00:03black holes suck in anything and everything that comes near them even light cannot escape after
00:08crossing one of their event horizons however black holes also release astrophysical jets or
00:13massive outflows of ionized matter now astronomers say they have observed the result of one of these
00:18jets ejecting out into space and it's created a cosmic mega structure the largest ever seen
00:24this is a simulation of what that event and the resulting structure look like and it has now
00:29been named porphyrian after the greek king of giants experts say it spans some seven mega parsecs
00:34across space-time or the equivalent of 23 million light years across that means the supermassive
00:40black hole that created it is extremely small by comparison for reference if porphyrian was shrunk
00:46down to the size of earth the supermassive black hole would only measure 0.2 millimeters meaning
00:51it's the equivalent of a skin mite producing an effect the size of our planet astrophysical
00:56jets are created when material entering a black hole gets accelerated along its magnetic field lines
01:01towards the poles this results in powerful jets of plasma being jettisoned into the cosmos at nearly the
