00:00When we build this, we don't think in square feet, we think in cubic inches to maximize everything.
00:06This is Patrick with New Jersey's Outdoor Adventures YouTube channel here at Overland Expo East.
00:11I just met up with Marcus with Kingstar.
00:14They build utilitarian off-grid luxury truck campers, and you've got to see this thing.
00:19It is incredible.
00:20So join us for the tour.
00:22Hello, Patrick.
00:23Thank you for taking the time to do this.
00:25We enjoy your channel.
00:27Great following.
00:28Yes, so Marcus with Kingstar.
00:30We're out of Michigan, northern Michigan, western UP.
00:34We're a manufacturer of truck campers and horse trailers.
00:40We also do make our proprietary aluminum trailer frame where we can put this truck camper and turn it into
00:47a travel trailer.
00:49On the website, you can see that.
00:51It's our K-series trailer.
00:53But to the truck camper, we have three series, a 6-series, an 8-series, and a 10-series.
01:01We'll go over more detail what those are.
01:04This is a 10-series that we're going to do today here.
01:07This is the largest that we make.
01:10It's 10'2 on the floor, about 18.5 feet overall length, 8 feet wide.
01:18On this truck, you are at about 10'6 ground clearance, and that is due to no rooftop AC unit.
01:27We have a side mount AC unit right there.
01:30It has the intake and exhaust right on the side.
01:33It's a wall unit.
01:35It takes away from your overall height.
01:38Exterior adds maximum height interior.
01:41We're 6'8 interior.
01:44It's pluses across the board.
01:46If the thing quits on you, it's about a $400 deal.
01:51In 15 minutes, you have a new one in.
01:53It's very nice.
01:55Let's start here up at the front here.
01:58Our construction of the camper is wood-framed, and it's closed-cell spray foam insulation,
02:05about an R13, R14 value.
02:08We offer four different colors.
02:10It's an aluminum, 4-millimeter aluminum, matte black, brushed aluminum, matte white, and matte tan.
02:20Our roof system is stainless steel.
02:22All this trim work you see is armor-plated stainless steel.
02:27The roof panels are stainless.
02:31We roll our edges right here.
02:33You can see that there's no seam right there.
02:35It's rolled over to the side of the camper as well as on the top.
02:38It rolls over.
02:39Then we put this plate, this stainless steel plate.
02:42We capture the roof to the camper.
02:47In our builds, we pressurize each camper.
02:52Before we put the exterior caulking on it, we get this thing watertight.
02:58Our build protocol is such that we do not rely on exterior caulking for sealing.
03:03We do it from the backside of the cap.
03:07This is pretty much just an aesthetic, our caulking.
03:11Everything we do in-house from this TIG welding to the upholstery in the camper, we do it in-house.
03:19Thermal pane windows are standard on it.
03:23The awnings here, we can do all, one, or none.
03:29It's your choice.
03:31On each side of the camper, on the rear, and we mount our awnings lower, below the window.
03:38Putting them on the roof, it defeats the purpose of having an awning.
03:44Down here, right now, if this awning was out, this morning sun, we would have shade here.
03:50If it was up on the roof, we wouldn't have any shade.
03:54We've got our typical deal here.
03:56We have a solar port for 200 watts.
04:02Actually, you can go up to 400 watt there.
04:04Your water connection, city water for your tank.
04:08We also offer accessories.
04:12Our motto is, it's your adventure, bring it.
04:15And that's the idea, is that we provide accessories that you can add to your camper.
04:21We have various size garages for flatbed builds.
04:26We have these boxes here, the flatbed boxes.
04:33Drop down, and then also, right here, we have an auxiliary water tank package that we offer.
04:41So, this camper can have a maximum of 75 gallons of water.
04:47So, the bigger the camper, the more storage you get inside, outside, and your water capacity goes up.
04:55So, Truma Combi, right here, we do, that's an LP Truma Combi that does your hot water and your furnace.
05:03We also offer a diesel package.
05:05We offer the diesel Truma Combi as well, along with, there's two diesel packages.
