00:00Hello and welcome back to Simply Greg's 3 AV. I always said the moment I have a chance to drive
00:06a Chinese vehicle on Canadian soil, I would bring it to you. That day has finally come.
00:12As you can tell behind us, we have a 2026 BYD Shark pickup truck, a vehicle that has had lots
00:19of interest on the channel and I have been inundated with questions over. So today we're
00:23going to review it, we're going to drive it, and we're going to show you what it's like to have
00:28a BYD Shark in Canada. Let's get into it.
00:39And here it is, a vehicle many of you have been asking me for, and we are in Canada with
00:43a BYD
00:44Shark 6 pickup truck. Just to give you a little bit of background, so the owner is Canadian and
00:50he lives in Mexico and he drove it up here for the summertime and we got in touch and that's
00:54why
00:54we're out here filming it today. A lot of interest around the BYD Shark and it's a vehicle that has
01:00been asked for on the channel many times and we finally have one. So let's get into it. What is
01:05the BYD Shark? Well it's a plug-in hybrid pickup truck. At the front we have 1.5 liter gas
01:11engine
01:11that goes to an ECVT that powers the front wheels. There's a 29 kilowatt hour blade battery underneath
01:19the truck over here, mounted in between the frame rails and this does have a full frame. This is not
01:26a unibody vehicle, this is not built like a Honda Ridgeline and there's an e-motor in back as well.
01:33So no
01:34physical connection between the front and back. Battery range only is about 100 kilometers, although the
01:39owner tells me it's realistically 80 driving around, which is perfectly fine. Total outputs around 437
01:46horsepower and I think this thing looks absolutely the part. It looks the part, it's a pickup truck,
01:54you have your very prominent BYD logo at the front. There's no mistaking what this is and it and he's
02:02been telling me he's been getting lots of attention and I'm glad that we got to set this up. You
02:06have
02:06your light design over here, very very chunky wheels, 18 inch wheels and as I said the power output on
02:14this
02:14is about 437 roughly when all drive trains are engaged and personally I think a plug-in hybrid
02:22pickup truck is probably the best way to go because you don't need a massive battery pack. This one only
02:26has a 30 kilowatt hour pack which makes it somewhat light. I believe this is around 6,000 pounds. I'll

