What on earth is next for BYD?

Howard Ritchie explores this extremely clever little car that combines an electric car with a petrol car yes, a hybrid, or more accurately a plug-in hybrid — but now it’s been packed into a compact SUV for the real world.

This is the new BYD ATTO 2 DM-i, and it brings BYD’s Super Hybrid with DM technology into the smaller end of the market, delivering up to 90km (around 56 miles) of pure electric driving and a combined range of up to 1,000km (around 621 miles). In other words, it behaves like an EV most of the time… with petrol backup when you actually need it.

With fuel consumption as low as 1.8L/100km (around 157 mpg UK equivalent), and performance that can get you from 0–100km/h in as little as 7.5 seconds (0–62mph), this is not your typical compact SUV. It’s designed to feel like an electric car to drive, without the anxiety of full EV ownership.

Inside, you get a high-quality, practical cabin with BYD’s latest infotainment system, a 12.8-inch touchscreen, an 8.8-inch digital driver display, and AI-powered voice control (“Hi BYD”) that can handle navigation, media, and general questions in a more natural way. Higher-spec models also add a panoramic glass roof, 360° camera, heated seats, wireless charging, and more.

Boot space stands at 425 litres, expanding to 1,335 litres with the rear seats folded — making it properly usable for family life.

But the big question is: does this idea actually make sense for everyday people - Isn't that a song?

