00:01The cost of living is high and this isn't going to be for everybody, but for the people who it's
00:07for, there's nothing that compares.
00:09Welcome back to the show. Today we meet up with Zach with Cascade Campers.
00:13He's passing through New Jersey to deliver this van and he's going to give us a full tour of this
00:18Ram Promaster 1500 118 wheelbase low roof that he considers the new starter home.
00:24So join us for the tour.
00:26Hey, Patrick, like so excited to finally meet you. This is watch your videos for a while.
00:32Little about me. I'm Zach with Cascade Campers. I'm the founder and chief test pilot and designer of this camper
00:39van, as well as the other one that we built.
00:42Our last van we built 419 of. So it's definitely a thing we're well versed in.
00:47One of the big things that we really like to do is to be able to make it as affordable
00:50as possible.
00:51And so one of the ways we do that is we build it exactly the way you want it as
00:55long as you want it exactly the way we build it.
00:57And that's kind of the that's our gist of the thing.
01:01But that's what makes it so we can build you a really high quality camper van that is also affordable.
01:06So this is our new model. We call it both the medium van and the van dominium medium van because
01:14it is it's between the little van we used to build and the large vans that everybody else builds.
01:20And then the van dominium because that was really the intention behind this was to be able to make it
01:28as a place that someone could live full time.
01:31The cost of living is really really high.
01:35And how do you save for a down payment if you're paying fifteen hundred dollars a month run.
01:42And so the idea with this is you could actually move into this live in this for three or four
01:47years sell it and now you actually have a down payment.
01:50So a couple things we got going on here.
01:52Here's the shore power connection.
01:54So we do have a shore power connection even though it's designed to really not have to need shore powers.
01:59But sometimes it's handy.
02:02This is the exhaust for the S bar heater.
02:05There's actually five other metal components that we manufacture to be able to get that heater exactly in the right
02:11spot and doing it just in the right way.
02:13That's one of the big things that we do is we manufacture a bunch of things specifically for it.
02:18So also up here we've got nine hundred watts of solar.
02:22So yeah, it's a little van but nine hundred watts of solar.
02:24That's why you don't need shore power because you got piles of power.
02:32This is the vent for the Ogo composting toilet.
02:35This is also one of those things we actually make.
02:38There's over three hundred components we have designed and manufactured for this van to be able to make this happen.
02:45Because people don't make this stuff for a van this size.
02:48So we had to make it all.
02:50Oh, here we go.
02:52This is exciting stuff here, I got to say.
02:56So this is the venting system for the EcoFlow AC unit.
03:01Hundreds of hours of development time into this.
03:03The whole idea is to be able to have an AC unit that is efficient enough.
03:09And most RV units are not actually efficient from a power perspective.
03:12So the EcoFlow we love because it was designed to run on a battery.
03:15And because it was designed to run on a battery, it's actually super efficient.
03:19It uses six hundred ish watts.
03:21We've got nine hundred on the roof.
03:22So you can run the AC and charge your battery at the same time.
03:28So that was, I spent years telling people they couldn't have AC off of solar.
03:36Another one of the things that we made.
03:38So the roof rack is actually entirely our design.
03:41So they're the brackets we made there because we couldn't find anything that worked.
03:46And with this new world of the ability to get things manufactured, we literally just upload designs.
03:54I work with my son. He actually did all of the 3D modeling of all this stuff.
03:59And we upload designs to this place SendCutSend and they mail us the parts.
04:04And so we could iterate on it until we got something that was just perfect.
04:08Which allows us to be able to make that.
04:11To be able to have a roof rack that really works well.
04:15So, yeah, here is the inside.
04:19One of the big things that you'll notice here is for a van this size, it's very spacious.
04:25It feels very spacious inside.
04:26And that was entirely by design.
04:28Because if somebody is going to live in this thing full time, you want it to be comfortable and nice.
04:33And not feel claustrophobic.
04:35And the way we do that is by having this couch that folds out into a bed.
04:39Which I'll show you how the bed folds out here in a bit.
04:42But that's what allows this to be a comfortable place to be.
04:48So, we'll start kind of here.
04:50No seat swivel. I mean, you can put a seat swivel in if you want.
04:53But I find it really isn't necessary.