02:33the number in kilos. Coming around to the back BYD Tech taillights and there's no mistaking what this is
02:41with a very prominent logo like that stamped in. DMO because it is a plug-in hybrid. BYD Shark, we
02:50all know
02:50that already. That's what we're filming and it's really really cool to look at and he says he's been
02:55getting a lot of attention on this vehicle because we all know Chinese vehicles are on their way to
03:01Canada. They will be here soon and there's a lot of interest around BYD. BYD is the most famous, the
03:08most
03:08prominent Chinese automotive manufacturer and when you're driving around the BYD currently in Canada,
03:14especially here in Quebec, you're a bit of a celebrity because everybody wants to know what it
03:19is and we'll just come down under here to check out that rear drive motor in back. That's the suspension
03:26setup so it's independent at all four corners on a ladder frame chassis which has been reinforced
03:34in that area up front. Again, we're riding on 18-inch wheels over here and this is not an AI
03:41video.
03:42We're here in Bader Faye. We're just to the west of Montreal filming this now and this is here. I'm
03:48real,
03:49the truck is real, the owners over there graciously let me film the vehicle
03:55this morning which is really nice to see. It just looks so cool. It doesn't really look like anything
04:00else and it's somewhere between the size of an F-150 and a Canyon up around that or a Ranger.
04:10It's not
04:11F-150 large but also it's not Canyon or Ranger small so it's somewhere in between
04:18and I'll just give you a bit more details here. You have your NFC reader so if you have your
04:25watch or
04:26your phone you can open and close the vehicle. It does have phone key access which makes it even
04:32better so you don't need the physical fob to drive it but really really nice looking truck. A really
04:38cool looking truck and I'm told this is equivalent of $60,000 in Mexico and it comes loaded. It comes
04:45absolutely loaded and I think at that price point even in Canada it would sell extremely well because
04:51what's the price of a Tacoma these days? It's got to be getting up there and you have all this.
04:58You have zero to 100 kilometers an hour in about five and a half seconds so that is all good
05:04over
05:05here but it's just the quality that impresses me the most. Like all the gaps line up properly on it.
05:12The door handles feel nice. Your gaps all line up. Even up here on the plastic trim your gaps line
05:17up.
05:18He has a cap on it. They're sold without caps generally. That is my understanding but everything
05:24is very nice including the paint finish on it as well. Hard to tell with paint sometimes but the
05:32paint quality does look nice and I believe that this is your charge port. It does do DC fast charging
05:38up to
05:3855 kilowatts and also has standard AC 11 kilowatt on board and on the other side is the fuel tank.
05:47Fuel tank on this is only about 60 liters so still quite small for a pickup truck but I'm told
05:53it gets
05:54around 800 kilometers combined with the battery so that's pretty good range actually. That's really
06:00good efficiency. Let's go have a look inside as we'll finish up the outside over here and we'll pop
06:05inside and then we'll get on the road and actually drive it. Obviously because it's a pickup truck we
06:10have to see how big the bed is so we'll put I think we put this down two at times
06:15two and that pops down
06:16perfect so the bed I believe this is a five foot bed or about two meters not too bad lightning's
06:24about
06:24the same size based on my experience but I also believe we have 2500 kilos of towing capacity I'll
06:32leave the proper number down below and like a Ford you have your step so they brought that over
06:40someone obviously had had an F-150 and said let's put the step in the step is a good addition
06:44on pickup
06:45trucks so we'll throw that back in we'll put the bed cover back up we'll close this up and let's
06:54go have
06:54a look at the interior now so we're going to start with our door card like usual on on our
06:59channel
07:00you have this very nice red stitching over here the buttons feel extremely nice big door handle to
07:06get out no buttons here to open up your door that's very nice coming around to this side steering wheel
07:13has your usual buttons on it as well call lane keep assist all of that stuff very nice place to
07:19sit
07:20we'll cover the tech in a moment I just want to speak about the interior and here are your seats
07:25very prominently with embossed an embroidered byd logo coming down here the seat looks very nice you
07:34have all your driver buttons over here so your gear select is up on this side blind spot assist ev
07:41mode
07:41to put the tailgate down and obviously the auto start stop and all of that byd's corporate infotainment
07:53system we'll cover that in a moment and you have your second screen up here and you also have a
07:58heads
07:58up display as well so you really have three centers of information on the byd shark and we'll just come
08:05around to the back now over here don't mind my bag lots of room over here we'll sit in it
08:12in a moment
08:14you have ac 110 volt 15 amp on board your usb sockets over here lots of room in here again
08:21the
08:21same motif back here with the fabric and embroidered embossed byd logos looks really really nice back here
08:29what we'll do is we'll pop into the front now we're behind the wheel of the byd shark a lot

08:35comments i get saying chinese cars are cheap there's really nothing cheap or inexpensive in
08:40here everything is very quality everything is very nice this vehicle has about 8 000 kilometers on it
08:45as i said the owner basically got in it drove up from mexico to canada for the summer time and
08:52is here
08:52now and that's why we get to film it so really cool of him here's your software so as i
08:56said you have
08:57one screen over here and you have your main screen one of the partying pieces with the byd is that
09:04you
09:04can actually change the screen layout but apparently this won't work if you have apple carplay going it
09:10won't give you a full screen apple carplay so we'll turn that back over here and we'll go to the
09:19software
09:19we'll just play around with it a bit i'm not too too familiar with it you have your light settings

09:24here vehicle energy used all of that everything feels very good and very snappy your your adas
09:31let's try to open up the maps in here let's see if we could find the maps it should it
09:38should have
09:39maps and not carplay itself because i believe we are android based on here here's your smart charging
09:45over here that come on where the maps what am i doing wrong here vehicle image utility tools
09:54that's good can't really seem to find maps unless i'm pressing the uh the wrong button here but
10:01everything feels very quick very smooth but but for the transition is nice um climate control is operated
10:08through the center screen as well that's fine like i said we didn't get really a lot of time to
10:15uh to
10:15to a play with it we're trying to do a quick video here um utility tool data monitor that settings

