Dr. Reed Timmer reports from Beaumont, Texas, as Tropical Storm Edouard's outer bands arrive ahead of landfall, bringing the risk of flooding rainfall, storm surge and tornadoes.
Transcript
00:00The outer bands have arrived here in Beaumont, Texas of Tropical Storm Edward and the inner eye wall is still
00:08well offshore.
00:09It has been wobbling. It's had an interesting compact center embedded within a larger circulation.
00:15A lot of the convection has been on the south side of the storm.
00:18There is a dry pocket of air just to the northwest, but it is forecast to continue to intensify until
00:24landfall a couple of hours from now,
00:26likely near or just to the east of Sabine Pass, possibly as far east as Cameron, where that onshore flow
00:33comes ashore.
00:33We may have a storm surge of two to four feet, maybe locally higher, and we're also going to be
00:38monitoring the tornado threat.
00:40Whenever you get these dry pockets of air, these dry slots that embed inside the circulation,
00:45there is a chance of convection and supercell storms in those outer bands.
00:50We're not sure just how prolific that tornado threat is going to be with Edward,
00:54but there could also be some localized flash flooding.
00:57Four to five inches of rain possible, maybe some higher totals where you get some of the training of those
01:03outer bands as they come in.
01:05But it has been a very compact tropical cyclone that should limit some of the rainfall totals as well as
01:10the drier air that is wrapping into it.
01:13But we still expect some pockets of life-threatening coastal flooding wherever that onshore flow comes ashore.
01:20So we are about to head southwest toward the Holly Beach area, first to look for water spouts coming ashore
01:25and then to document that storm surge.
01:28But certainly heed those alerts out there. There is a tropical storm warning.
01:32There still is a hurricane watch because of the outside chance that it could intensify rapidly on approach to the
01:38coastline over the next few hours.
01:39But it looks like it's going to be a tropical storm with about 55 to 65 mile per hour sustained
01:45winds.
01:45There is a wave.
01:46So…
01:46All right.
01:46You might have heard from this.