04:55When you've got this comfortable couch, I have a seat swivel in mine and I never use it.
05:04The other thing is to be able to get the AC to function, to be able to actually keep it
05:11cool,
05:11you've got to close off that front area.
05:13Because that front area is basically a greenhouse.
05:16And so we have this insulated curtain.
05:19And to be able to do that, so if you had a seat swivel, you wouldn't be able to sit
05:22up there.
05:23Because you can't close that space off.
05:27So, this is the step here.
05:29So we build this step out and inside this step is where that S-bar heater is at.
05:35And so that's one of the reasons why we had to design so many components specifically for that heater.
05:39Is so we could fit the heater under there.
05:41So it's all about being able to fit it.
05:44So, this here.
05:46We use this.
05:47It's a Rega Hexa.
05:50Baltic birch core.
05:52With this.
05:53I forget exactly the material that's on top of it.
05:56The same stuff we use on the floor in our little vans that we built hundreds of.
06:00Super, super solid, sturdy material.
06:03I love this stuff.
06:05And then under the floor here, there is one inch of XPS pink foam insulation.
06:12That we actually CNC cut out so it fits perfectly flat down on the floor.
06:17So that way we can get that good insulation lever.
06:21And then here, this is Justin from Vanders Van.
06:28And he added these.
06:31There.
06:32This is the bit that goes in there.
06:34So, to be able to have screens.
06:36Which is a nice handy addition.
06:40And then.
06:42So, this is, we call it the sink cabinet.
06:45But everything goes, there's all kinds of stuff that's going on in here.
06:49We got our two jugs of water.
06:51So, the way we do, the reason why we do jugs like this versus a big tank.
06:54Is, if you're in a city or you're someplace where you find a hose hookup.
06:59These, they come out and you can put them in those water filling stations that are in front of grocery
07:04stores.
07:05And so that allows you to be able to fill water really easily if you're in an urban environment.
07:10And that's really the point here is how can you make it so that this is a place you could
07:13live in an urban environment.
07:15And be able to make it so it's really easy.
07:18So, these are a bunch of more things.
07:20Where it's like, these are all things we make.
07:21So, this is like, this piece of metal here.
07:24We make this piece of metal here.
07:27And this is, you know, the spot to be able to stash stuff.
07:29And then we've got USB ports.
07:31So, fast charging.
07:33It's even 60 watts for the fast charging USB-C port.
07:36The 12 volt port and then light switches.
07:39So, we have puck lights.
07:41Two here and then two in the back.
07:44And the intention here is these knobs.
07:47There's one that you can reach before you get in the van while your feet are still on the ground.
07:51Because climbing into a dark van is not the most fun.
07:55And so, you can just stick your hand in, reach in, turn the lights on and then you can climb
07:59in the van.
08:02So, here this is, we use Baltic birch for everything.
08:06No light plywood in here.
08:09But, you know, this van is designed to, it's like 2000 plus pound load capacity.
08:14So, you know, saving a hundred pounds using lightweight plywood that's going to fall apart.
08:18You know, this is, this is designed to last for years and years and years.
08:24From a, it's especially solid.
08:30And, so one of the other things, and if you're going to live in something, a lot of times you
08:34might have to work.
08:35So, we designed a real office in here.
08:40I'm kind of a, have your cake and eat it too kind of guy.
08:43So, this is a 4K TV, which also makes an amazing computer monitor.
08:49And here you can sit and actually have a real desk.
08:53This keyboard tray bit here is adjustable, so you can get your height just right.
08:59You know, it's a little bit of a mess in here.
09:01But this is, I just made my way across the country and actually spent a fair amount of time working
09:06at this desk in this last few days.
09:10So, and the TV just pops right back.
09:16So, here we have, this is where your garbage is at.
09:19And, it's actually designed to be able to use a grocery store bag.
09:23So, you can reuse your grocery store bag.
09:25But, I'm in California and you don't have grocery store bags anymore.
09:29So, I had to actually buy a bag.
09:31But, the intention was to be able to make it so that, you know, you're reusing something.
09:35So, you're not having to buy additional plastic.
09:39And so, then we've got drawers here.
09:41And we actually have our own drawer slide design too.
09:43As it's, I didn't like any of the drawer slides that worked.
