00:31Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown Studio on our first and last day here in the Countdown Studio, because
00:38tomorrow we go to Goodwood, glorious Goodwood, the racing, the horse racing at glorious Goodwood.
00:43And talking of sport, it was 50 years ago this weekend that one of the most memorable football matches took
00:50place.
00:50Of course, real history. Remember the line, they think it's all over. It is now.
00:56Of course, those words we've all heard many, many, many times were spoken on the 30th of July 1966 by
01:03the great Kenneth Wolstenholm when England beat Germany 4-2 in extra time.
01:09And I remember watching that as a young guy in a pub in Trafalgar Square when there was a pub
01:14in Trafalgar Square.
01:15And it was just great fun before your time. But come on, you must have had memories of favourite World
01:22Cup moments.
01:23I liked that. I remember the 2002 World Cup career in Japan.
01:27Yes.
01:28It was on so early that you had to go before breakfast.
01:30So I remember going there really early down the pub and it was the days of, it was Beckham and
01:35Scholes and Sheringham and Owen.
01:37And then even on the Brazil side was our last game and got knocked out.
01:40They had Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho. I mean, it was amazing. Those were the days.
01:45Yeah.
01:46And of course, the first group of players you mentioned are all your beautiful Man United players.
01:53Yeah.
01:53That great team.
01:54Other teams were represented as well. But, you know, that's what sticks in my mind.
01:57I bet. I bet. And you're wearing red. Just to recall that time.
02:01Now then, who have we got with us, Rachel? We've got Aidan Lynch back.
02:04Three times winner now from Thetford in Norfolk. Big sports fan. Loves his history.
02:09Memorable moment. Was clambering all over the battlefields of the First World War in northern France in the Somme Valley.
02:19Terrible place. But still, we all need to keep visiting those places and remembering what a mess it was
02:25and how we must avoid having another one, frankly.
02:28And you're joined by Chris Leaney from Chalgrove in Oxfordshire.
02:31Chris is an economic student at the University of Bath.
02:34You once hitchhiked to Paris with a friend, but then got yourself into trouble catching a ferry across the channel.
02:40What's the story behind that?
02:42We did. So we'd been stuck in Dover for a while.
02:44And then a Dutch man pulled over and said, I can get you onto the ferry.
02:48It was a very foggy day, though. And the ferry was delayed.
02:51He left his lights on. So then the battery died.
02:55We then dressed as Mario and Luigi.
02:57My friend and I had to push the car onto the ferry.
03:00Yes.
03:01While sort of buses of French schoolchildren were going past.
03:04So then once we got on the ferry, we had to have photos for almost the whole ferry journey
03:08with these French schoolchildren rather than getting a lift.
03:10I can imagine. Why were you dressed as Mario and Luigi?
03:13It was a charity pitch event where we were just trying to raise money.
03:18Did it work?
03:19It did work. Yeah, we raised over £500.
03:22Oh, good for you.
03:23All right. Big round of applause then for Mario, Luigi and Aidan Lenge.
03:27Well done.
03:32And as soon as you've joined once again, having had our trust a peaceful weekend,
03:36the wonderful David James, now a football pundit, but of course once upon a time,
03:41well, over a thousand appearances and a great record too, I'm told.
03:46Some of it was pretty good, actually, yeah.
03:48Ten domestic teams across the world, Iceland and India as well, yeah.
03:53Very good.
03:54Anyway, more from you later. Aidan, it's a letters game.
03:57Hi, Rachel.

05:04Aidan, six. Format.
05:07And Chris? Profit.
05:10And in the corner, can we match or even beat six?
05:14I've only got format two.
05:16All right, and Susie?
05:17It was a tough one, this one.
05:19Utopia is there as well for six,
05:21but last minute seven, a Fumart, F-O-U-M-A-R-T,
05:27an old-fashioned term for a polecat.
05:29Really?
05:30A Fumart.
05:31Really?
05:32Yeah.
05:33Now then, it's six apiece, and Chris, it's your letters game.
05:37Good afternoon, Rachel.
05:38Afternoon, Chris.
05:39Can I have a consonant, please?
05:40You can indeed, thank you. Start with V.

06:42Yes, Chris? Seven. A seven? Seven. Two sevens. Chris? Stroked. Now then. Roasted. Roasted? Yeah.
06:52Yeah, very good. Any sevens in the corner? There is a seven there. It's South African and it's futzak.
07:00Be careful how you use it, because it means go away, get out of here. Futzak.
07:06Does it come from the Dutch, from the Boer? From Afrikaans, yeah. Afrikaans, yeah.
07:10Yeah. Well, thank you for that. You're welcome. We'll use it as often as possible.
07:1413 points apiece, and now it's a numbers game. First of the day. Aidan?
07:19Hi, Rachel. Can I have two large, please? You can, indeed. Thank you, Aidan.
07:22First of the week, in fact. Two large, four little, and they are three, five, nine, one, 75, and 50.
07:34And the target? 111. One, one, one.
08:09One, one, one, one.
08:10111, Chris? One, one, one. Aidan?
08:14Um, 75 out of 50 is one, two, five.
08:16Yeah. And take off the nine and the five.
08:19Well done. One, one, one, one.
08:20Chris? Yeah. Same way. Same way.
08:22Yep.
08:23OK.
08:24So here we are, 23 apiece.
08:2823 apiece.
08:30As we lurch into our first teatime teaser, which is I Endless.
08:34And the clue, I endlessly lie around all day doing nothing.
08:38I'm prone to this, said Billy.
08:40I endlessly lie around all day doing nothing.
08:43I'm prone to this, said Billy.
09:01Welcome back.
09:02I lived with the clue.
09:03I endlessly lie around all day long doing nothing.
09:05I'm prone to this, said Billy.
09:08And the answer is idleness.
09:13Idleness.
09:14Really idle there.
09:15So 23 apiece, and it's Chris's letters game.
09:18Chris?

