00:08I'm good, Joe. How you doing, buddy?
00:11I'm having a blast with all this stuff.
00:14And it's just great to hear people talking about the Canes football team.
00:18And especially starting with what a great start to the passing game.
00:24Mensa and Malachi, just unbelievable show.
00:28But it was really the whole passing game.
00:31I thought the pass protection was great.
00:32You kind of start with that.
00:34I just wonder what your take was on some of the other areas.
00:38Because everybody was looking for that perfect game.
00:40And, you know, pass coverage was not what it needs to be.
00:44Run blocking, pass rush, those things.
00:46But I think they can all be cleaned up with what they have.
00:49But what was your read on the first game as far as those areas go?
00:53Well, you know, Joe, when you get back and you start digesting it and you watch it,
00:57you say, really?
00:58Okay.
00:59We go out on the road as far away as you can get.
01:03And you come back with a 45-6 win.
01:05Right.
01:06I mean, how bad can it be?
01:07Your defense doesn't give up any touchdown.
01:10Any touchdown, that's right.
01:11You're great in the red zone.
01:13You find a quarterback that exceeded everybody's expectations as far as game one goes.
01:20Nobody in the world, me included, could have thought that he would have gone 27-30 in five
01:25touchdowns and no interceptions.
01:27And that's in two and a half quarters.
01:30And I think that you look at the game in its entirety and you go, this team has started
01:36at a different level.
01:38I mean, let's face it, last year against Notre Dame was a huge win and a tough battle, but
01:45Miami has not lost anything.
01:46Now, there's a lot of new faces and we lost, Miami lost a ton of superstars.
01:51I mean, two first-round picks on the D-line, a first-round pick on the O-line.
01:55And it's going to take a minute to get people acclimated to fill in at those spots and for
01:59us as spectators to adapt to what this new football team is going to look like.
02:04But I think overall, you go on the road and you come away with a victory like that, and
02:09let's face it, Stanford, well-coached football team, smart kids, big, powerful on the offensive
02:15line, powerful defensive line, found out they couldn't run as well in the secondary as they
02:19needed to.
02:20But I mean, at the end of the day, this was not an easy task when you sit and think
02:26about
02:26going out there and getting it done.
02:28I give Miami a very high grade for the opening game.
02:31Let me ask you, so tonight you're playing this Florida team, FAMU, and I think it's
02:38a great time to get extra work.
02:39I don't mind saying it, and I know Mario's not talking about that, and he's talking about
02:43let's get out there and you want everybody to play hard.
02:46But boy, this is a good night if things go the way you want, where you get all those
02:52guys that played in that fourth quarter more playing time, get them some more work, because
02:57they could be very important down the road, especially a handful of those young guys like
03:02Dunnegan and Wingo and Mallory and Congdon and Cantwell.
03:06I'd love to see those guys get more playing time tonight.
03:10I believe that's what's going to happen.
03:12I mean, Miami, I think your starters are going to go out and for sure, I mean, my belief is
03:17it's going to play the first half.
03:19I mean, you're going to have to start spelling guys, you know, in the second quarter, no matter
03:23what the score is, because you've got to get also in game condition.
03:25Miami's only had the one game under their belt, and you want your guys to get used to
03:30what it is tempo-wise and how to play the game itself, because there are a lot of young
03:33guys that haven't started.
03:35So I think the first half is going to be a continuation of what you saw at Stanford with
03:40the starters, and then the second half, maybe the first, usually normally what happens,
03:44Joe, as you know this, the first series of the second half on both sides of the ball
03:48goes out again, and then they start making some changes.
03:51So that's, I mean, that's the blueprint for these games.
03:55If, if they go a planning, according to plan, you know, then I don't see why it shouldn't.
04:02Let me ask you this question.
04:03It was a good question.
04:04What, what he threw out a, threw a good one out here about Malachi.
04:07Yep.
04:08He's so important.
04:09He's so good.
04:10Uh, app, you, you can't cover him at any level, including the NFL.
04:14If he's in a slot, he is, he's that good one-on-one giving him a two-way go.
04:19So he hits top speed at like three steps, like I've never seen, which makes him one
04:25of the many where he never drops a ball either, but he seems to always be open.
04:29How much, you know how important, and I know he wants to play.
04:32I mean, that guy, he, he can't get enough.
04:34I get it, man.
04:35That guy's never full from, from eating birthday cake.
04:38He just keeps eating it, man.
04:39That guy, whatever you give him, he's taken.
04:42Okay.
04:42So, uh, how much do you play a guy like that?
04:46And how do you feel about him, uh, on punt returns as the games get big?
04:52Not right now, but when the games get real big, he's so good at it.
04:56He's good at that too.
04:58How do you treat it?
05:00If he's, if he's the best at the position and he can play, he's playing.
05:05Again, I mean, I, I, I don't like getting into that mentality of saving.
05:10I really don't.
05:11I mean, Malachi Tony is a 17 year old or 16 year old, whatever he was last year.
05:16He did everything, right?
05:17I mean, what was he?
05:17I mean, he, he, he just got his driver's license.
05:19No, no, no.
05:20He turned, uh, he turned 18 at his birthdays next week.
05:23So he'll be 19, right?
05:25Yeah.
05:25Now I'm confused.
05:26Yeah.
05:26He'll be 19.
05:27He's still going to be a teenager.
05:29Yeah.
05:30So I, I, I, first of all, he prepares himself.
