A political controversy has erupted following remarks made by a cleric concerning the role of women, asserting that women should remain within their homes and that appearing without a veil can be destructive. An influential religious body met with the state leadership after strong objections were raised against these statements. Political parties across the spectrum have opposed the regressive remarks, while an allied league defended the cleric as a religious scholar. The leadership has maintained its firm stance against the comments despite pressure from the religious faction.

00:00The Muslim body has backed sexist Maulana.
00:03In fact, you would remember he had said that don't belittle clerics for religious remarks.
00:08He said that people who disagree need to accept his remarks,
00:13backing the brazen sexism by Kerala Maulana.
00:16The cleric has said that women must live within their homes.
00:20He had said that women without parda can be destructive.
00:23Abu Bakr had said that women must only deliver kids and that's all that they should do.
00:27Abu Bakr faction met with Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satishan last night.
00:33This comes after Chief Minister had strongly opposed to the statement that had been made by Abu Bakr.
00:39The leaders said that they informed the Chief Minister that Chief Minister had misinterpreted Islamic history
00:44when he spoke about Prophet's wife participating in the war.
00:48Now, according to Samas, Chief Minister has every right to oppose or support Kanta Puram's statement,
00:54but they raised concerns over the misinterpretation of Islamic history
00:58and stated that Kanta Puram did know about Islam.
01:02The meeting was fixed earlier, but after Chief Minister's statement,
01:05the leaders raised this issue in that very meeting.
01:14After the faction of Abu Bakr, not just backing him,
01:17but also taking this to Chief Minister V.D. Satishan,
01:21who had opposed what Abu Bakr had said.
01:23Abu Bakr, making that very regressive statement,
01:28he had said that women must say only in their four walls.
01:32They must only deliver kids.
01:34They should not do anything beyond that because if they come out,
01:37they can be destructive.
01:39Let's listen in to what the faction is now saying.
01:46They must not do anything beyond that because of Quran.
01:53The people who have said that the people who have said that they are not doing anything,
01:59they must be able to do anything.
01:59They must not do anything, they must not do anything.
02:15Let me take this to my colleague, Shibhi Molkeji, joining us on the broadcast.
02:19Shibhi do share with us the details of what happened in that meeting,
02:24given how Chief Minister had put forth his position straight up.
02:27But will the Chief Minister budge now, given the faction is exerting that pressure?
02:32Or can we see any sort of appeasement?
03:04It's not the first time organizations like Samastad made regressive statements against
03:08women, but earlier also it has happened.
03:10And most of the times we see political parties refusing to comment on it, refusing to interfere
03:15in it.
03:15But this time that was not the case.
03:17All the political parties, whether it's TTIM, Congress or the BJP have made this stance
03:22very clear that they stand against the statement.
03:24And it's a statement that should not be supported in a year like 2026 and also in a state like
03:30Kerala that always propagated progressive ideas.
03:33So, we are learning that TTIM will stand by it.
03:38Of course, they are a very influential body.
03:40They are very influential when it comes to election deciders also.
03:45But at this point, taking a political stand is very important, is what the Congress has
03:50decided.
03:50And that's why right after this statement was made, we saw the Congress ministers coming
03:55out and hitting out at the statement saying that, you know, we stand, we stand, we oppose
03:59it.
04:00But what is concerning for the Congress is the Muslim League stand.
04:03The Muslim League has gone on to shield Abu Bakr Muslea saying that he's a religious
04:07scholar.
04:08Whenever a religious scholar says something, it should be seen in that way.
04:10And he might have spoken on angles of protecting women or, you know, safeguarding women in
04:16times like this, where women are more targeted.
04:19And that's how the Muslim League tried to shield them.
04:22Apart from that difference, the Congress has made it stand clear that they stand, you know,
04:27against this statement.
04:28And whoever tries to intimidate the government also, they will not, you know, they will not
04:33give up to those pressures is what they're learning at this moment.
04:37All right, Shibi, many thanks for getting us those details.
