00:01In handing down her sentencing today, Justice Natalie Adams sentenced Daniel
00:07Billings to 28 years in prison with a non-parole period of 20 years. That has
00:14been backdated to April 19, 2024. Justice Natalie Adams told the court that
00:20there is no amount of sentencing that can bring Molly Tysos back. All she can do
00:25in her sentencing is acknowledge the grief that this murder has caused her
00:30family. On the 21st of April 2024 at 11.27pm, Daniel Billings broke into Molly
00:38Tysos' home through her bedroom window, stabbed her multiple times, leaving her
00:44with 15 wounds and left the premises 59 seconds later. Justice Adams told the
00:50court Mr. Billings was aware of Molly's fears that he would break through her
00:54window and get to her before police could get there. Mr. Billings ultimately
00:58chose to carry out the fatal assault by doing exactly what he threatened to do.
01:03It must have been absolutely terrifying for Miss Tysos to die knowing her worst
01:08fears were being realised. Molly Tysos' family and friends were in court today
01:13to hear this sentencing. There was more than three dozen people as the sentence
01:19was read out. There were tears. There was disappointment expressed. The local member
01:24for Orange, Phil Donato, he is a former police prosecutor. He also criticised the
01:31sentencing handed down by Justice Adams. He said that Daniel Billings deserved a life
01:37sentence due to the nature of the crime. The fact he was out on bail at the time of the
01:43murder for offences alleged to have been committed against Molly Tysos, including
01:48sexual assault, which Billings denied. He says that a life sentence was the only
01:54fitting sentence for Daniel Billings.
01:56They'll probably be, you know, disappointed, I'd say. They don't think, probably not,
02:01that it's not long enough. That, you know, what's the point of having life in terms of
02:05imprisonment if they're not imposed by the courts?
02:07Molly Tysos' murder sparked a national conversation about domestic violence in New South Wales that
02:14also led to bail reforms, including it being mandatory for people granted bail for serious
02:20domestic violence offences to wear electronic monitoring devices. It also changed rules around
02:27the requirement for people accused of serious domestic violence offences to show cause as to
02:32why they should be granted bail. After all of this ordeal and this case, which has been going on for
02:39a long time since Molly was murdered in April 2024, Daniel Billings has ultimately been sentenced
02:45to 28 years in prison with a non-parole period of 20 years backdated to April 2024, meaning he will
02:53be
02:53eligible for parole by 2044.
