00:30Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown Studio.
00:33It's a Friday, it's January, and for many of us, our thoughts begin to turn to getting away, to having
00:41fun, vacations, travel.
00:43Well, if you're feeling adventurous, you like the water, why don't you head down to Excel and the London Boat
00:50Show.
00:51They're all there from dinghies to super yachts, from eight foot to huge to huge.
00:57There's surely something there for everybody who fancies setting sail. Ship ahoy!
01:03Some people, Rachel, crave a life on the ocean wave, and I'm not one of them. Do you fancy sailing?
01:09I would, actually, especially what you did over the summer with my friend's dad.
01:14Yes!
01:15You had my friend's dad as your captain, didn't you?
01:18Well, not my captain. I was on a big super yacht as a guest, and your pal's dad was the
01:25captain.
01:26What a good guy he was.
01:27Captain Jekylls. I'm jealous, I've never been out with them. I love looking at the big yachts in Portofino and
01:33Cannes.
01:34So, I was over the summer, I was just staring at them, and you were on them.
01:37Absolutely.
01:38Next time, I'll go in your suitcase.
01:40I'm staying on shore.
01:42Now, who have we got with us? We've got Andy Noden back with us again.
01:46Another big victory yesterday. Well done, although you lost the conundrum.
01:50But, um, hoping to finish off the week with a sixth win.
01:54Awful.
01:54Well, Godspeed to you, and, uh, you're joined by Basia Foster, a hospice worker, originally from Birmingham, now living in
02:02Leicester.
02:03And your favourite, uh, place in the whole world is Krakow, and you own an apartment in Krakow.
02:09How did this come about? Have you got Polish antecedents?
02:13I have. Both my parents are from Poland, and my mum's actually from Krakow.
02:17Yeah.
02:17So I've still got family there.
02:18It's a beautiful city, and you bought an apartment. How clever of you.
02:22Mm-hmm.
02:22Well, good luck to you both, to Basia and to Andy. Big round of applause for today's contestants.
02:32And in the corner, as ever, the wonderful Susie Dent, and joined for the last time, until we can persuade
02:37them to come back, which will not be too long, I trust, the wonderful John Culshaw, comedian and impressionist.
02:44It's been a gorgeous week. It always is, when I have the chance to spend a little time here.
02:49It's a pleasure to have you, and you've kept us enthralled. But now it's time for Andy to amaze us.

04:11Muriate comes from muriatic acid.
04:13It's a salt or ester of muriatic acid, which is another term for hydrochloric acid.
04:18And mokia just sounds great, I think.
04:22And in the corner?
04:24No, we were with those, actually.
04:25We were looking at muriates just then.
04:26All right.
04:27Well done.

05:47Vomitor.
05:49A vomitor, okay.
05:51That is there.
05:53That's absolutely fine.
05:55Derivative of vomit, obviously.
05:56And trefoil is fantastic.
05:57It's a small plant of the pea family.
06:00And it has yellow flowers and three lobes, just like clover.
06:04Very good.
06:04Trey being three, please.
06:06Now then, what have we got? John?
06:08There's another seven in there and...
06:11Overlit. Overlit.
06:13Seven, yes.
06:13You could be overlit by a bad photographer, for instance.
06:16That was it.
06:17You could be.
06:18Heaven for fun. That should have happened.
06:2014 points apiece. Andy, first numbers game.
06:23Can I have one large, please?
06:26You can. You're useful.
06:27Quick. One large and five little ones.

06:31Andy, and for the first time today, the numbers are 10, 4, 2, 3, 7, and 25.

08:21Because he's the mousiest.

10:03Very good.
10:05Excellent word.

