A man has been sentenced to 26 years in jail after being found guilty of murdering his estranged wife in March last year. A Melbourne court heard Jessie James Tumaliuan repeatedly assaulted and abused his former partner over the course of years before killing her.

00:01Today, Justice Mandy Fox said the victim in this case, Serena Tomalian, had done everything
00:07she could to keep herself and her four children safe.
00:11And despite multiple intervention orders, her violent husband, Jesse James Tomalian,
00:17wasn't deterred.
00:18The court heard that over an eight-year span, he committed numerous acts of domestic violence
00:24and even went to jail.
00:26But despite those punishments, he kept re-offending.
00:30Jesse James Tomalian committed the ultimate act of violence last March when he murdered
00:36his wife in her own home.
00:38The court heard that after she'd completed the school drop-off, he broke into the house.
00:43There was an argument between the couple before he then armed himself with kitchen knives and
00:48chased her into the backyard.
00:50The court heard some of this horrifying attack was captured on CCTV and that Serena Tomalian
00:57was stabbed eight times.
00:59In the aftermath, the killer called triple zero but blamed his actions on the victim.
01:06The court heard he was motivated by financial greed, grievances with the legal system and
01:12was jealous of the fact that his estranged wife was getting on with her life without him.
01:17Justice Mandy Fox said the killer's actions had robbed four children of a loving mother
01:22and shattered a family.
01:24Killer Jesse James Tomalian showed no emotion in today's sentencing hearing, where he was
01:30sentenced to 26 years jail.
01:33He will be deported to his home country of the Philippines upon his release.
