00:00hey boomer hey good morning guys how's it going well before we get to ball yes congratulations
00:07on your forthcoming induction into the radio hall of fame i believe joining some of the greats from
00:14your generation like casey casem uh paul harvey and wolfman jack so yeah congratulations boomer
00:22uh thanks greg i appreciate that you know listen uh this started with weei way back when in 2002
00:28well before i even started here at wfan you know i was with dennison callahan for a lot of years
00:33yes
00:33and then went to bz for a couple years when the company went through some changes and then came
00:38back to your show and that's all a part of it you know i i had done westwood one for
00:4419 years on
00:45monday night football uh did wgn up in chicago worked for wlw in cincinnati so in wfan is i guess
00:53my
00:54crowning achievement i guess so yeah i never thought it was ever going to happen and here we
00:58are pretty impressive and just to be clear the induction came after you started working with me
01:03yes i get it you know it's interesting that you uh it is called the greg hill show up there
01:08i know
01:09because we have the craig carton show down here and friends uh your friends actually help you
01:14more than his friends so i know jermaine and courtney are a big part of your success well
01:19i mean most of them are here unfortunately jermaine did not he missed the group tech so he's not here
01:25you may join us mid-interview boomer i don't know you know by the way is is you've talked to
01:30him about
01:30glp or no uh oh he's on it he looks fantastic i mean i don't know yeah oh yeah he's
01:36on the juice
01:36he's on it he does one meal a day he says that's it wow so so he he weighed probably
01:43about 280 at one
01:44point maybe 290 yeah maybe give or take what's he down to now 268 no no he said he's lost
01:51like 45
01:52yeah do you believe him courtney yes he looks he looks trim in person let me tell you really yeah
01:58yeah well listen how big does does he have like al sharpton head
02:03his head is pretty he's like a bobblehead i it's it's weird when you see i was saying about our
02:08former
02:08mayor marty walsh his head looks very big but he's lost a ton of weight now greg's anti glp oh
02:14i'm
02:14anti glp yeah i do it the natural right um so listen big news this morning is that christian
02:20gonzalez has signed his deal and uh our great national nightmare is over boomer yeah well four
02:26years 135 million 33 million a year oh my god he made more than what he's gonna make more than
02:32one
02:32year than i made in 14 years in my nfl career i i'm happy for him i'm happy for the
02:37players you know
02:38this is what we fought for fought for back in 1987 he really is a a terrific player and uh
02:44uh
02:45fortunately or unfortunately tomorrow night he's going against jackson smith and jigbo one of the
02:50best wide receivers in the nfl so both got paid this off season both are going to go up against
02:55each
02:55other and you know that's one one of the things that you really want to watch in this game uh
03:00come
03:00tomorrow night so i was happy for the kid he certainly has has paid his dues he's certainly a kid
03:05that
03:06has lived up to every expectation he's not even kidding anymore he's a young man but uh he's one
03:11of the bright spots for the new england defense for sure are you surprised it took this long i mean
03:15it's a million bucks over when it comes to the guarantee on witherspoon's deal what were they
03:20waiting for make it figuring out witherspoon's deal and wanting to make more money you know that's
03:25the idea in the nfl a lot of people don't realize you know tom brady gets lauded for all those
03:30years
03:30taking less money i don't know if he was doing deals with robert uh crap off the side i'm not
03:35really sure about that um you know kind of like uh what's going on with kawaii leonard you never know
03:40right yeah uh but i will say that you know your your object the object your job as a player
03:47is to
03:48one-up the next player so the next player that comes after you one-ups you that's the idea behind
03:52the union and behind you know the way these contracts are written so i'm not surprised and i'm happy for
03:59him
03:59and certainly happy for the new england patriots that they got this done because the last thing
04:03you want is to have one of your captains one of your best players unhappy before the season start
04:08christian doesn't come off that way he's kind of a quiet keeps to himself type of player so i i
04:14think
04:14that if there were a player that we're going to get this kind of money it's going to be him
04:18for sure
04:18boomer what is the crafts being able to get this deal done tell you down the road about the
04:23negotiations with drake may well i mean drake may if well i'm sorry so he's had really
04:29one great year and he was lucky to have josh mcdaniels as i told you last year at this time
04:34that he was going to have the biggest increase or the biggest uh coming out party and he certainly
04:39did um you know he's still got another year or so uh to get his extension he needs to have
