00:00Welcome back to the Electric Viking.
00:01My name is Sam.
00:02If you think the transition to electric vehicles is slowing down,
00:07I mean, some people really do think that,
00:09or that Legacy Auto has time to figure it out and catch up,
00:13you probably need to have a look at what is happening right now
00:15in the world's largest automotive market.
00:18And it's the world's largest by a very wide margin.
00:22About twice as many cars are sold in China
00:24as what are sold in the United States every year.
00:26We just had a major moment of consensus
00:28from two of the smartest CEOs in the EV industry.
00:32The CEO of Xpeng or Xiaopeng, Mr. Xiaopeng himself,
00:38the billionaire founder of the company,
00:40and William Lee, the CEO of NIO.
00:44Both of them have come out and independently said
00:48that by 2030, electric vehicle penetration in China
00:52will surpass 90%.
00:55Think about that.
00:56In less than four years, gasoline cars will be extinct,
01:00virtually, in new car showrooms in China.
01:03Let's break down exactly what this means,
01:06why the Legacy Auto Giants are completely doomed.
01:10Not all of them, but many of them.
01:12And the new data that proves this trajectory
01:14is just unstoppable.
01:15Well, first of all, on the Electric Viking website,
01:19I'll put a link in the description below.
01:21We have more articles about electric cars
01:23and battery technology than any other website
01:26that I'm aware of in the world.
01:27So check that out.
01:29Link is in the description.
01:32And there you'll find our videos and analysis
01:34and articles about everything going on in the EV world.
01:37Look at these numbers, right?
01:40Legacy media, they love to talk about soft global demand.
01:44You hear that so many times, soft global demand.
01:46But let's look at the actual retail numbers
01:49coming out of China.
01:51In March of this year,
01:53new energy vehicle penetration was 51.5%.
01:57By April, it was 61.4%.
02:00In May, it hit a record 62.9%.
02:04June, it hit 63.6%.
02:07By the end of this year, we're on track to hit 70%.
02:10To hit 90% or more than 90% by 2030,
02:15that might be conservative.
02:17We might be at 100% by then.
02:19Think back to 2014 or 2015.
02:23He, Xiaopang, pointed out that back then,
02:26if you told an executive at Toyota, Volkswagen or Ford,
02:30that EVs would make up over 60% of monthly new car sales
02:35within a decade, they would have laughed you out of the room.
02:38Remember back then, Toyota actually owned part of Tesla.
02:43If Toyota still owned what they owned of Tesla today,
02:46that would be worth more than the entire Toyota company itself.
02:49Just that part ownership of Tesla that they had,
02:52which they got rid of.
02:53So they clearly didn't believe it then.
02:55And honestly, judging by their current strategy,
02:57a lot of them still don't want to face reality right now.
03:00Judging by their current strategy, a lot of them.
03:03But the numbers don't lie.
03:04Consumers are tilting toward pure electric vehicles
03:06at an accelerating pace.
03:08Particularly this year, numbers are going up massively.
03:10In fact, electric vehicle sales made up 67%
03:14of that new energy vehicle retail chunk in May.
03:17What makes this 90% forecast so profound
03:20is that it's coming from two companies attacking the market
03:23from completely different angles.
03:25William Lee at NIO runs a premium pure EV brand.
03:29He's betting heavily on battery swapping,
03:32high-end luxury EVs and ecosystem loyalty.
03:35And they do do affordable EVs as well.
03:37His target is BMWs and Mercedes,
03:40but also Toyota's with their cheap,
03:42more affordable brand called Envo.
03:46And he explicitly stated at NIO partner day
03:49that by 2030, pure battery electric cars
03:51will make up more than 90% of the entire
03:53new energy vehicle market.
03:55Meaning more than 80% of the cars being sold in China
03:58will be fully electric.
04:00No hybrids, no plug-in safety blankets,
04:02just pure electric dominance.
04:05Meanwhile, He Xiaopeng at XPeng,
04:08who just debuted the Mona L03 SUV,
04:12is targeting the massive cutthroat mass market.
04:16He is echoing William Lee's 90% penetration timeline
04:19because he sees just how fast the cost curves
04:24are falling for everyday buyers.
04:28When the mass market flips,
04:30it flips entirely.
04:32If you're a legacy automaker relying on
04:34internal combustion engine sales,
04:36think companies like Mazda,
04:38Mitsubishi,
04:39to fund your business,
04:40you are looking at a market
04:41that is fundamentally vanishing before your eyes.
04:44You're basically becoming Kodak.
04:47Here's the real kicker,
04:48and the part that should terrify
04:49traditional car companies the most.
04:51He, Xiaopeng,
04:52noted that the theme of the past decade
04:54was simply replacing gasoline engines
04:57with electric motors.
04:59That part of the battle is already won.
05:02The theme of the next decade,
05:04it's the total integration of artificial intelligence
05:06and the automobile.
05:08Just AI blitz.
05:10He expects every single car in the future
05:12to essentially be a robot on four wheels.
05:16Sounds very similar to what Elon Musk thinks,
05:18doesn't it?
05:18The core of the automotive transformation
05:21is no longer just about the battery pack
05:22or the chassis.
05:24It's about giving the car a soul.
05:27I don't know if I'd call it that,
05:28but it's what others do.
05:29A soul through advanced AI,
05:31autonomous driving,
05:32and true robotic coupling.
05:34Companies like Xping,
05:36Neo, Tesla, and Xiaomi,
05:38they are becoming more and more software companies
05:41that happen to build hardware.
05:43Legacy auto companies are metal benders
05:45trying to learn how to write code,
05:47and they are bringing a knife to a laser fight.
05:49Not all of them,
05:51but many of them.
05:52While Western legacy brands are lobbying governments
05:55for tariffs and trying to slow down compliance
05:57to wring out a few more years of profit
05:59from diesel and petrol vehicles,
06:01think Toyota,
06:03China is moving to a 90% electrified,
06:05AI-driven market by 2030.
06:08The gap isn't closing.
06:11It's probably widening into a canyon.
