00:03black holes are one of our universe's greatest mysteries but scientists may be one step closer
00:09to understanding them back in 2022 researchers developed a black hole analog in a laboratory
00:14simulating an event horizon by lining up atoms in a single line then the simulated black hole
00:20did something unexpected it started glowing experts say this was an example of hawking
00:24radiation or light particles created with a black hole breaking space-time but what does
00:29that mean for our understanding of black holes well one of the biggest mysteries surrounding them
00:33is our inability to define them within the general theory of relativity and quantum mechanics that is
00:38to say the math doesn't exactly add up and attempting to observe a black hole is difficult since they're
00:43so far away and nothing not even light can escape a black hole's event horizon however these laboratory
00:48simulations let scientists actually observe what's going on and the black hole globe produced in these
00:53laboratory experiments matched what was expected in a real one with the researchers noting that hawking
00:58radiation could account for the problem we have with black holes essentially breaking the laws of
01:03physics as we know them