09:46And we actually make these so that this all happens and works.
09:50So, it's just a pull up and comes out.
09:56Simple.
09:56I think a lot of times the drawers, everything else is more complicated.
09:59And if you want something to last a long time, you've got to make it simple.
10:02And I think that's, the best designs are the simplest ones.
10:06So, more storage down here.
10:08Here's the little sprayer.
10:09I'll show you that here in a little bit.
10:11Here's a nice big deep drawer.
10:15And this is your gray water tank.
10:18These here are the legs that, when the bed slides out, that helps support it.
10:23And then this is a Lagoon table mount.
10:26Because I know some people really just love those.
10:29There's enough table space.
10:30You probably don't need it.
10:32But it's there just in case you really want it.
10:35And so here we've got the 12 volt cigarette lighter port.
10:39We've got another one of the USB ports.
10:42Switch for turning water on.
10:44This is the light switch for the back two pucks.
10:46This is the one you can reach from here.
10:47From this door.
10:48And then we've got our roof vent.
10:50Which is right here.
10:53So you can turn your roof vent on and off.
10:58And induction cooktop.
11:00No propane in this thing.
11:03Keep things simple.
11:04It's not necessary anymore.
11:06With battery technology where it's at.
11:08Works great.
11:10And then we've got more outlets over here.
11:14Oh yeah.
11:14Coffee from Ashbury Park Roastery from this morning.
11:20This is actually, so this is, a buddy of mine makes these.
11:23This is a living stained glass.
11:27And it's just, you know, when you're a little van, it really helps to have a fun vibe.
11:32And you can actually change out what the design is in there.
11:34And you can change this.
11:37And this is actually, it's standard.
11:41I mean, if you really don't want it, like that's cool.
11:43We'll take $300 off, but it's standard.
11:48And paper towel holder.
11:49This is where Justin put his.
11:50I've been trying to figure out the perfect paper towel situation.
11:53And I will definitely get there.
11:56Here's the sink.
11:58We actually, this is an early model of this.
12:00So we built 11 of these.
12:01This was the second one.
12:03So we actually have switched to a rectangular sink and a different faucet.
12:08That I think actually works out better.
12:10But this works out really nice.
12:12Soap dispenser here.
12:13These are the kinds of things you figure out when you're actually trying things out.
12:16Is not having a soap and having to dig around for it.
12:19And then it falls over.
12:21Ends up being a thing.
12:25So here you can see on this ceiling, we actually laser etch a wood grain pattern in it.
12:33Trying to just make it feel homey.
12:35And because the Baltic birch just by itself is just a little sterile.
12:40And this gives it more of a cabin-y kind of vibe.
12:42It's a very comfortable place to be.
12:44It's one of those that I still am surprised sometimes.
12:46Where like it's, I pull into a parking lot somewhere and I close the door.
12:49And it's, you instantly have this like I'm home feel.
12:53And you know, there was a lot of time and effort that went into designing that.
12:57So, under here, I love milk crates.
13:00This is honestly one of my favorite things because they're so solid and so useful.
13:06So, and these are the big rectangular ones.
13:09So, lots and lots of storage.
13:12And they just have a little lip.
13:15It's a little walnut strip and that's what holds them in.
13:19Works amazing.
13:20So, yeah.
13:21All kinds of space.
13:22You can get, you know, I keep clothes in one, dishes in another.
13:27This one's got chairs in it.
13:29You know, any of those different things you might want to have with you.
13:34So, back here, these are little spots.
13:39The idea with these was a place to be able to put stuff.
13:42But also to put stuff that you want to see.
13:45Stuff that makes you smile, right?
13:48Because, you know, sometimes you got trinkets.
13:50You got different little things that if this is home, you want to have that.
13:53This is also space to be able to hang some art.
13:56Sort of intentionally done that way.
13:58It's like, but we also intentionally did not put up upper cabinets.
14:02You could have, but the amount of extra storage you would get for the claustrophobicness of having that.
14:09Just was not a, it didn't make sense.
14:13So, here you've got your inverter panel.
14:15Just to be able to turn it on and off.
14:17This is the heater control for the S bar heater.
14:21And this is your battery meter.
14:24To be able to see, you know, we're sitting there at 99%.
