00:00How did Bulgaria's territory change over time?
00:03Bulgarians were originally a tribe located in Ukraine,
00:05and after migrating to the Balkans,
00:07they formed the First Bulgarian Empire in 681,
00:11but got conquered by the Byzantines.
00:13Then they managed to break free
00:14and form the Second Bulgarian Empire in 1185,
00:17but got conquered by the Ottomans.
00:19They later managed to break free in 1878,
00:22and in 1885, they united with Eastern Rumelia.
00:26In the First Balkan War,
00:27they fought against the Ottomans
00:28and gained a lot of territory.
00:30However, disagreements over the division of Macedonia
00:33led to the Second Balkan War,
00:34which they lost and were forced to give up territory.
00:37They decided to join the Central Powers during World War I,
00:40and they regained Macedonia and Dobrugia,
00:42but ended up losing the war.
00:44Then World War II arrived,
00:45they decided to join the Axis
00:47and try to retake these territories,
00:49and they managed to retake much of it,
00:51but they lost the war.
00:52However, they still got to keep Dobrugia,
00:54despite not having it before the war.
00:56Since then, Bulgaria's borders
00:57have remained unchanged to this day.