05:12Diesel Truma Combi with induction cooktop, or we can also put a diesel oven in it as well.
05:19So, exterior shower, fast gun tie-downs, we provide the bracket, if you get a flatbed build, we provide the
05:29bracket for your stake pockets.
05:31We manufacture our own jack legs here, and you notice here, typically it's just attached on the vertical of the
05:45camper.
05:46We go horizontally, but then underneath, we also weld the steel plate underneath, so the load of the camper is
05:55taken by this plate here.
05:57It's not bearing on the, on the hardware.
06:02LP remotes, the downside of getting a, one of the, there's, it's not all positives, going with the diesel package.
06:09Um, and, I'd be happy to discuss that on the phone with you, uh, going back and forth if you
06:15want diesel or LP.
06:16Benefit of the LP camper is you get the LP remote.
06:19For outdoor grilling, you don't have to have little Coleman cans with you.
06:23This is the rear, uh, box here.
06:26We have them on both sides.
06:29This here is, we offer, again, the accessories on the back.
06:35This is what we call the rack pack.
06:37We have four different accessories on the back.
06:40The barbecue grill goes in here, cords, hoses, things like that.
06:45We've got a stair system that goes up.
06:49We've got the, uh, you can put a, uh, bike carrier in here for, uh, mountain bikes.
06:56Over here, the generator comes here, 2200 Honda.
07:04This 2200 Honda will run your AC and charge your batteries.
07:09Getting back to the AC, with our closed cell spray foam, our R-Value, it's insulated so well that we
07:15don't need a rooftop unit, a 13,000, 14,000 BTU, which would take a lot more power if you
07:21were going to run on the generator.
07:22Um, so this will run the AC and charge your house batteries together.
07:30We have a GFI outlet here.
07:34Two 20-pound LP tanks.
07:37If you went with the diesel option, there would be a slide-out tray with your, uh, diesel tank.
07:42I believe it's a seven-gallon, uh, fuel tank.
07:45And, uh, so skis, long items that you can slide in from the back.
07:53Same thing here.
07:55These open up.
07:58And the other auxiliary water tank is right here.
08:04Rayco Titan jacks.
08:06We go with the, um, the heavy-duty version.
08:10They're a little longer, and they're a larger diameter.
08:14They just come out.
08:16They swing out.
08:17Go back in.
08:19The awning here is a carefree awning.
08:22It has lighting on it, and it has the wind sensor in it.
08:26It's windy out.
08:27The thing will automatically go in.
08:30The rooftop unit.
08:33They come standard with a backup camera on them.
08:37We offer an upgrade, the turn over land door upgrade, which is a very nice upgrade.
08:43It's bolted.
08:44It has a deadbolt here at the top, and as well as at the latch.
08:48And this is very popular for pet owners because not only do you have the insect screen, but behind it,
08:57you have a stainless steel screen.
08:58So your dog will not come out or vice versa, a coyote going in.
09:07Here is the, uh, tower that we offer on the Rack Pack, the Gen 2 Overland Pack, and the Max
09:15Pack.
09:16And this is great for golf clubs, gun cases.
09:19If you're fly fishing, you can hang your gear in here.
09:22If it's wet and smelly, you got a shelf here for putting other things up top.
09:29And this, um, can go on flatbed builds, uh, or the standard slide-in truck camper build because we have
09:39this rack rail, what we call here, is a, um, not only does it dress off the back of the
09:47camper and adds an element of protection.
09:49You have lighting in it, but it's a universal hookup for all of our accessories on the back.
09:56They drop on these horizontal bars, and it's, it's pretty much like a Lego set.
10:01You can pop them on, um, and it's, it's, uh, something that if you wanted to have a different accessory,
10:08it can come off relatively easy.
10:11Put a different one on.
10:13This camper here is the flatback version, and we will show you the fastback as well.
10:21Flatback, it goes right across the, the fastback version, and we're queuing off of the old 60s Mustang, the, uh,
10:30fastback.
10:31It's slanted in the back.
