implementation of decisions taken on these summits. So maybe if that proposal is taken
07:31serious and serious and it is connected with these ideas regarding economic and financial integration in
07:38South-South, in rejection and creating an alternative or a defense line against sanctioned policies, then we might see
07:45some concrete steps, but that remains to be seen. Well, thank you, Yunus, for the latest information regarding this
07:5418th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, India. Thank you for your time with us. We will reach you again in
08:01a coming news brief.
