A controversy has erupted in Kerala following remarks by Sunni scholar Kanthapuram AP Abu Bakar Musliar, who stated that women must remain confined to their homes for safety and questioned their presence on public platforms. Samastha president Jifry Muthukoya Thangal backed the cleric, stating that religious scholars should not be belittled for speaking on religious matters and that those who disagree can choose not to accept the views. The remarks drew criticism from Kerala Chief Minister VD Satheesan, who stated that confining women to homes has no place in a progressive Kerala and cited Islamic history to counter the assertions.

01:19the remarks that the very remarks that we're referring to in the first place
01:22before we in fact proceed with more details
01:27the remarks that we need to do in the second place
01:39we're referring to Nd.
01:53I've been
02:11Now these remarks, let us tell you, have come in after Congress, the particular Chief Minister himself, VD Satishan, criticized
02:19Kanthapuram's comments.
02:21Satishan said, the view that women would remain confined to home has no place in a progressive Kerala.
02:27Now, just to set more context and bring us more details about this entire episode, Shubhimol KG joins us on
02:33the broadcast.
02:34Shubhimol, a very good morning to you.
02:36You know, not only are the remarks that have been made at this given point extremely sexist,
02:41but then the fact that there is another body that's coming in support of this very remark that's been made,
02:48that is indeed even more appalling.
02:52Oh, well, exactly.
02:53In fact, you know, after he made this statement, we saw the criticism being, you know, coming from all corners
02:59of the state,
03:01all political parties coming out, including the Chief Minister, coming out, making very strong worded statement against,
03:06saying that this is not a statement that should be said in 2026.
03:10This is not a statement that's suitable for a progressive state like ours, is what Chief Minister said.
03:14In fact, Chief Minister also went on to quote, you know, Islamic history, saying that Islamic history itself is not
03:22against women.
03:23And it's been misinterpreted and misunderstood is what Chief Minister Veelie Sadishan said.
03:27Following that, we're seeing a backing for, you know, Kandapuram, Abubakar Musliyar, with another samashta body, samashtas, another faction coming
03:35out and saying that people who are religious scholars,
03:38they know about the religion, and when they speak about religion, that should not be belittled, that should not be
03:45dismissed as such.
03:46He also goes on to say that India is a country that allows anybody to propagate their religious teachings, and
03:51that should be kept in mind.
03:53Like, it's an indirect take on Chief Minister Veelie Sadishan's statement, saying that do not dismiss somebody, a scholarly person,
04:00saying that he doesn't know Islamic history.
04:02In fact, Kandapuram, Abubakar Musliya's, you know, samashta faction also met Chief Minister Veelie Sadishan last night.
04:09That was a meeting planned earlier, but in the background of the statement being made by Veelie Sadishan,
04:15they also expressed their dissatisfaction, also protesting, saying that if you want to oppose the statement, you can do it,
04:21but do not, you know, dismiss Kandapuram as somebody who doesn't know Islamic history.
04:26You can just quote it and misinterpret it, Islamic history is what they are saying.
04:28Those are the remarks coming in. Right, Shibi Mool. Thank you for bringing us all of those details.