10:33This one here, we raise the roof up, we bring the door up, and by doing that, this is our,
10:40uh,
10:41four season gray tank here, and that gray tank is when you come in the camper, that is your, you
10:49would be stepping right on top of the gray tank, and it goes underneath the shower.
10:53We offer the, uh, the three series, the six, eight, and ten, the six series in, in the standard version
11:00or the wide body build.
11:01The standard version, one, the six is for your six and a half foot beds, the eight's for your eight
11:06foot bed.
11:07The ten series also would be for your eight foot bed, but what's nice about that one is that you
11:12drop the tailgate and the camper, you don't have to take the tailgate on and off, which is really nice.
11:17The camper would come right to the end, and then the rack rails, your tailgate would be right here, your
11:22rack rails would be beyond it, and then you can put the accessory on the back.
11:27The six series, um, uh, flatback version, you could put the tailgate up, which would be, uh, for people that
11:35want to get right to the hitch, have no extension, and use the tailgate as their platform when they step
11:41out.
11:42The truck manufacturers these days offer the stair system on the tailgate, so it's a really nice deal to go
11:48with that option.
11:49Well, we went over to the outside, let's check out the inside.
11:59Starting here at the door, we have our, um, fuse panel breaker box, jack leg breaker switches, some lighting here,
12:11GFI outlet, you got, uh, uh, TP storage here, little shelf for putting a shave kit, things like that.
12:20You've got, you've got, you've got your closet right here, you've got a hanger closet, or shelving in here, um,
12:27you can put a Keurig, uh, coffee pot here, some other shelving, spices, things like that.
12:38Entertainment, microwave,
12:42Pull out trash cans, silverware drawers,
12:48True Macombie, the diesel unit is virtually the same size.
12:53All the cruisers have come with walnut interiors.
12:57This is one and a quarter inch butcher block walnut.
13:01This is walnut veneer,
13:04laminated onto a 13 ply birch.
13:08It has a very nice aesthetic to it.
13:12Stainless steel sinks.
13:15Beautiful cabinetry.
13:17Put a little spice cabinet up in there.
13:22They come standard with the, uh,
13:25three burner, uh, LP cooktop with oven.
13:31Or, you can do the oven delete and have more storage here.
13:35It's a zero dollar option.
13:36We'd put a cabinetry here.
13:41This here is just more storage.
13:43And we do have,
13:44if you have a cat,
13:45we can make this into a kitty litter,
13:47where it'd be a slide out drawer.
13:49It'd be an opening in the panel.
13:50The cat goes in there,
13:52does its business.
13:53Another little silverware drawer.
13:56We also offer a induction cooktop.
13:59Uh,
14:00that would come with the diesel package.
14:02Um,
14:02but with the LP package,
14:04we could do a,
14:05uh,
14:05a propane delete here,
14:07put a two burner induction.
14:08We have pull-down shades.
14:11We've got pull-down here.
14:14This is the storage here for,
14:16uh,
14:18paper towel.
14:19It's,
14:19uh,
14:20just the nice use of space.
14:21We're really big on that.
14:24Uh,
14:25wall paneling,
14:26stainless steel backsplash,
14:28stainless steel backsplash,
14:30Truma Combi,
14:31the GX.
14:34We offer,
14:36talking about the GX,
14:39the,
14:39uh,
14:40Tom Brady,
14:40the quarterback of the camper right here.
14:43We offer up to over 1,300 watts of,
14:45uh,
14:46solar and 1,380 amp hours of lithium.
14:49So we can build a real,
14:50um,
14:52off-grid,
14:53uh,
14:53overlanding rig.
14:54It comes with 460 amp hours of lithium
14:57and 660 watts of solar,
14:59standard build.
15:01This is the 10,000 BTU,
15:03uh,
15:04AC unit.
15:06It just works wonderful.
15:07It's,
15:08it's,
15:08it's,
15:08I can't say enough about it.
15:10It's quiet.
15:10It's efficient.
15:11Uh,
15:12that mixed with the,
15:14uh,
15:15construction of the camper,
15:17uh,
15:17with the R value.
15:20DC refrigerator,
15:23Vitra Frigo.
