00:00Beyond congressional races, voters across the U.S. will decide nearly 150 ballot measures
00:06that could reshape health care, taxes, campaign finance and local investment policies.
00:12We join Dan Albright in Boston.
00:16Beyond the races for Congress, voters across the U.S. will also decide nearly 150 ballot
00:22measures Tuesday, some with major consequences.
00:25In California, for example, Proposition 40 would impose a one-time 5% tax on the wealth
00:31of the state's roughly 200 billionaires, with most of the money going to health care.
00:36Bernie Sanders traveled to the state multiple times for high-profile rallies in its favor,
00:41while Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom, seen as a likely 2028 presidential candidate,
00:47has been campaigning against it.
00:50And in solidly blue states like here in Massachusetts, where federal races aren't
00:55especially competitive, ballot questions are some of the only places on the ballot where
00:59voters have the most impact.
01:01The closest race here is question 5, which would put a tighter cap on state revenue.
01:07Opponents warn it could squeeze already strained local budgets, threatening recent gains on taxing
01:12the wealthy to help fund schools.
01:14But politically, especially as the cost of living is top of mind for people, it could be
01:19hard for voters to see a tax cut and turn it down.
01:22In Providence, voters will decide on a historic binding measure whether to divest city funds
01:29from companies and countries tied to genocide and occupation, as Democratic Socialist David
01:35Morales is expected to become mayor.
01:38Elsewhere, Nebraska voters could bring online sports betting to the state, while Montana voters
01:43are deciding whether to restrict corporate political spending.
01:47So even where the candidate races may seem predictable, some of the biggest policy changes may come
01:54from the voters themselves.