10:23auto uh it might work no it won't work for their album settings yeah i must be um there we
10:30go this will
10:31give you the heads up display cellular data all of that stuff here and up on here just to close

10:39the screen so that works great i think this is a nice system uh we see a lot of other
10:44vehicles that
10:44aren't as nice as it as um this started so how long have you had it and why did you
10:51want to make the
10:52purchase to a byd you also have a model y as well right um yeah just just give us a
10:58bit of information
10:58on why you went byd what you like about the truck and uh yeah we'll just take it from there
11:03uh we had
11:04a honda pilot and where we live is um a little rule and we just need a little more space
11:11and we saw
11:12a lot of byds uh in and around mexico and and felt we wanted something that a little more robust
11:19for
11:19for our needs and you've been you've been enjoying driving it how long have you had it again
11:24uh we've had it for three months so far and we put a 8 000 kilometers on it we actually
11:29drove it up
11:30from baja mexico 6 000 kilometers to to here in montreal very nice very nice and and the service
11:36at byd how would you how would you classify their service like the actual buying experience because
11:40i think that's going to be a big question for a lot of the viewers if the byd buying experience
11:46because they're so used to dealing with your mainline frontline dealer where there's very abysmal
11:51service on the best of days so so how was your experience in that regard uh since we already
11:57own a tesla it was very similar when you buy directly from the manufacturer and the price is
12:02the price and they have their inventory and it's it's not a painful traditional process as it is so it
12:09was all very transparent process you walked in i want to buy a shark in white that's the price sign
12:15the papers and then basically just leave exactly yeah so basically like like buying a a tesla yeah
12:21now you you mentioned that you drove up from mexico um obviously that's how we got in touch
12:28uh you become a bit of a local car celebrity um we we we do appreciate it there's a lot
12:35of interest
12:35around byd these days but how was your drive up from mexico through the us and uh up into canada
12:41uh any any issues with the border crossings or anything like that no it was uh we were we were
12:49concerned just with all the with all the press uh crossing into the us and and it was absolutely
12:55painless and not a problem and we drove up through uh the scenic drive up through uh arizona utah and
13:03across nebraska crossing over from sault st marie and coming into canada you know it was uh absolutely no
13:10issues very nice and in terms of fuel economy how has it been on fuel on the city highway any
13:17so we we
13:18put just over 6 000 highway kilometers on it and averaging around 110 kilometers an hour uh sometimes
13:28120 if my wife is driving of course and then uh but typically we're about uh eight liters per uh
13:36100
13:36kilometers which i find in a vehicle that basically has the aerodynamics of a small house or garden shed to
13:43be quite good um and your overall experience from what you were telling me off camera has been
13:50absolutely amazing yeah with it it's very tesla-esque in that uh it's a very quiet car and it's a
13:58there's
13:58just been no issues it's got great brakes for a pickup truck to have the the torque passing other trucks
14:06from 120 to 140 just to get by it without any issues and without any lag it's really reassuring
14:13well we really thank you for letting us film it on the channel as we all know there's a lot
14:16of interest
14:17in chinese vehicles in canada at the moment but to actually film one on canadian soil we had to take
14:22that that opportunity and we got this set up relatively quick so what i think we'll do now is
14:28we'll actually get it on the road and we'll drive it because i'm pretty sure you're tired of seeing it
14:32in
14:32a parking lot so here we are accelerating off in ev mode in the byd shark i'll roll up the
14:40window here
14:42and as you know because we are in montreal the roads aren't fantastic but it's absorbing the
14:48bumps nicely so far in this little short section of road but very quiet very smooth inside steering
14:56feels nice you almost get the impression that you're not driving a full-framed pickup truck it
15:03feels very honda ridgeline ish if you've ever driven a honda ridgeline it feels almost like that
15:09and yeah it's actually quite nice to a drive and as i said this sort of slots in size-wise
15:16between an
15:17f-150 silverado or like colorado canyon ford ranger type of size
15:24no rattles no squeaks in the interior and all it's all just very nice in here very very impressive
15:32build quality sometimes we get into a car that has a few thousand kilometers on it and you're
15:38starting to hear the squeaks and the rattles but nothing like that whatsoever the brakes feel nice
15:44and you know this is a pickup truck at the end of the day you're not going to be going
15:47to a track day
15:48you're not going to be tearing around a highway overpass i mean if you want to do that that's
15:52that's your thing but um these will mostly be driven on the road slight off-roading going up to the
15:58cottage on on the farm and my understanding is that this is actually one of the best selling byd's
16:08in mexico and it might be their biggest market for the shark that's what my friend felix in europe was
16:14telling me the the other day that it's a very popular market for the shark in in mexico
16:27what i think we'll do now is we'll take it out onto the highway and check that out and the
16:32owner was
16:32just telling me that because it is a hybrid you can actually set your arrival state of charge like if
16:41you're going to your campsite or if you're going um off-grid you can set your arrival state of charge
16:46so the gas engine will charge up the battery so when you get to where you need to be you'll
16:51have
16:52enough battery power to power up the 120 volt inverter on board so i think that's fast that's a nice
16:59touch
17:00and we're still driving in here and it reminds me a lot of that mitsubishi outlander plug and hybrid
17:06we had byd really focused on the electrification side of of the shark because it feels like you're
17:12driving an electric truck it really feels like you're driving an f-150 lightning to be honest
17:18with you in terms of the off the line torque and the acceleration and just the overall feel like this
17:23is a very nice vehicle to a drive i knew i was going to be impressed with it because we
17:28are huge fans
17:29of byd on the channel but to actually drive one and drive one on canadian soil i think it just
17:33makes
17:33things just a bit better and we'll get on the highway here and we'll check out how it does
17:38there all right we're getting on the highway here and we are accelerating and it actually shows you
17:42power output i was up to 200 kilowatts zero issues accelerating in electric mode and we're up to 100
17:49kilometers an hour already no wind noise whatsoever everything in here feels very nice and the cabin
17:55itself is very very quiet this is a very impressive vehicle if they brought it here at the price point