15:24This is a 5.3 cubic foot fridge,
15:27freezer,
15:28entertainment package.
15:30You can get the entertainment package.
15:32We got,
15:33um,
15:34storage all along the top,
15:37by the pillow,
15:38under the windows.
15:40There's USB outlets.
15:41There's 110 outlets that are hooked up to the inverter.
15:44If you have,
15:44um,
15:46a CPAP,
15:47reading lights,
15:48a marine grade,
15:49um,
15:51a skylight,
15:51which has a bug screen,
15:53blackout shade.
15:54You can set the panel up where it'll stay up,
15:57uh,
15:57for the evening.
15:59Same thing on this side.
16:01You've got,
16:02uh,
16:02reading lights,
16:03all the outlets that you need.
16:05And this is just a nice little feature.
16:07When we cut out the countertop,
16:09the kitchen countertop,
16:10where we have used this for a clock.
16:13And then there's also a cutting board.
16:16Um,
16:1710 series,
16:18this,
16:19uh,
16:20sleeper bunk is six more inches longer than the six and eight series.
16:25And it offers a really nice sitting area here.
16:29Um,
16:29you also have a hanger closet right here.
16:32There's a rod up there where you could hang shirts and jackets right here.
16:37We have,
16:38uh,
16:38more storage up here through here.
16:42And then we offer star link and peplink.
16:45And that's where that goes right here.
16:50From the floor to the ceiling,
16:52we're six foot eight.
16:54And again,
16:55I keep going back to the AC.
16:57If we had a rooftop AC unit,
16:58you have this big plastic,
17:00um,
17:01shroud hanging two to three inches down,
17:04takes away from the aesthetic,
17:05takes away from your,
17:06uh,
17:08head height.
17:10And we offer in the,
17:12uh,
17:12eight and 10 series,
17:14we offer four,
17:15uh,
17:16layouts here in this area.
17:18This is seven feet from this wall to the,
17:21uh,
17:21bulk head wall there.
17:23And 43 inches from here to here.
17:25This is what we call the command center.
17:28This is for the digital nomad.
17:30And also it's become popular for people that are no longer working where it's like a hybrid dinette.
17:38Now they got the versatility of looking out this window and just spinning around easy to get in and out.
17:47They can turn around here.
17:49You can work,
17:50you can eat.
17:53But this console in the command center comes with its own 800 watt,
17:59uh,
17:59inverter.
18:00So when you have your electronics hooked onto it,
18:04when the AC is cycling,
18:06you're not getting that potential surge coming through your,
18:10uh,
18:10your equipment.
18:13This here,
18:14uh,
18:15this rack is designed the width of it.
18:17And the depth of it is designed for a real large laptop where you can drop it in here,
18:23your iPad,
18:24your laptop,
18:25magazine,
18:26notepads,
18:26things like that.
18:28You've got your utensil drawer here for pens,
18:32business cards,
18:33whatever things,
18:35receipts,
18:35things like that.
18:37You've got filing cabinets here or just bulk storage as well as right here.
18:47This is a filing cabinet as well.
18:50It has the little notch out here.
18:52This little thing would stick in here for your file.
18:58And you'll notice that our hinge,
19:01our hardware,
19:02it's soft close,
19:03uh,
19:04hardware.
19:06And you have stainless steel marine grade locking hardware.
19:13Inverter,
19:14the 3000 watt inverter down there,
19:16you have access to your,
19:17uh,
19:18water pump.
19:19This is your battery lid.
19:21This one has 920 amp hours of,
19:25uh,
19:25lithium.
19:26That's where the third battery could go right there.
19:30This storage right here,
19:33every camper,
19:34series camper,
19:35this little compartment,
19:36this is kind of akin to the paper towel holder.
19:40We are real sticklers when we build this.
19:44We don't think in square feet.
19:45We think in cubic inches to maximize everything.
19:49And this here was a spot that this will fit three gallons of drinking water.
19:54Typical gallon jugs.
19:56You can fit three gallons of drinking water in there.
19:59You've got storage here,
20:03here,
20:04two hour layouts.
20:06I forgot to mention,
20:07this is the one layout.