14:27And then this is lights.
14:29So, this is another set of lights.
14:30And these are the ones you can change all the different colors and all the different things if you want.
14:35I personally really like red at night.
14:38It's just really easy on your eyes.
14:42But, it's also, you can control the white color temperature.
14:45So, it's one of those things, if you're going to do it, it's a place to live.
14:47Lighting is important.
14:48So, you can have your warm white.
14:50You can have your daylight.
14:52And it, sometimes you want the daylight light.
14:54Sometimes you want the warm white light.
14:59So, back here.
15:00And so, I'm 5'9".
15:02So, I can't fully stand up in here.
15:05It's about 5'4".
15:06But, I'll tell you what.
15:07You don't really need to stand up very often.
15:10I think a lot of people think that standing up is super important.
15:12I think fitting in a parking space is more important than standing up fully.
15:15It's just my, you know, we all have what's important to us.
15:19But, to me, fitting in a parking space is drastically more important than fully standing up.
15:23You can stand up enough so you can move around.
15:25But, you're not going to like stand here like this for a long time.
15:29So, back here, we've got our combination fridge toilet cabinet.
15:34Which, maybe it blows your mind, but I'll tell you what.
15:37This Ogo toilet is amazing.
15:39It does not smell at all.
15:41Like there's, it may blow your mind, but believe me.
15:44It's the thing to do.
15:45And there's no other place in this van you could put it.
15:47So, from the way this works, it just like slides right out.
15:52So, again, we make everything to be able to slide that out.
15:54Because how do you have, this toilet's got to hold your weight.
15:58And so, trying to figure out how to be able to do that.
16:00So, again, we designed all of that stuff.
16:04And yeah, you've got your fridge right here too.
16:06Oh look, we've got a champagne of Bearders.
16:10Okay, now, let me pop these back doors open and show you what's going on back here.
16:21So, one of the things, this is the little sprayer I was telling you about.
16:26This here.
16:29We're gonna do this.
16:32And here, you just pop this guy into here.
16:39And so, you know, if you've got to wash your dog's feet off or you want to give yourself a
16:43little shower.
16:44Like, absolutely.
16:46And then you just pop that thing back out.
16:49Wrap it up and put it away.
16:55And so, here you can see this is where the EcoFlow unit sits.
16:59And this is the inside of what's going on here in this elaborate venting system.
17:06Because you've got to make sure water doesn't get in.
17:08So, truly elaborate, like hundreds of hours into designing this thing to get it to work.
17:14And here we've got our toilet paper dispenser or toilet paper holder.
17:20The wind is blowing it so it's flopping around a little bit.
17:23But another one of those things that, you know, from driving and using it,
17:26you realize you want to just have that right there.
17:29And so, and then this is the vinegar spray bottle.
17:33Which, if you're familiar with how composting toilets work, that's a critical piece of that process.
17:40So, here's the back doors.
17:42It's again, laser etching this stuff in there.
17:46This one's got windows.
17:48And if you don't have windows in it, then we put the same sort of stretchy cords.
17:52So, it's a spot to be able to stick stuff.
17:56This is again, more of the kinds of things we make.
17:59Like it's, I want to say it's 30 metal pieces that we make.
18:04So, this is another one of those.
18:05So, this is venting for the fridge.
18:09And then down here, we've got, this is the twist lock to lock the toilet when it's slid in.
18:14And so, inside the walls, we actually do this framing system that we actually glue into it.
18:22And what that allows us is that's where we can put all the finsulate.
18:26So, it's got finsulate in all the walls and the ceiling.
18:29Before I pull the bed out here, I want to just tell you.
18:31So, I've got the whole electrical system is stashed behind the bed.
18:35So, it's in the spot that is the least functional from a space perspective.
18:40So, I was like stashed that back there.
18:42So, behind there, it's a 200 amp hour, 24 volt battery.
18:45All about the 24 volt system.
18:4712 volt is not the way to go.
18:49And then I have the entire electrical system with the DC to DC charger and charge controller and inverter and
18:56all that is also back there.
18:58And I, it actually is all on one, I call it the power plate.
19:02It's got two handles and you can pick the whole thing up and take it out.
19:05A couple connectors.
