00:34It was 40 years ago today that history was made and it wouldn't be the only time for the woman

00:40It was on this day back in 1975 that the late Margaret Hilda Thatcher became the first female leader of

25:10Well, today I'm going to talk about hairiness behind words in English.
25:15Because I was asked recently for the origin of the word hairy.
25:18As if you say, well, that's a bit hairy, that's a bit dicey.
25:21Where does that come from?
25:23Talk about hair bend.
25:24It's all related.
25:25And to answer that, I need to go right back to the Romans.
25:28And their word for hair that stands on end in fear, anxiety, stress, or the cold.
25:35And that word was horridus, which is behind hericholation.
25:39That's the technical word for hair standing up on end.
25:41And that, of course, gave us horrid.
25:43It was the horror movie, horrific, and all such words.
25:47It's from the idea of a bodily response to something.
25:49That's the root of our word hairy, because it means something that is so scary that it
25:54will literally make your hair stand up on end.
25:56And you only have to think of those cartoon cats with their fur sticking right up to get
26:01the meaning.
26:02Hair raising is a little bit more obvious, sort of transparent form or reference to that.
26:07But there are so many other words in English that have hair behind them in some way or
26:11other.
26:12Dishevel, to be disheveled meant to have your hair disarranged, in complete disarray at the
26:17beginning, it comes from the French chevel, meaning your hair.
26:20Comet, a comet is a long-haired star.
26:23It comes from the Greek word, the comet is meant long hair, because it's such a long tail.
26:29And smarmy, I love this, to smarm was to rub your hair into scented, in pomade, which
26:33is the word we often get on Countdown, to make it all greasy.
26:36So if somebody is smarmy today, we're looking back to that idea of rubbing ointment on.
26:41But I'm going to leave with a most fantastic insult, the beginning is an insult for a bald-headed
26:45man, back in probably the 17th century, and that was to call him a pill garlic, because
26:51a bald man, apparently, a bald-headed man, looks a little bit like a peeled piece of