10:39Erm, no, not there in bounties, but no bunties, sorry.
10:46What can you have, David and Susie?
10:50Well, I had a subtle six.
10:52Yes.
10:53Nice.
10:55But Susie came out with something more useful, a utensil.
10:59Very good.
11:00A utensil.
11:01Yes.
11:01Very good.
11:02All right.
11:0229 to 23.
11:04Chris has taken a six-point lead.
11:06An unusual situation for Aidan to find himself in as he goes into a letters game himself.

12:16Aidan? Lone. Now then, Chris? Wanda.
12:19And Wanda. We happy?
12:24Yes. Well, not so happy with that selection. It wasn't the nicest.
12:27What have you turned up? David? For six as well, a loner.
12:33A loner. Susie, anything else? That was it, I'm afraid.
12:37All right. Sorry. All right, 35 plays, 29.
12:41And now, Chris, maintaining your lead, it's your numbers game.
12:45Can I get two from the top, please, Rachel, and any other four?
12:48Thank you, Chris. Two large, four, little ones.

13:59see whether
14:00Rachel couldn't get there a different way obviously 906 is that possible Rachel if you say 10 divided by
14:082 is 5 add it to the 75 and add it to the 50 for 130 and then times that
14:17by 7 for 910 and take away
14:19the 4 minus fabulous well done indeed now we turn to David and David we were talking earlier on about
14:32the 1966 World Cup 50 years ago now but you've had some great footballing achievements winning the FA
14:39Cup for instance that must have been one of them indeed I mean playing for your country is the
14:44ultimate you know being able to to represent your country abroad especially in World Cups was was
14:52an amazing achievement and very proud of it but a domestic level winning the FA Cup was an amazing
14:59an amazing not just the day but an amazing time in my in my life because having played in two
15:06previous
15:07FA Cups and lost I was part of a Portsmouth side which we talk about boring football and those who
15:14watched the Euros and thought that it wasn't the most entertaining well we had six games
15:19five 1-0s and a 2-1 which in most standards is quite boring football but um yeah we played
15:26uh we played
15:27Cardiff in the final 2008 and the day was amazing because we won the cup I'd waited such a long
15:33time
15:34for it added it to my FA Youth Cup medal from 1989 two years before but it wasn't until the
15:40following day
15:41and we did the the open top bus parade around Portsmouth and uh given Portsmouth position in in football
15:48rankings was quite low albeit premiership it was still quite a lowly ranked side we went around on
15:53the open top bus I anticipated going to the the town hall so as we're passing the odd person waving
15:59and cheering I thought well it's Portsmouth maybe maybe everyone didn't want to turn out anyway we go
16:05past the town hall and then we go on to South Sea Common and there were 200,000 people fantastic
16:12basically the population of Portsmouth turned up and uh for really for the first time in my in my
16:19footballing career I understood how much a football club meant to a to a city when basically everyone
16:26turns up and that has to be my my highlight of my my career yeah wonderful thank you very much
16:32David very

25:18Yeah, we, um...
25:20Well, I've got one five, which is taunt.
25:22No, there was one six that we could find.
25:24A tune.
25:25A tune.
25:26To become attuned to something.
25:28Very good.
25:29Ten points in it now.
25:3170 to Aidan's 60 as we turn to Susie and her wonderful origins of words.
25:38And today, Susie?
25:39Today, I'm going to talk about the beginnings of ink.
25:44Ink is something we, you know, we know even from printers, cartridges today,
25:49and it's just a daily utensil for us, really.
25:52But for the ancient Greeks, obviously, it was incredibly important,
25:56not just in communication, but also for cauterising wounds, believe it or not.
26:01It had a medical history.
26:03And that's because ink in those days meant something very different.
26:06They would burn the skin or flesh with a heated instrument or a caustic substance,
26:10much as you might find in medicine today,
26:12in order to stop bleeding or to prevent infection.
26:15And their word for cauterising was kortyrion, which was a branding iron.
26:20So far, so simple, really.
26:21But the Greeks not only sealed wounds with heat, but they used much the same process in art as well
26:26to hold fast the colours of their paintings.
26:30And they'd use wax colours that were then fixed with heat, or as they expressed it,
26:35on couston, which was burned in, goes back to that same word, a branding iron.
26:40The Romans took this on.
26:42They changed it a little bit to on couston.
26:44And it became the name for a kind of purple ink that the emperors used
26:48when they signed their official documents and then sealed those with hot wax.
26:53And then, as so often with English, more languages came into play
26:56and Old French, the French took it on.
26:59And on couston, which was there for the Romans, became onc,
27:03and eventually we adopted it as ink.
27:05So it went a very, very long way.
27:06But ink has a very, very valuable history, and as I say,
27:09not just in communication and in writing, but in medicine as well.
27:14Wonderful.
27:16Very good to see you.
27:21Perfect little essay then, as ever.
27:2570 plays 60.
