25:57and how it came from the Latin candidus, meaning white,
26:00and candidates in Roman times wearing white togas to show their honesty, etc.
26:05Well, a similar word is frank.
26:07We all want to be frank, to be open and candid.
26:10But to call yourself frank these days is to link yourself
26:12with the Germanic people who conquered Gaul in 500 AD.
26:16So it goes back a very, very long way.
26:18They gave them, these people were called the franks,
26:21and they gave their name to modern France, of course,
26:23and to the currency that is the frank.
26:25But they were named, the franks, after their preferred weapon,
26:28which was a spear, a pretty lethal spear called a franker.
26:32But after the conquest of Gaul, full political freedom
26:36was granted only to the franks or to those who they thought worthy.
26:40And that's why frank came to be used as an adjective meaning free.
26:43And also there was a little note of superiority in there.
26:47So they were not only free, but they were also slightly better than anybody else.
26:51And of course, when frank came over into English, it meant free as well.
26:56And it was only later, over the centuries, that free began to mean liberal.
27:00And if you were liberal, you were likely to be more open and honest,
27:03hence the candid sense that we have today.
27:06There are other related words in English.
27:08Frankincense comes from the old French, meaning it was franc-en-sense,
27:13which meant superior incense.
27:16That was where frankincense came from.
27:18And frank, as I said, the French unit of currency,
27:20that comes from the Latin phrase francorum rex, king of the franks,
27:24because that appeared on the coins minted during the 14th century.
27:27The ruler was Jean Le Bon at that stage.
27:30But who would know that, to be frank, these days,
27:32to be open and honest goes all the way back to 500 AD.