20:08We offer what we call the lounger.
20:10It's a,
20:11basically a long couch with storage drawers like these underneath it.
20:15We have a couch bunk set up that sits like a couch,
20:20but then it,
20:21it,
20:21it goes up into a double decker sleeper.
20:23It's great for parents or grandparents with their children.
20:27And then we offer the dinette in the 10 series.
20:30It would be a U shaped dinette.
20:32There'd be seating all the way around in the eight series.
20:34It would be the typical dinette.
20:36So those are the four layouts that we have here.
20:41This is all in floor storage right here.
20:47Each one of these is the same size.
20:49They pick up this here is available.
20:55You can get entertainment package.
20:56It's a Bluetooth again,
20:58Marine grade deal.
21:01This is a rubber meant to be on a boat.
21:05That's just a little cover and wherever we have areas that we can put storage.
21:10We make it happen.
21:15Here is our new enclosed wet bath.
21:19We go with the cassette toilet.
21:21We can go also with a,
21:23um,
21:24compost.
21:25And in,
21:26in some cases we can do the cartridge where all the business goes in the bag and
21:31a zip locks it up.
21:32So this is the cassette toilet.
21:36And it also has a,
21:39um,
21:41privacy wall that comes out.
21:46And on the other side of the privacy wall is a mirror.
21:51So when you shower off,
21:53you have the privacy wall out.
21:55You can step out,
21:56you can dry off,
21:56and the clothes are right at the,
21:58uh,
21:59door there.
22:02Sink.
22:04Place to put your shampoos,
22:06shavers,
22:08TP holders,
22:09towel rack.
22:10We also have offer little hooks right here.
22:13So you can take your towel off,
22:14hang it here.
22:15Um,
22:16and you can hang your jeans,
22:18shirts,
22:18things like that right there.
22:20Max air fan,
22:22that's standard.
22:23It's,
22:23I believe the 7,500 model.
22:25It has the thermostat in it and,
22:26um,
22:28using it in the rain,
22:29um,
22:30designed to be when the rain is,
22:32when,
22:32when it's raining out that that can be on.
22:35So this here,
22:37we'll just check this out.
22:41You can get big time ventilation.
22:44You can actually deadbolt that.
22:46So you could keep your dog in here,
22:47your pets in here,
22:48open up the windows,
22:49have a maximum airflow,
22:52go on a hike and not worry about your dog getting out or something coming in to get it.
22:58So we offer,
23:00um,
23:02the three different,
23:03uh,
23:04models,
23:05the,
23:05the six,
23:06eight and 10.
23:07And then we offer the standard width build,
23:09which would be five inches narrower here in the walkway for the slide in truck camper model.
23:16Given that we on a flatbed,
23:17you don't have the wheel wells that offers us to get five inches wider,
23:22but we also offer,
23:23this is a cruiser and what we call our expedition series.
23:28Then we have what we call the Camino.
23:30It has the same build construction and quality as the cruiser,
23:35but it's not as fancy.
23:37It doesn't have the walnut,
23:38um,
23:39finishes.
23:39It doesn't have as much stainless,
23:41uh,
23:42treatments to it.
23:44And it's not,
23:45it doesn't use true Macombie.
23:47It does has the,
23:48the,
23:48uh,
23:48suburban,
23:49uh,
23:49heater and hot water.
23:51And it's more of a price point.
23:53Or if it's for somebody that is,
23:58they're only going to be about two,
23:59three weeks out of the year,
24:01they're going to use it.
24:01They're going to go to a fishing tournament,
24:03you know,
24:03a state over and they don't have to get the cruiser.
24:07The cruiser is designed for somebody that,
24:10um,
24:11wants a super fancy camper,
24:13but more importantly,
24:15they're full time,
24:16semi,
24:17uh,
24:17full time.
24:18And they just want,
24:19they want the true Macombie.
24:21They want to have the option of a diesel true Macombie and just the nice finishes.
24:25Uh,
24:26so that would be the cruiser.
24:27So those are the two price points,
24:28basically Chevy Cadillac.
