Potentially record-breaking heat is hanging on across Texas as we approach mid-September.
Transcript
00:00So here we are Thursday. We've got some more heat, showers, and thunderstorms out there.
00:04We're going to be dealing with a widespread area of significant heat continuing,
00:09and some thunderstorms will be out there in some spots kind of on the fringes of the map.
00:13But overall, as we take a look at the areas that will be challenging record highs on Thursday,
00:18it's kind of a diversified list here.
00:21Some of these areas, like Greenwood, Mississippi, to the east, 97, the record high, 96, on September 10th.
00:28And we expect to break that record. We've been there five times on September 10th in history.
00:34Other areas, a little shy of records, but we're not far off.
00:36The record high in Austin, Texas, 101. We've been there three times on September 10th.
00:40We'll be around 99. Awfully hot out there.
00:42Needles, California, there's a hot spot, 112.
00:44You know you're in a hot spot if 112 is not hot enough to get to the record high there.
00:50In 1990, we hit 113 degrees.
00:53So you'll notice most areas are going to stay dry here with very few showers and storms.
00:58It's kind of the fringes of the heat dome where we see storms.
01:01We get into Thursday afternoon and evening, and they do become a bit more widespread.
01:05Dallas, up into areas around Idabel, Oklahoma, and west into Lubbock and Amarillo.
01:10Pretty good chance for some at least scattered thunderstorms somewhere in the neighborhood.
01:14May not be in your backyard, but it's going to be nearby if it doesn't happen to hit your place.
01:18But then the showers and storms are going to be less likely.
01:21Shreveport, Texarkana, and east, with just a little more sinking air there.
01:25Storms will be spotty, very isolated in those areas.
01:28In the Friday, we're going to do it again.
01:30The best chance for storms will be a little farther east this time, with a little more
01:33drying north and west into Oklahoma City, Amarillo, and Lubbock.
01:37But it's going to remain steamy out there.
01:39And Saturday, we do have college football returning to Austin, Texas.
01:44We'll look at that in just a moment.
01:46So Friday, steamy.
01:47You can see that our kind of graphical depiction of the forecast, it does carry most of the storms
01:53a little farther east Friday compared to Thursday.
01:55But hot weather out there.
01:57There'll be a slight breeze in the afternoon.
01:59Here we are looking at true record highs for the 11th of September.
02:03September 11th, and again, the 25th anniversary of 9-11.
02:07106 in Laredo, 104 in McAllen, Texas.
02:11Almost to a record in Borger, but we should hit a record high there in Roswell.
02:15And we'll probably tie the record in Albuquerque.
02:17So if you're going to be doing any outdoor events or activities that commemorate, again,
02:23and look back on reflecting on 9-11.
02:25If they're outdoors in the South Central, it's going to be a very, very hot time on Friday.
02:29Saturday, still a lot of heat here as the primary story.
02:33And the fringes of the area have showers and storms around.
02:35And here's that college football forecast.
02:37You know, early in the season, you get a lot of really lopsided battles.
02:40This is a battle of two top-five ranked teams.
02:43Ohio State against Texas in Austin.
02:45Sweltering heat.
02:46It is an evening game, 630 Central.
02:49But we're still going to retain a lot of the heat into the early part of that game.
02:53All right, be careful if you're tailgating.