00:00Here's a question, is there anything that this company are not gonna do next?
00:05They're already the best-selling electric car company in the UK
00:09and last month they demonstrated a car charging in five minutes
00:14and this is their latest invention.
00:17It's an electric car experience, but it is an electric, but it sort of is.
00:22This little car used to be just an electric car, but of course for BYD that's not enough.
00:27No, we've got to invent something else and this is what it is
00:31because not everybody, all families, want or can have an electric car.
00:35So they've invented a half-petrol, half-electric plug-in hybrid.
00:42That's essentially what this, that's a hybrid then.
00:44No, it isn't. It's a super hybrid.
00:48It's not new hybrid tech, it's already in larger BYD models,
00:51but now it's in a smaller car and that is gonna be two things.
00:55For us, exciting.
00:57For other car makers, yeah, a concern.
00:59But not only is this an affordable car, but it's also shockingly good for the money.
01:04This is what this is.
01:05It's a 1.5 petrol engine, but it also has two revolutionary blade batteries.
01:12I mentioned that, well, they won an award for that, didn't they?
01:15Yeah, we just keep winning awards.
01:16The combined range, 621 miles.
01:20That's good.
01:21Correct me if I'm wrong, but is that not a little bit revolutionary?
01:24And I think you might be surprised how cheap this is in a minute.
01:28Not just revolutionary though, super revolutionary.
01:31It's BYD, isn't it?
01:31They like to add a super in there or a flash.
01:34Look, this is flash charging.
01:35Look at the speed of that.
01:36And here's Daniel Craig.
01:38There he is, look.
01:39Well, he's flash and super, isn't he, I would say.
01:41Family life and easy living, that's what I'm picturing.
01:44Tall enough for headroom, large enough to fit people in it.
01:47And as you'll see, it's lighthearted and modern, but also faff free.
01:52And here's what you get.
01:53A Google inside, which will show you.
01:55A smart key, so you can use your phone.
01:57A wearable or the actual key itself.
02:01It's a car that has a key.
02:03And, well, you get adaptive cruise and lots of toys.
02:07It's got its own assistant.
02:09And then all of the cameras and all of the technology.
02:12Yeah.
02:13Are you going to mention how much it is a month?
02:14Yes, I am.
02:15The cabin is one of our favourite bits.
02:19This is, it feels very high end in here.
02:23I'm completely surprised.
02:25Pan roof.
02:25Some of them have got twin colour business going on.
02:28I think I prefer the twin colour.
02:31And some of them have got light headlining as well.
02:33Steering wheel is very big and soft and smooth.
02:38And we counted 25 different things in here that you can press.
02:42You can actually put 25 real things, buttons and so on.
02:46The seats are massive.
02:48They are a lot bigger than you would think for a car of this size.
02:52And they feel very much like sofas.
02:55The whole idea here is definitely comfort and making you feel nice.
03:02Two screens and this is quite interesting because you've got a nice little picture there.
03:06But then of course you've got all of your apps which you can use.
03:09So you've got the BYD assistant.
03:11You've got the Google assistant.
03:12You've got your smart charging.
03:13And then of course you've got scene mode.
03:15And then here it says 80% battery, 359 miles of range and 401 miles.
03:23So that's where we get to from the 600.
03:26Or that's actually not bad, is it?
03:27It does like a million miles to the gallon, basically.
03:30That's the takeaway.
03:32It doesn't, but it does have a six-year warranty, eight years on the battery.
03:36And you could argue BYD has spent years pushing EV and hybrid technology forward.
03:41They're also first with a car that jumps over things.
03:44Look, like a horse, isn't it?
03:46And as we mentioned earlier, Daniel, well he can charge his car in five minutes.
03:50Bet he got a free one, didn't he?
03:52A heritage of hypercar engineering is behind this.
03:55Something that costs as much as a Volkswagen Golf.
03:59Do you know what I think, do you know what I think this feels a little bit like a Lexus.
04:04A Lexus LBX or a Lexus UX.
04:07It is slightly different to that in obviously lots of ways, but there's a similar vibe to it.
04:12The smooth steering, the really nice suspension, the absolute silence of it all.
04:18It's essentially driving like an electric car all the time.
04:22The engine, you cannot hear unless you absolutely floor it.
04:26Now, it does send power to the wheels like some other hybrids or plug-in hybrids, but it doesn't work
04:34the same way.
04:35The engine works like a generator, so you don't get one pedal drive.
04:40You also don't get very much speed because the 0-60 is about seven seconds.
04:46Acceptable and always on power, but it's not a performance car, is it?
04:50What it is, it's very accomplished.
04:53It feels expensive in here.
04:55Bit of three-point turn business, just to show you the turning circle, the outside of the car, and what
05:01you can see here on the camera.
05:02So look, you can see through that.
05:05That's like, well, anything really.
05:07You press that button, you see the car, and then you press it again, and you can see through the
05:12car.
05:12Oh, turning circle is pretty good.
05:15What are we saying?
05:17Yeah, we had a Mazda the other week.
05:20That was like a lorry.
05:21And also, you've got this very Mercedes, Tesla, old Tesla, you know, gear selector there.
05:26It's good, isn't it?
05:27Press this button.
05:29Direct me to the nearest Starbucks.
05:32That was quick.
05:33It's a life-changing thing.
05:35Who needs a 100 grand Volvo?
05:36Look, it's the same.
05:38It's the same as a Volvo.
05:39The feel of it is, without question, premium and unlike some.
05:43That doesn't mean pretend premium or premium light.
05:46And you can get in one for 0% APR, 1,999 deposit, and for $269 a month.
