00:03black holes might be difficult to detect since we can't directly see them but we're getting
00:07better at it and recently astronomers were able to capture this image where every little
00:12white dot in this photo is a black hole pretty cool but this is just a small portion of the
00:16sky
00:17and after crunching some numbers scientists say they have a pretty good estimate of just
00:21how many black holes there are in the universe according to researchers from the international
00:25school of advanced studies in italy there are likely 40 quintillion or this many black holes
00:30in the universe they say this is the most exhaustive ab initio or from the beginning
00:35computational approaches to black hole estimations ever done according to science alert the
00:40researchers use data from black holes that form from single or binary stars and those that were
00:44the outcome of black hole mergers this data helped them to come up with the birth rate of stellar mass
00:49black holes or those that are between 5 and 160 times the mass of our own sun and when compared
00:54to observational data we have on black holes specifically their gravitational wave data
00:59it checks out so while we still don't know a whole lot about these dark cosmic objects
01:03at least we're now getting a better idea of just how pervasive they are