04:44a good
04:45year this year this game look they went out and got him two really good wide receivers maybe a great
04:50one in aj brown hopefully he's happy and he's productive but uh the offense for the patriots should
04:55be better throwing the ball this year than it was last year and that means you know the maturity of
05:01drake may is going to be a big part of that and to get started on the road at lumens
05:04field out in
05:05seattle that is not easy so if he could put together you know quality start after quality start you know
05:12his next contract will be probably starting with a six you know per year so 60 million per year would
05:18probably be the minimum if he plays like he did last year boomer what where do you stand on the
05:24patriots it feels like nationally there has been this desire to sort of say it was a the super bowl
05:30appearance was a reaction to a soft schedule where other quarterbacks got hurt and the patriots kind
05:35of got lucky this year they're going to fall back down to earth what what do you expect from this
05:39patriots team entering uh this uh variable second season yeah and i can understand why i mean their
05:45schedule is so much harder this year so most of us look at it and say okay who's got the
05:50easy
05:50schedule this year that's the detroit lions they going into this season going off of last year they
05:55come in with the the easiest strength of schedule kind of like the patriots did last year i think
06:00they ended up either second or third but there is something to be said about that if you come in
06:04last
06:04place in your your your division you're going to end up with some easier games than you normally would
06:09have but i will say no game is really that easy i mean you still have to go out and
06:13you got to perform
06:14you know i see the patriots as a 10 to 11 win team this year i don't see them as
06:19a 14 win team
06:20um they still are thin along you know certain areas of their team their offensive and defensive line
06:26although they shored up that offensive line a little bit here before the season started i think
06:31will campbell is under the microscope he's got to have a much better season uh you know his first part
06:37of the season last year as you guys know he was really good then he gets hurt and then he
06:40comes back
06:41and he just got torched uh in the playoffs and we all saw it so and he saw it too
06:46and by the way
06:47give him credit because he opened up about that and he talked about how he has to perform much better
06:52and i would expect that that would be the case you know these two teams that are playing on wednesday
06:57night are almost identical from where they were last year there are a few new players here and there but
07:02the bulk of the teams are the same the big difference for me is going to be the offensive coordinator
07:08for
07:08seattle so more clint kubiak you know they go out and they hire brian flory now brian flory was not
07:15with seattle last year he's a guy that's came from another building in the building he came from san
07:19francisco so he runs a very similar type of offense but calling plays and uh designing plays and and
07:29connecting with your team you know clint kubiak had all of that last year i i'm assuming that brian
07:34flory's going to have that with his team but you know this is his first foray into play calling so
07:39that is a big big question mark for the seattle seahawks going into more nice game well sticking
07:44with oc's the relationship with drake and josh mcdaniels you brought it up but going into year
07:49two what does that that stability do for for a quarterback especially a young one it's awesome
07:54it's it's it's exactly what you want you know when they drafted drake it was not the greatest
08:00situation it's kind of like when they drafted caleb williams in chicago it wasn't the greatest
08:03situation and then all of a sudden the team makes a change and they go out and they get the
08:07people
08:08that they're familiar with or people that they know are going to be good and have positive effects
08:13on the quarterback so the relationship last year between uh josh mcdaniels and of course drake may
08:19it grew as the season went on and that's one of the reasons why you know drake actually started
08:24to flourish as a starting quarterback so take it from somebody who half his career was in with an
08:29offensive coordinator that i trusted i respected and i believed in and the other half of my career
08:34i was like scratching my head going is this guy dope or what so you know that's the kind of
08:39relationship you want you know the quarterback's got to feel like when he gets to the building
08:43and he walks in there with the coach and he sits down with that coach that that coach is going
08:48to give
08:48him all the answers to the test and i think that's what josh has done both for brady and uh
08:54for drake
08:55that's a good sign for the patriots boomer are the international games a good thing for the nfl
09:00i mean kyle shanahan can't figure out what day it is yeah i couldn't either i would hate it myself