19:05So, if you ever need to work on it, you can work on it, but you don't need to work
19:10on it very often.
19:11So, it's stashed back there.
19:13And then, actually behind this here is where you access the two fuse boxes.
19:20There's one 12 volt fuse box and one 24 volt fuse box.
19:25To be able to, if you need to get to the fuses without having to get all the way back
19:30in there.
19:33And, let's see, so this is, I'll tell you, this is my favorite way for me when I'm traveling in
19:38it, is this sleeping bag.
19:40It easily just rolls out and easily rolls back up and I end up actually using this as the cushion
19:45behind me.
19:45So, I'm a big fan of when you're in a small van, you want things that have multiple, you know,
19:50they do more than one thing.
19:54So, here we'll toss the pillow here and toss this here to give us a little space.
20:00And, let me show you how this bed rolls out.
20:03But, we'll take my shoes off and this little strip here and this little handle here.
20:11And, if you ever forget, there's a happy face, a happy sleepy face on this.
20:15So, if you ever, what's that knob for, you'll know if you look at it.
20:19Pull this knob, this slides out, the bed folds out.
20:24Grab this cushion, put it like that.
20:28And, now you have a nice, big, comfortable bed.
20:33It's a full XL size.
20:36So, XL means it's as long as a queen and the width of a full.
20:41And, you also have extra space off the ends.
20:44So, I've got people that are, you know, 6'6 and taller who are perfectly comfortable in here.
20:52So, like, yeah.
20:53This is, it's a very small van, yet very spacious.
20:57Zach, this is pretty impressive.
20:58I really like the efficiency of a van this size.
21:03Especially for people that live in an HOA and they can't have a big van or RV in their driveway.
21:10Maybe they want to garage it and they have a garage door that's tall enough.
21:13This van is, what, over 7 foot tall?
21:157, 10 and a half.
21:17Okay, so you need an 8 foot door.
21:18You need an 8 foot door.
21:19So, it's not going to fit in everybody's garage.
21:21But, if you have a newer home, it'll fit in that one.
21:23Yeah.
21:25And, I would think of this as a solo traveler.
21:28But, this bed could sleep two adults easily.
21:31Absolutely, yeah.
21:32Sometimes when people build a van like this, it is for a solo traveler.
21:34But, you didn't limit it.
21:36I didn't, yeah.
21:37Yeah, you don't want to only be able to travel by yourself.
21:40Or, in the way I always think of it, if this is the place to live, you don't want to
21:45not be able to have a friend over.
21:46That's true.
21:47And, so, you know, I wouldn't say two people could live in this.
21:51But, I think one person could live in this very comfortably.
21:54And, two people could travel in this for extended periods of time, for sure.
21:58You know, being in the RV business as long as I have, I've seen many cases where one spouse retires,
22:04another one is still working.
22:06Mm-hmm.
22:06And, they'll do some independent travel.
22:08But, maybe their spouse will fly somewhere and meet them on the road.
22:11And, this would be perfect for them.
22:13Absolutely.
22:13If they could sleep there.
22:14But, the rest of the time, it's one person.
22:16Absolutely.
22:16Can you lift this cushion up once again?
22:18Because, I noticed all those holes for weight reduction and allows the mattress to breathe a little bit.
22:23Yeah.
22:24So, this one here, this is Justin's and it's as a rental.
22:27So, it's vinyl cushions.
22:28But, I also have fabric cushions that ends up being what more people get.
22:36And, if you're going to have fabric cushions, moisture can get in there.
22:41And, if you don't vent that, those cushions are going to get moldy.
22:45So, that's where the speed holes, I don't know, is so your mattress isn't going to get moldy.
22:53And, you can see just an example of the insulation.
22:56Yeah.
22:57You really stuffed every part you could possibly put.
22:59Oh, yeah, yeah.
23:00For sure.
23:00And, if you pull this up here, you can kind of see.
23:03So, this is the...
23:05So, this is version 2.
23:09So, you know, we've built 11 leaves, like I said.
23:11So, the new cover for the electrical system is prettier than this.
23:15And, these two cubbies down here, this is the only one that comes with those cubbies.
23:19That was a lot of extra work to put those cubbies in.
23:22And, the upper ones, that's standard.
23:26We don't do these anymore.
