00:00Experts in Leeds are conserving and cataloguing a 350-year-old fan, showing a pivotal moment
00:07from the Greek legend of the Trojan War. The folding hand fan dates from the 1680s
00:13and is carved from antique ivory. It shows the Trojan prince crossing between the goddesses
00:19Hera, Athena and Aphrodite. It's one of around 400 fans currently being cared for
00:24at Leeds Discovery Centre. Several are currently on display at an exhibition at Leatherton.
00:31Most of the collection dates from across the 18th and 19th centuries. Curators say fans were not
00:38simply practical, but important fashion accessories and symbols of flirtation and courtship.