09:05i understand why they're doing it uh you know europe's a little bit easier to get to than
09:10melbourne australia and by the way the really interesting thing about this
09:15is obviously i think you guys know about you know the sports science uh of this how the patriots
09:21i mean the patriots the 49ers are going one way about it they left last week and then the rams
09:25are going another way about it and they're going to get there 24 hours before game time you know
09:30the rams better hope there's no staff snafu with the visas and the passports because australia's got
09:34one of the toughest you know passport control systems in the in the world and if there's one hiccup
09:40on that end there could be players that could be missing from this game i i hope that's not the
09:45case
09:45but the other thing about that is what happens in week two so the giants have to play the rams
09:51in
09:51week two i'm not sure who the 49ers are playing but it's going to be really interesting to see how
09:56these teams come back and how they perform the first couple of weeks after the game in melbourne
10:02question of the week for boomer is brought to you by mcfarland energy where are you on what happened
10:08in the michigan game uh uh western michigan got screwed i i i didn't realize that there was a
10:15fogazi clock somewhere that they were looking at and you know this whole thing about a guy being
10:21out of bounds and a ball hitting his hand so you're telling me now that we have to coach players
10:26not to touch the ball if they're out of bounds is that so in other words if that player doesn't
10:31touch
10:32the ball the clock doesn't i guess the clock goes all the way and expires i i don't know i
10:38i thought
10:38western michigan got screwed in real time i still think it today and i i have no idea how the
10:44big 10
10:44comes out with a statement and tries to explain this and then they try to be as transparent as
10:49they possibly can but anybody who's ever played feels like western michigan got screwed boober how
10:55did we get here though where instant replay was initially created to correct obvious wrongs now it
11:01feels like it's wrong incorrect actual rights like what what did anybody watching that game think for a
11:07second that they needed to review whether the game actually ended you know you know how many times
11:13we have spoken about screw-ups of this nature and then we were talking about having replays for
11:18replay you know we've been talking about that for years i um i i didn't know that the clocks were
11:25not
11:26synced up i mean we're all to understand as a as we're watching the game we're there with everybody
11:32we're watching this thing tick to zero and then all of a sudden we hear the referee saying play is
11:37under
11:37further review i mean it was a rob job i don't care what anybody says to me it's it look
11:43i guess
11:43you could say it's all about the money it's all about the big 10 it's all about michigan being highly
11:47ranked and you know keeping them undefeated uh you could look at it 50 different ways but i think this
11:54was about as bad a screw job as i've ever seen i i've never seen anything quite like it and
12:01the fact
12:01that we're supposed to have these clocks all synced up and that there's some fugazi clock somewhere that
12:06we don't even know about i mean why even put the clock on the screen then boomer everything going
12:10on at unc right now all that scandal do you think that's going to have an impact on bill belichick
12:15his legacy moving forward no you know whatever you know mike lombardi got himself into or i mean that's
12:24really unfortunate that bill trusts the guy that you know he feels like he's going to be able to work
12:28for him and then this happens and um you know i i don't think it tarnishes bill's legacy as a
12:35football coach i still think he's the greatest nfl football coach of all time um but maybe these
12:42the types of decisions like this around personnel like that you know one of the reasons why maybe
12:47you know arthur blank didn't hire him in the first place yes yes all right uh before we go get
12:53you
12:53on record as we always do uh give me the two teams that are playing in the super bowl and
12:58in
12:58oh yeah you're gonna hate me um you know i did do i did this for fandle too i don't
13:02know if they're a
13:03big sponsor of yours but they asked me like i'm like here we are we got we got 17 games
13:07to go 18
13:08weeks to get them all played in uh you know i picked the lions out of the nfc just simply
13:13because
13:13of the schedule strength we were talking about earlier and i'm going to think that it's going to
13:18be josh allen this year okay all right well we'll see i'm trying to be honest but you know who
13:23knows
13:24we'll never talk to you again that was good i have to say you know without jermaine this thing
13:31wasn't really smooth it really did it was easy all right boomer we'll talk to you again next week
13:36thank you all right guys look forward to it have a great week that is boomer esiason you hear him
13:42on this show every monday during the nfl season