18:0260 000 i really think this would be one of their biggest sellers because this does so much you have
18:08good electric range you have good gas range and good combined range it's a nice place to sit the tech

18:14nice although we didn't have a lot of time fooling around with the attack but if the tech is nice

18:20have a beautiful heads-up display another screen in front of you it's just a nice driving vehicle i think
18:26you could blindfold a lot of chinese car haters put them in here and they wouldn't even know that
18:33they're in a chinese vehicle or just hide all the badging and have them drive it they would think that
18:37they're driving a traditional pickup truck manufacturer and even at speed going over these ruts in the
18:44highway i'm not being thrown around whatsoever there's just comfort the steering feels nice it's not
18:50trying to rip your hand off when you hit a bump either so what i think we'll do now is
18:55we'll get off the
18:55highway and we'll give you our final thoughts on the byd shark what are my final thoughts on the byd
19:00shark
19:01if they brought this to canada it would sell out in fact i think it would use up all the
19:05allocation
19:05this is a fantastic vehicle especially at the price point at around 60 000 canadian dollars comfortable
19:12powerful efficient tons of space this was really cool to drive and as i said i always wanted to keep
19:19my
19:19promise of when there was an actual chinese brand in canada i would bring it to you and show it
19:25to
19:25you on the channel and i think we accomplished that today but also with one of the vehicles that you
19:30wanted to see often was the pickup truck so was the truck aspect was the hybrid aspect of it um
19:36i enjoyed
19:37driving it i didn't expect it to be this good actually i expected it to be more truck like more
19:45bouncing around but it seems the electric trucks really took a lot of that old truck feeling away
19:51this is a lovely vehicle to drive packed full of tech i'm just i'm just really staggered and i think
19:58i'm gushing a bit because i actually got to drive one 15 minutes from my house let me know what
