00:00Why did World War I happen?
00:01In 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary was shot in Sarajevo by a Serbian nationalist.
00:08A lot of people think this is why the war started, but that's not entirely true.
00:11At the beginning of the 20th century, nationalism was on the rise in Europe.
00:15France wanted to take back Alsace-Lorraine from Germany.
00:18Germany wanted to expand its influence and extend its colonial empire.
00:22Austria-Hungary wanted to expand into the Balkans.
00:24Serbia wanted to unite all South Slavs.
00:27They were all building up their military, and Germany even built a huge navy to rival the British.
00:32However, many countries formed alliances, so if one country attacked another, the members would declare war on the aggressor.
00:38This guaranteed that any conflict would quickly turn into a global war.
00:42Now all they needed was a spark to start it all, and the assassination was the perfect excuse.
00:47Austria-Hungary blamed Serbia and sent an impossible ultimatum.
00:50Serbia refused, so Austria-Hungary declared war.
00:54Russia supported Serbia, so they declared war, which triggered the alliances, and World War I started.
