Tornado warning in effect in Mississippi

Storm chaser Dr. Reed Timmer is in Mississippi, where severe weather threatens to produce tornado-warned storms, hail and heavy rainfall on Dec. 9 throughout the Southeast.

00:00 A tornado warning has been issued to the south of Memphis.

00:03 I'm in Hernando right now in Mississippi and you can see the clear blue skies here.

00:08 Listen to the tornado siren sounding.

00:11 That's the direction that the storm is approaching from.

00:13 You can see that dark sky there.

00:15 The storm is crossing the Mississippi River right now and moving into an environment that

00:19 is supportive of tornadoes.

00:21 There's a pretty strong low-level wind shear in place.

00:24 You can see a mid-level dry slot that has carved out a lot of the cloud cover.

00:27 We have a little bit more instability further south on the tail end of this front.

00:32 This is a very mature supercell.

00:33 You can see the anvil coming in over top.

00:35 That's the top of the storm right there.

00:37 The anvil clouded.

00:38 You can trace it all the way back to the updraft of this storm and that's where the tornado

00:42 would be located.

00:43 It's crossing the Mississippi River right now near Tunica where all those casinos are

00:47 located just to the southwest of Memphis.

00:50 Definitely need to get to a safe place so this storm is heading in the direction of

00:53 Holly Springs eventually toward the Tennessee/Mississippi border.

00:57 But this storm is a hard right mover, moving almost due east, which means that it's carving

01:02 right into that low-level jet at an angle and that means that it has the potential of

01:06 producing at least an isolated tornado, possibly even a long-track tornado or two.