12:21target 848 8 4 8
12:27the
12:30the
12:32the
12:36the
12:38the
12:40the
12:42the
12:42the
12:44the
12:44the
12:45the
12:55yes Basha 8 4 9 84 9 and it 848 come on
13:02um seven minus three seven minus three is four is four uh ten minus four is six yeah
13:10hundred plus six one hundred and six ah sounds about the eight perfect eight four eight
13:22very impressive 48 to uh 21 but now we turn to john now then john it's general election year
13:30it is 2015 the general election looming and i think last time the political characters were
13:40a little bit often described as being a bit gray and uninteresting uh you know we did have gordon
13:46brown with his vast array of hand gestures uh some in this direction and some by way of a contrast
13:51in this direction over here in this manner um but i think there's quite a nice little mix of
13:58characters now and it's shaping up rather nicely you know david cameron very posh with his repeated
14:02hand gesture as though he's having a very busy game of hungry hippos like that michael farage
14:08paint myself yellow i'll become a proper simpson waiter mine's a bottle of wine in fact forget
14:11the bottle just tie me down and water bottle me with it and of course the dead ringers writers
14:16gave nick clegg a very simple catchphrase hello i'm nick clegg sorry about that
14:24and of course you know to uh sort of bailers out uh of course uh we have the uh beautiful
14:29uh skilled
14:29uh buffoonery of uh boris johnson the only fellow outside the beano who says cripes and stone the crows
14:35and by golly gosh blah it's just before he goes off to have a shampoo with a water cannon blah
14:42but i think perhaps my favorite in terms of comedy
14:45is the sort of pleading sense that comes from ed milliband and look you know viewers of
14:53canada what i say to people when i go up and down the country and i talk to the hard
14:59-working people
15:00of great britain on their doorstep what they say to me when i'm on their doorstep when i'm going up
15:05and down the country talking to the hard-working people of great britain on the doorstep look what
15:12they say to me is who are you what are you doing on my voice so he sort of evokes
15:18a slight bit of
15:18sympathy but i think for comedy ed milliband might be the favorite i think yeah that's unusual you did
15:24it beautifully beautifully big round of applause always spot on is our john culture now then

24:35Ronquil.
24:37Ronquil.
24:38Goodness.
24:39It's not a plant this time, because Andy's amazing at his plants,
24:42but he's good at fish as well.
24:43This is a slender, bottom-dwelling fish.
24:45It lives in cold coastal waters of the North Pacific.
24:49Very good.
24:55Extraordinary.
24:56Now then, John.
24:58Well, in the face of all these brilliant words, you know, we've got a six,
25:02and maybe we need it.
25:03Some liquor.
25:04Liquor.
25:0786th place, 35.
25:08But now we revert to Susie and her wonderful origins of words.
25:14Now then, Susie.
25:16Well, just a little bit of history to bless you,
25:20which people will say when you sneeze, if you're lucky.
25:23Lots of stories behind this expression, but there is a common theme that underpins all of them,
25:28and that was the belief in the Middle Ages that when you sneezed,
25:33you basically expelled your soul from your body.
25:37And in doing so, you would make room for an evil spirit, or even worse, the devil himself.
25:43And the only way of bringing the soul back to the person who had sneezed was by blessing them,
25:49and thus bestowing grace upon them, and they would regain their soul.
25:54And as you might expect, it did become a daily expression during the Great Plague of London in 1665,
26:01when sneezing obviously was a symptom of the Black Death,
26:04in which case the blessing seemed all the more appropriate.
26:08So that was bless you, but the Black Death is also often said to be behind the nursery rhyme,
26:12ring-a-ring-a-roses, pocket full of poses, a tissue, a tissue we all fall down.
26:16And many people believe that the nosegays that were carried to escape the stench of death,
26:23they were the poses, and that sneezing obviously was a symptom,
26:25as well as red sores around the mouth, and that was the ring of roses.
26:30So it was all said to be the symptoms of the plague.
26:33And I mentioned the word nosegay, and we talked about this on count number four.
26:36It meant a nose ornament, the gays was ornament.
26:38And again, it was intended to mask the smell of unsavoury things,
26:41particularly in the days of poor sanitation.
26:44But they were also named, when I was researching these, in Victorian times,
26:47as tussie-mussies, believe it or not.
26:49And that is a word that comes from the French,
26:51and it might be related to tousse, meaning to cough,
26:54which brings us right back again to the Great Plague.
26:56Well, well, well. How extraordinary.
27:04Pepys wrote a wonderful account of the plague.
27:07It came from Holland.
27:09It came from Holland, yeah.
27:11And it came in on the ships coming in from Holland.
27:13And they sort of saw it coming.
27:16And he recounted the number of deaths per day and how it grew and grew.
27:22It was extraordinary.
27:23Extraordinary.
27:25Very frightening.
