Romania’s modern borders were shaped by war, diplomacy, and shifting alliances across Europe. The state began to take form in 1859, when the Ottoman vassal principalities of Wallachia and Moldavia united under a single ruler, laying the foundation for modern Romania.

In 1877, Romania joined Russia in the Russo-Turkish War and secured full independence from the Ottoman Empire. As a result, it gained Northern Dobruja but ceded Southern Bessarabia to Russia. In 1913, during the Second Balkan War, Romania defeated Bulgaria and annexed Southern Dobruja.

World War I dramatically transformed the country. Although initially defeated by the Central Powers, Romania ultimately emerged on the winning side and nearly doubled in size in 1918. It gained Transylvania, Bukovina, and Bessarabia, forming what became known as Greater Romania — the largest territorial extent in its history.

The situation reversed in 1940 during World War II.