05:34Since the day he hit campus to take on those jobs.
05:38He prepares himself to return punts, prepares himself to kicks.
05:43He prepares himself to play quarterback.
05:45He prepares himself to play receiver.
05:47He put that, he, that is his regimen.
05:49His regimen is I do not want to come off the field and don't take me off the field.
05:53Right.
05:54And I, I got to respect it.
05:55I mean, in reality, you, I don't know that you pick and choose that.
05:59If you, if you sit a guy, if you sit a guy who's a punt returner for a game,
06:04do you lose rhythm the next week?
06:06I mean, how did, how does that work for those guys?
06:10No, me, me neither.
06:12But I don't think that guy ever loses the edge.
06:14I think you literally, he's one of those guys, like you said, he wants to play so much.
06:19Somebody's got to be a grownup in a room though, to say, Hey, you got to sit with me a
06:23little
06:23bit.
06:23Watch, let's watch together.
06:25Put a hat on.
06:26You look good in that hat over there.
06:27Hey, I wanted to ask you about what I wanted to ask you about one guy that everybody's
06:32raving about.
06:33You know more about him than I do.
06:34Donegan at the safety slash corner.
06:38He is just screaming.
06:39You can't keep me out of the lineup.
06:41You can't keep me out.
06:42I'm going to have to play.
06:44I'm, I'm special.
06:45Now guys are saying he's one of the fastest guys on the team.
06:48Yeah.
06:48Buckle up.
06:49I mean, he's, he's got everything.
06:52He really does.
06:53And again, you know, he's, he's on the clock in a sense of just how much can he absorb?
06:58How much of the defense does he, does he know what's he lacking academically?
07:03There's nothing he's lacking physically.
07:05And to this last week in the second half, or really he got in in the whole year in the
07:09whole game, but last week in the second half, he picked up a lot of plays.
07:13And then tonight it's going to help him.
07:16He's a guy tonight that you want to get as many reps as you can get because come wake
07:20forest, you're going to need to, you're going to need them.
07:22You're going to need more reps and then come against Clemson.
07:24So you got to get these guys acclimated to what the pace is of college football and what
07:29a, what game pace is.
07:30He's been great at practice and you know, they don't let it up at practice.
07:34So, but I think he's going to be something special and you know, his size Joe with the
07:38speed combination and he is nothing but a downhill guy when it comes to the run game.
07:43He does not shy away at all.
07:45Yeah, man.
07:45He is.
07:46He's been, Hey, by the way, I thought a light foot got off to a real nice start.
07:50Huh?
07:51He looked like a, for all questions about, can he play against the run?
07:55Has his probably his best game since he's been a cane getting a full time to play.
07:59I agree with you.
08:01And nobody again, like the, here's one of the guys that jumped to jump out at you.
08:04Nobody would have guessed or predicted or, or thought he would be the leading tackler with
08:10nine tackles last week.
08:11And, and some of that stuff was, I mean, he, he played a power game against a big, strong
08:16offensive line and he won in the run game and we, we all know what he can do pass rush
08:21wise.
08:21So I think he was one of the pleasant surprises in a category of the run game that people didn't
08:26know how good he was.
08:27Hey, um, we were talking to, uh, and, uh, and I'm looking ahead a little bit, uh, about
08:32the quarterback situation.
08:34Five-star quarterback business is expensive.
08:36As you know, we got one coming.
08:38Uh, we got, we got to find out what we have with the backup quarterbacks a little bit more
08:42this year.
08:42Don't you think?
08:43Um, and hopefully we continue to get a lot of work to our other quarterbacks.
08:47I don't think coach Cristobal looks at that position really any different than anybody
08:52else.
08:52And that's why you saw Luke nickel get into the ball game last week.
08:56And I would hope that, you know, nickel and Coleman or whoever the third guy is going to
09:00be.
09:01I hope all, I hope all three of them play Saturday.
09:03I want to see him in game and game time.
09:05And Luke nickel specifically, if he's, if he's two right now, you've got to get him as much
09:10playing time as you can.
09:11So you can make yourself, uh, feel comfortable going into the 20, 27 season if he's, if he's
09:18scheduled to be the starter.
09:19Hey, um, you know, one offense alignment always gets overlooked and we have a crush on the
09:24young guys and we like, we got a pair of six, eight, 330 pound guys that, you know, they
09:28looked apart.
09:29There's no question someday, but this guy Buchanan is really good.
09:35And we never really talk about him, right?
09:38He's kind of like, yeah, yeah, we can play him too.
09:40And he grades out really well, doesn't he?
09:43He's not a me too guy, Joe, right?
09:45He, he, he, he's legit.
09:47I think that he's, you gotta remember he's only sophomore, only played about 50 or 60 reps
09:52last year.
09:53And basically he played in that ball game against Stanford, the same amount of reps he played
09:59the entire season last year.
10:01Wow.
10:01And I think he's, I think he's a guy that's underrated in the sense of how powerful he is.
10:06And he's, he, he could probably roll in the center if he had to, he's a guy that's, that
10:11has, does a real good job technique wise.
10:14And he's, they're just getting into a groove and the, as good as he looked last week, he's
10:20going to look better next week, this week and the following week and the following week.
10:23And so will that entire unit will get better every single week.
10:27We can't wait, man.
10:28Game two tonight is going to be fun.
10:31I'm not big on these Thursday night games, but, but dammit, let's, let's get them going.
