00:37I do think, like, you hear that, that call.
00:41There's so many takeaways from last night,
00:43but I think you're hard-pressed as a Niner fan for this to not be the number one thing.
00:50Last year, the defensive line couldn't do anything.
00:54They could not sack the quarterback.
00:56They were last in the entire NFL.
00:58The run defense was shoddy at best.
01:01How did that team win 12 games?
01:03I don't know.
01:04That's one of the crazy things that took place last year.
01:07But last night, with Nick Bosa back, Osa Idigizua in the spot.
01:13Plus, by the way, let's not leave out some of the young kids that have come to play.
01:19Grayson Halton in the fifth round looks like the Niners nailed the round again.
01:23He looks really good, and he's going to be a big key this year.
01:28And the defensive line, while not perfect, looked like a viable defensive line.
01:35Raheem Morris had them positioned right.
01:37The aggression level was right.
01:39They rushed the quarterback.
01:40They made Stafford uncomfortable at times, and they stuffed run plays when they really needed to at times on third,
01:47and they're on fourth and short.
01:49That has to be the most exciting X's and O's thing to me.

02:01I'm with Stiney, and I wasn't doing a crossword at the time.
02:04I was locked in on the game, but I can't believe that they actually didn't get in there.
02:09And you watched the replay, and they checked it on the field, and you looked at it again and again
02:13and again, as my daughter would say, again and again.
02:17And I thought, like, how did he not get in?
02:20Yeah, but he definitely didn't.
02:21I mean, once they finally gave us that goal line view, you're like, oh, yeah, no, he's not in.
02:25Right.
02:26Like, there was no part of his body that got to the goal line.
02:29And Luke Keighley with the helmet circle, I appreciate that, and you can't see his arms.
02:32And I guess Matthew Stafford is not so good at, you know, extending the ball or doing what you're supposed
02:38to do in that spot.
02:39And, like, why not go with the tush-push?
02:42As much as I think the play is kind of lame and it's not really football, but let's get somebody
02:47really big behind Matthew Stafford,
02:49and let's just push him in the end zone.
02:52I think you have to practice that play, though.
02:54Like, I don't even know all of the—
02:56Well, then practice it.

02:57But if I've got Matt Stafford as opposed to a Jalen Hurts, I don't know if that's what I want

03:03And the Niners don't run it.
03:04The Rams don't run it.
03:05I mean, there's something strategic about short yardage.
03:10And, you know, Brock Purdy is really good at sneaking.
03:12Yeah, and the Bills don't run it either because that man is just a monster.
03:15Like, Josh Allen, I don't need anyone pushing on me.
03:18But Matt Stafford is 38 and not as athletic.
03:21And so I don't know if that works for them.
03:24My question would be, you know, like, you were running up the middle pretty well.
03:29Like, Blake Corum is a good short yardage red zone back.
03:35I would hope that you would have the faith to just hand him the ball on fourth and half of
03:39a yard.
03:40But they did it their way.
03:41Right.
03:42And that was wonderful.
03:43And even before that, like, I heard the broadcasters, Noah Eagle and the aforementioned Luke Keekly.
03:48They're talking about Devontae Adams, amazing in the red zone.
03:51What a threat.
03:52And he's on the sideline.
03:53And he came in for the third down play.
03:55And then the fourth down play, he was back on the sideline.
03:57And so, I don't know, maybe you want to throw it to a guy who is one of, I think
04:02the list is eight players all time to have a thousand catches and a hundred touchdowns.
04:08And Devontae Adams is one of them.
04:09Yeah.
04:10Maybe give him a look in the red zone.
04:12Well, listen, it's what they did last year.
04:14I don't think that he was open.
04:16I, you know, like Matt Stafford did not have a lot of time.
04:20Devontae Adams got completely taken out of the game.
04:24Puka Naku, it was weird, actually.
04:26The Rams offense, which on paper, which was everybody's favorite phrase all year, on paper, the Rams offense seems very
04:34scary.
04:35Oh, we got this three tight end look.
04:36You got these two elite wide receivers.
04:38You got a two-headed monster in the backfield and the MVP at quarterback.
04:43Within moments, this game sort of looked like, oh, well, there's Puka.
04:48Puka, that's it.
04:50Puka, nobody, Devontae, not scary.
04:54The three tight ends, non-existent.
04:57Kyron Williams, a few nice runs up the middle, but like.
05:00More Blake Corum, though, than Kyron Williams, honestly.
05:03Both of them are like solid, but it didn't terrify you.
05:07And so it just felt like, it quickly felt like Puka was the Steph Curry of the offense.
05:14Take him out of the game and we're done here.
05:17That's kind of what the whole thing ended up feeling like.