05:52That is cheaper than one of these, which costs £335 a month and needs a three and a half grand
05:57deposit.
05:58BYD aren't following market trends, are they?
06:01It seems at the moment they're set in a few.
06:03If you are fortunate enough to have a charger at home, that's nice, isn't it?
06:07Having a nice home with a drive with a charger.
06:09I just charge the car.
06:10It's good, isn't it?
06:11Well, that's where it goes.
06:12And it takes about three hours.
06:14So you'll be doing that at work, where you don't pay for the electricity.
06:17Very good.
06:18But the interesting thing about this is it does 90 kilometers of range on electric only.
06:23You probably won't want to drive it in electric only because it does it all for you.
06:26It's very clever.
06:27As a family car, I don't even think it's a small car.
06:30I said it's a small car earlier.
06:31It's not a small car, is it?
06:32It's a medium-sized car.
06:34Look at that.
06:351335 in the boot.
06:36What have we got here?
06:37Oh, some interesting goodies.
06:39There's your chargers.
06:41Won't need that if you've got a charger at home, will you?
06:42Should we do the bit in the back?
06:44I'm six foot one.
06:45Will I fit?
06:46Actually, have a look at these door handles.
06:47These are really good.
06:49These are a big plus for me, the door handles.
06:52Here's the moment of truth.
06:53Six foot one person in a little Atto 2 DMI.
06:58I fit.
06:59Headroom.
07:00Knee room.
07:01Good.
07:01Do you know what?
07:01I need to find something wrong with it.
07:04No pull-down doodah.
07:06Right.
07:06Where's my cup holder in the back?
07:08That's right.
07:09Can't have one then.
07:10Have got a lovely pan roof.
07:11Do like looking at that steering wheel.
07:13Is it me?
07:14Or are these really nicely appointed?
07:17Look, there's so much detail on it.
07:19Who said?
07:19Yeah, very nice.
07:21Yellow stitching.
07:22Would I go for a lighter interior?
07:23Yeah, I think I probably would.
07:25But actually, it's so, I want to say, I want to use the word sumptuous.
07:30But that might be a bit too much.
07:32Does it also, from the side, look like the Mercedes GLA or the GLB?
07:36Which of it?
07:37You know that?
07:38Yeah.
07:38It's probably an accident because, you know what?
07:40They're not copiers, are they?
07:41There's nothing in their lineup that conveniently is based on something else.
07:46To me, it appears they're the thought leaders and the disruptors carving their own lane.
07:50And in this rush from the east, BYD appears to be the people that are building the luxury cars.
07:56That said, insurance, £560 on average per year does seem quite high for a car that can't jump over things.
08:04And the servicing is also luxury priced too.
08:06Using the SEAL DMI, for example, the three services across a term might cost about £1,000,
08:12which is almost double that of a BMW X1, which on average is £455 for the same term.
08:18We love this.
08:19Because any car, I know we've mentioned this quite a lot, but any car with a Google in it is,
08:23I tell you the reason I like it is because we're all accustomed now to having a two grand phone.
08:29So if you get in a car and the UI is rubbish, you're used to your iPhone or your Samsung,
08:35aren't you?
08:36DMI, by the way, stands for dual mode intelligent.
08:40It is intelligent because it's dual mode.
08:42There you go.
08:42Here's your mode button.
08:44Start stop is there.
08:45So you have an actual button to start stop.
08:47There's your volume button.
08:48There's also one here.
08:50A quick little overview of the UI because it's not toy-like.
08:55You've actually got, Tesla owners will hate this because it's difficult to open the trunk in some Teslas,
09:00unless they've updated that since I've spoken.
09:02Here is your aircon.
09:03This is what it looks like.
09:04And this is everything that you can control.
09:06We quite like the fonts.
09:07Vehicle to load.
09:08You can switch the whole thing off if you don't want to be distracted.
09:11And then you've got your Apple and Android.
09:15I'm selling this to you quite well, aren't I?
09:17Yeah, I quite like it myself, if I'm honest.
09:19So this is the camera mode, which we showed you earlier.
09:23That's Julie's house.
09:24Sorry about that, Julie.
09:25We're on location today.
09:26We haven't got time for any of that.
09:28Sorry about that.
09:29You can make us some tea, maybe.
09:30Play Store means you can obviously get all of the apps that you need.
09:34And overall, I think our highlights are the steering and the fact that this is a battery car that works
09:43like a petrol car.
09:45And isn't that the way we should have done the whole thing first?
09:50If I was buying a car for myself, as much as electric is starting to make an awful lot of
09:53sense,
09:54this does feel like the better overall package.
09:56It's everything, isn't it?
09:57And in many ways, I'd be willing to pay a bit more for it as a result.
10:00The drive, that is something you do need to experience firsthand.
10:04What at first to some is an unfamiliar new logo in front of them on the steering wheel suddenly then
10:09becomes a bit of an aha moment.
10:11An idea, you could say, whose time has come.
10:15Let's have a look at what we've got now, though.
10:16So basically 4.9 miles per kilowatt hour plus 99.9 miles to the gallon is a result today.
10:25Driving around town, stop, start at 60 miles to the gallon.
10:29So look, let's for context make this very clear.
10:32That this DMI technology is not new, not for BYD, not for anyone.
10:36It's been around for hundreds of years.
10:39But what it has done is been in very expensive cars.
10:44It's only very recently that you've seen it in, say, a Nissan Qashqai.
10:48And I think actually, in terms of the implementation, this is one of the best.
10:52I mean, I can't, I don't even think the engine's been on today.
10:55What it means is, for the first time in a car this size, at a price that some people can
11:00actually afford,
11:02the best technology is now up for grabs.