23:27And, I can see it's got a heavy latch here.
23:29Kind of like a door striker latch.
23:30Yeah.
23:31For a car to keep it closed.
23:33Yeah.
23:33That's actually something we had a company specifically make for us.
23:37Okay.
23:37The bed latch, you know, these are the things when you're building something that nobody has ever built before.
23:43Like, this whole bed sliding mechanism and all this stuff, this is our design.
23:47And, I think they're going to get a kick in that little wheel on the front.
23:50Oh, yeah.
23:51Because I've never seen that before.
23:52Never seen that, yeah.
23:53So, this is...
23:55Let me open this door so I've got a little more space here.
23:58So, this is to be able to support this front corner.
24:01And, so, when you pull this here, you can see this wheel rolls along.
24:08So, that's how we can support that weight.
24:13You don't want to have a bed that you don't feel comfortable having weight on.
24:19Now, I know at this point in the video, I read all my comments.
24:22People are like, well, how much is this?
24:23What's the price?
24:24Because a lot of times, it's not mentioned in the video.
24:26It's a link to the website.
24:28Did you have it set pricing?
24:30Yes.
24:30So, I mean, other than the computer, there's a couple things here.
24:35Everything you see, 26.5.
24:39And, that's...
24:39We put a whole lot of time and effort into being able to make it as affordable as possible.
24:45That's...
24:47That's the passion here.
24:48That's the thing that I want to be able to enable is...
24:51You know, the cost of living is high.
24:53And, you know, this isn't going to be for everybody.
24:56But, for the people who it's for, there's nothing that compares.
25:00I think you did an excellent job.
25:02I think there's a lot of value in the pricing here.
25:06You get 900 watts of solar, 200 amp hours, 24 volt lithium batteries.
25:10You get an inverter system.
25:12You're getting an S-bar heater.
25:16You're getting air conditioning that you can actually be parked and sit here.
25:19And, like, you don't need shore power and you can use air conditioning.
25:23It's net zero.
25:24A nice sunny day.
25:25Yes.
25:25A nice sunny day.
25:26You are fully...
25:28Yeah.
25:28You can easily run the air conditioning.
25:31And, the cool thing there is, the sunnier it is, usually the warmer it is and the more AC you
25:35need.
25:36And, it's a...
25:37The way that works out is really good.
25:40And, how do they find you?
25:41How do they follow you?
25:43Um, Cascade Campers.
25:44So, yeah.
25:45It's CascadeCampers.com.
25:47Just search Cascade Campers.
25:49And, you're located out of California?
25:51So, how does it process?
25:52Where a customer buys a van, ships it to you?
25:54Yes.
25:55I think...
25:55Thank you for bringing that up.
25:56That's...
25:57We do things a little bit differently.
25:59Because, the whole point is, how do we make this as affordable as possible?
26:01So, one of those things is, you gotta buy the van and bring it to us.
26:06So, we don't provide the van.
26:08You provide the van.
26:09Specifically, a Ram ProMaster 118 low roof.
26:12They only make the 118 in a low roof.
26:15So...
26:15And, yeah.
26:17You bring us the van.
26:18We're located in Northern California, near Nevada City.
26:21Nevada City, Grass Valley area.
26:23Kind of east of Sacramento.
26:25And, yeah.
26:27You bring it to us.
26:27We convert it.
26:28It takes us about a week.
26:30So, that's kind of the magic.
26:31One week.
26:32Yes.
26:32One week to do all this.
26:33One week to do all this.
26:34Unbelievable.
26:35And, that's how we make it affordable.
26:37That's our whole thing, is efficiency.
26:41Because, if we make our process efficient, that's good for us and good for you.
26:45Lowers the cost and the lead time.
26:47Yep.
26:48Well, Vac, I really appreciate you giving us a tour today as you're passing through the area.
26:53I can see the passion in what you're presenting here.
26:57And, I'll put a link in the description so reviewers can click over to your website and your social medias.
27:03Well, this is Patrick with New Jersey's Outdoor Adventures YouTube channel.
27:06I'll see you soon.
27:07Cool.
27:08Thanks.
27:08We'll see you next time.
27:08Go Geto.
27:09My favorite trailer is from the design shows up at the end of the day.