05:27Let me run through a couple things.
05:29First of all, and most importantly, maybe on Cal, I hit all my parlays and every prop minus one.
05:35So it was a good night all around for me.
05:38Dead Flicks, I'm going to give them a D minus.
05:41The thing that upset me about that broadcast is it's like they refused to show close-ups of the crowd
05:46unless I missed it.
05:47They showed pan-outs of seas of red, but it's like they didn't have enough cameras to zoom into fans,
05:52which I think would have been interesting because I don't know what an Australian football fan even looks like.
05:57So I thought that was a big miss for them.
05:59But I saw a bunch of pictures of rocks in the ocean, you know, next to a beach, but no
06:04pictures of fans.
06:05So I was disappointed by that.
06:07Look, I think there was two things that I thought were notable.
06:11The first is obviously was Kyle actually trying to save a healthy CMC because 10 carries to me is inconceivable.
06:18I never thought I would see something like that.
06:20Obviously, I'm grateful for it and I'm relieved for it.
06:23But it's almost it was just inexplicable to me how little usage CMC got, which is, again, a great thing
06:29for Niners fans.
06:31And then travel, no travel.
06:32Dude, the Rams were out prepared.
06:34I mean, they should feel fortunate that they can point to a bad travel planning as an excuse.
06:39And of course, they're going to get better.
06:41But it doesn't matter if the Rams touchdown in Oz in like mid-August.
06:45They were out coached and they were out executed.
06:47And I refuse to make that beat down about a travel issue.
06:51But finally, what is the most gratifying thing for me is that we got to see what a fully healthy
06:57Niner team looks like.
06:58Not what it could be, but what it is.
07:01Not a vision in our heads, you know, but a reality of what we got to see with our eyes.
07:06And I know the league took notice, even if the sports, you know, talking pundits and talking heads didn't.
07:12And so that's what's so gratifying that we got to actually see what a complete team looks like.
07:18And thank goodness that we're fans of the best team in the league.

07:25How does the whole Christian McCaffrey, Kalon Black thing grab you?
07:29Well, I mean, it grabs me like it grabbed Christian McCaffrey and stuff where, you know, came out.
07:34And I'm looking at Nick Wagoner on Twitter and stuff.
07:37And, you know, Christian was playing through some cramps and stuff.
07:39And so that's why even when you had McCaffrey out there for a play or two, he would come out
07:46and they'd put in Kalon Black.
07:47I don't think that that's going to be the norm.
07:49Now, will Black get a healthy amount of carries?
07:52I do believe so.
07:53But I think that yesterday was more about McCaffrey getting cramps.
07:57And, you know, normally McCaffrey gets like a whole series and then you go to the backup and whatever.
08:02I don't know what it's going to be like this year and stuff.
08:04But I do know that yesterday the reporters, David Lombardi, our guy, and Nick Wagoner, they all reported what Kyle
08:11Shanahan said and stuff, which is that he had cramps and stuff.
08:14And he looked good while he was out there.
08:17I think this is such an incredibly positive development with what we saw yesterday.
08:22I'm with you.
08:23The idea that Christian would have fewer carries than Kalon Black, I think that's going to be rare.
08:27I don't think that's the plan.
08:29But to me, I look past that.
08:31I look past that on multiple fronts.
08:34First of all, the 49ers now do have what we've asked for all offseason, which is an option to give
08:39Christian a little bit of a break.
08:41Get this whole offense off of his shoulders.
08:43It's not even just Kalon Black.
08:45It's the receivers.
08:46It's all the options Brock Purdy has.
08:48But the presence of Kalon Black and what we saw him do yesterday in his first NFL game to me
08:53is just massively significant.
08:55A, it's going to give Christian McCaffrey a little bit of a break.
08:59It's going to keep him healthier throughout the season.
09:01But B, let's look at two other things.
09:03This whole, the Niners drafting running backs in the third round thing finally has an opportunity to be a get
09:10the monkey off the back situation for Kyle Shanahan.
09:13I'm liking it early.
09:14They finally have one they like.
09:16And by the way, the part that really gets me is they liked him so much that they were willing
09:23to deactivate Jordan James.
09:25I know that that effectively means they're going to use Debo as running back three in this offense.
09:31But I thought the whole way this came out in the box score, but also even just on the roster
09:38was a huge red sign from Kyle Shanahan that said, we really like and trust Kalon Black to run the
09:47ball, to pass block, to catch passes out of the backfield.
09:53We trust, trust, trust Kalon Black.
09:57All the talk about rookies was Dajon Stribling.
10:00I think they're probably as excited about Kalon Black.
10:02Probably more excited now.
10:04And I don't know the extent of the Dajon Stribling injury, but he didn't even record a catch, if I'm
10:10not mistaken.
10:11I don't even think he recorded a target.
10:12However, he was leading the team in snaps while he was out there.
10:16Okay, which is, I mean, that's great.
10:18I mean, but ultimately, depending on how bad the, quote, high ankle injury is, he might be a candidate to
10:26go on IR to designate to return down the road.
10:30Because one thing about Jordan James is this team puts you in a little bit of a roster crunch.
10:35So if you're not going to be the backup running back, if you're going to be RB3, well, then you
10:40had better be somebody who could be a special teamer.
10:42And I don't think that Jordan James is that.
10:44And even if you look at the total snaps taken by Niners, and I was looking at this earlier, you
10:50have about seven or eight or nine guys who were special teams only.
10:55And some of them are offensive linemen, and they were on the, you know, PAT and the field goal team.
11:00And you've got guys like Luke Gifford, who played 13 snaps only, all on special teams.
11:06And Saran Neal, who actually was kind of in on every single special teams tackle.
11:11So you already have a bunch of guys who you're not going to play elsewhere.
11:15And so if Jordan James isn't one of them, then he can't play.
11:19Yeah, that's like why Kaderil Hodge was called up from the practice squad.
11:22Special teams.
11:23And I know that, you know, sometimes we don't know what the role is for those players who are kind
11:28of low on the roster pecking order.
11:30But it's a good point.
11:32That's why this all came together.
11:33But to me, there's no way around the fact that it was a huge sign of trust that this team
11:39has in a rookie.
11:40And for a coach, and one of his characteristics, what he's known for is not trusting rookies.
11:46To have Stribbling out there leading the team in snaps and have Black run the role that he had for
11:51the entire game yesterday,
11:53I think blew that narrative up pretty good, at least for the start of this season.
11:57Yeah, no doubt.
11:57Hopefully, Steve Kerr was watching the game and had his notepad out and, you know, taking notes on how you
12:03actually use young people.
12:04This is how you don't hate young people.

