Hungary’s territory changed dramatically over the centuries, and its story begins far from Central Europe. The Magyars started as a Uralic tribe in Siberia, migrated across the Eurasian steppe, and eventually settled in the Pannonian Basin, where the Kingdom of Hungary took shape after Stephen I was crowned king in 1000.

From there, the map kept shifting. The Ottoman conquest in 1526 split Hungary into Ottoman Hungary, Transylvania, and Royal Hungary under Habsburg rule. Later, the Ottomans were driven out, Austria and Hungary formed Austria-Hungary, and the kingdom regained a vast territory before World War I changed everything again.

After Austria-Hungary collapsed, Hungary lost two-thirds of its land under the Treaty of Trianon, leaving many Hungarians outside the country. During World War II, Hungary briefly regained much of its former territory, but the postwar borders restored the modern outline seen today.

Perfect for viewers searching for Hungary history, historical map changes, Kingdom of Hungary, Treaty of Trianon, Ottoman Hungary, Austria-Hungary, and Central European history explained in a clear documentary style. Ideal for history students, timeline research, and anyone interested in how borders, empires, and nations changed over time.
