Germany’s borders were reshaped again and again as small states, empire, war, division, and reunification changed the map of Europe. From the German Confederation and Prussia’s rise under Otto von Bismarck to the creation of the North German Confederation and the German Empire in 1871, the story follows the country’s dramatic political expansion and unification.

The video then traces Germany’s colonial ambitions in Africa and parts of Asia, followed by the losses after World War I, when the Treaty of Versailles stripped away overseas colonies and transferred land to France, Denmark, and Poland. It also covers Hitler’s annexations before World War II, Germany’s largest territorial extent during the war, and the post-1945 collapse that brought expulsions, division into East and West Germany, and finally reunification at the end of the Cold War.

Ideal for viewers interested in German history, European borders, World War I and World War II, and historical map changes, this animated history overview makes a complex timeline easy to follow. It is also useful for students, history learners, and anyone searching for a concise documentary-style summary of Germany’s territorial changes over time.