15:43But I don't think that any of that.
15:45Now, it's all like fodder for us and for fans and for the national media because it's interesting.
15:50It's different.
15:51An owner gets popped.
15:53The coach gets in a crash.
15:55And your former top wide receiver is out there Instagramming his butt off.
15:59These are all interesting things.
16:00And people won't let go of the substation either.
16:03I'm not going to call all of them irrelevant.
16:05The Jed York thing is not.
16:06Don't forget about Dijon Love.

16:11I just don't think any of it's relevant to football.
16:14So, you know, even the Jed York thing, where do people go with that?
16:17It's like, well, ownership structure might get wobbly.
16:20And maybe that will lead to them wanting to sell.
16:24Or maybe that will lead Kyle Shanahan to want to leave.
16:27And it's such wild speculation because all of this was being said under the covers of the fact that Kyle
16:35Shanahan already signed an extension.
16:36And, oh, by the way, Kyle, even last night, talked about how much he loves this organization.
16:42And when he spoke about Jed York after that incident, he spoke about it in a very compassionate and personal
16:50way.
16:51He cares about Jed and his soon-to-be ex-wife and his kids and the whole family.
16:56Like, I just, I've never really understood why you'd grab all of those social media topics and think that they
17:03were going to affect 49ers, X's, and O's.
17:06And that is one part I am thankful this morning, this afternoon.
17:11I feel like we can put that to bed.
17:14Are they going to be healthy?
17:15I have no idea.
17:17But they're going to be focused.
17:19They're able to play football through all of the things that weren't really things.
17:23And even if the ownership thing is still wobbly, and we don't really know, and maybe they will wind up
17:30selling the team.
17:31That was Joe Shasky from The Morning Roast.

17:35And he could be right.
17:36But even if that happens, I don't think that that would affect the way that the team goes about playing
17:42the following Sunday.

17:44These pro football players, and you've talked about this a lot, and, you know, your time with Ephraim Salaam on
17:48the Sunday show is very, I think, informative in this vein, where you go out there and you're playing this
17:56game where it kind of is life or death.
17:59I mean, that might be a little dramatic, but people have died playing the sport.
18:03Like, you're not going to worry about your owner out there with 160 bucks in East Ohio.
18:07It's a fully focused on right now type of a business, which is why can I also – there's another
18:13take today that's really funny to me.
18:15Well, the Rams actually, what they care about is actually like week five.
18:19Like, they're so good that they didn't want to put too much into this game because they didn't actually care
18:25about this game because what they want to do is actually be good next week.

18:30First of all, again, I don't think you can outrun jet lag.
18:33So it's not like the Rams are unaffected by all of this.
18:36And the idea that any football team would be so arrogant as to say we're so good that we do
18:44not need a home division game against a playoff team from last year.
18:52We don't even need it.
18:53We don't even need to care about it.
18:55We're so good.
18:56If you think that way, I don't think the Rams do think that way, but if they did, they'll miss
19:00the playoffs.
19:02That's stupid.
19:03That is suicidal in professional sports to be that arrogant.

19:11I don't know if that was the arrogance of their approach.
19:15I think that their approach was, you know, we think that we can, quote, get away with it, land and

19:23And we'll find out, as you mentioned before, they have an extra day.
19:26They play a week from Monday against the Giants, but then it's a short week going to Denver.
19:32So no matter what happens in that first game back, you still have a short week and you have to
19:37go to Denver.
19:37And I don't know if even if your jet lag is done by then, you still have a shorter week
19:43and you're going to altitude.
19:44So that's never easy.

20:13situation, but an MRI is scheduled.
20:16I think we'll get some news over the weekend on Dajon, but there is at least a fingers crossed chance.
20:23This is something like a high ankle sprain.
20:26AJ Brown just went on AIR today with a high ankle sprain.
20:30So he misses at least four games.
20:32High ankle sprains are no joke.
20:34I don't think we're going to see Dajon at least for the month of September.
20:38That would be my guess, but there's hope.
20:41There's hope that he has not lost his entire rookie season.