24:31Um,
24:31I think they're all Cadillac.
24:33You got,
24:33you build a nice build here.
24:35And just so our viewers can understand the truck that this is on,
24:39what was it?
24:40A Ford F550?
24:41Yes.
24:42So it's a,
24:43uh,
24:43F550,
24:44an 84 CA.
24:46And for people that,
24:48don't know the terminology CA is an industry term means cab to axle.
24:53You take a tape measure from the back of the cab,
24:55center of rear axle,
24:57and this one's 84 inches.
24:59And then there's the 60 CA.
25:01There's others,
25:01but those are the two platforms that we work with.
25:05And with the 84 CA,
25:07that's going to get you from an 11 foot to an 11 six bed.
25:10There's some manufacturers that'll go 11 eight,
25:1311 nine,
25:14something like that for the 84 CA.
25:16The 60 CA will get you from nine foot to like nine foot six,
25:21approximately eight feet wide,
25:23plus or minus an inch,
25:24inch or two.
25:25And you need that type of truck for this one.
25:27Because this one has a dry weight with water and propane at what?
25:3149 hundred pounds.
25:33But that does not.
25:35Yeah.
25:35So that's a standard build.
25:38Now,
25:38if you start adding batteries,
25:40the batteries,
25:40I believe are 103 pounds each.
25:42You start adding solar,
25:43you add the extra water on it.
25:46So yes.
25:47And then you put all your gear into it.
25:49A lot of times you're pulling a trailer.
25:50So now you're adding another,
25:52you know,
25:52800 to 1500 pounds of tongue weight.
25:55So an F550 platform is what you would want for a 10 series camper with the garage on it.
26:03So it's all about payload and center of gravity with the wheelbase that really factor in the right vehicle.
26:09And then you make any that work with the F250 or 350?
26:14That's a,
26:16physically they will fit in there,
26:18but that is a near impossible truck to be at or below payload.
26:27Whether you're a Kingstar or any other manufacturer,
26:30and I'm talking a hard-sided, non-slide, non-pop-up camper,
26:34what we're in here.
26:36You put any one of them on there,
26:38and by the time you got full fuel,
26:41full water,
26:43occupants,
26:43pets,
26:44all your gear,
26:45a single rear wheel one ton is going to be from 3,900 to 4,500 payload.
26:53And you're going to be,
26:54you're going to bump that number.
26:55You're going to be at it like guaranteed or five,
26:58five to 10% over.
27:00Very popular truck.
27:02You see them on the road a lot.
27:03Either the,
27:04the,
27:05the person is,
27:06is ignorant.
27:06They don't know they're overweight,
27:08or they do know,
27:09and they're,
27:10they're okay with it.
27:11But we really are a 350 dually and up.
27:16If you want to maximize the Kingstar experience with all of the accessories that we offer,
27:23they're made out of aluminum.
27:24They don't weigh that much,
27:26but you're adding,
27:26you're,
27:27you're already,
27:27you're,
27:28you're adding weight,
27:29but more importantly,
27:30you're buying them to put stuff in it and stuff has weight.
27:33So,
27:33that's great.
27:34And then the process department,
27:36do you have dealers or is it factory direct?
27:38It's custom order.
27:39We are factory direct out of Michigan.
27:42So all of the transactions would take place with the factory.
27:46The reason we don't do,
27:47do dealer network is because we offer so much.
27:51We offer four different layouts,
27:54different decors,
27:56different accessories.
27:57So whatever the dealer has on the lot,
27:59you can guarantee it's not what the customer wants.
28:02And it's just doesn't work out for good for the dealer.
28:04It doesn't work out good for the manufacturer.
28:06Well,
28:07I'll make sure I put a link to Kingstar.net.
28:09That's correct.
28:10That's your website.
28:11So the viewer could click over and they could check out pricing and different options and contact you directly.
28:17I appreciate the tour today.
28:18We're kicking off the second day of Overland Expo East here in Virginia.
28:23This is Patrick in New Jersey's outdoor adventures YouTube channel.
28:26Thanks for joining.
28:28Appreciate it.
