00:24I have a dude that is shining this guy in the face and his dog is barking at him and
00:30he's threatening him.
00:31Okay.
00:31Right outside Gateway.
00:33On Michigan Street.
00:35Gateway?
00:35On Gateway, yes.
00:36And what's going on?
00:39This guy is wearing a black jacket and he's carrying a water and he's got a hat on and
00:44he's threatening a resident here.
00:47Alright.
00:48He's flashing a flashlight right in his face.
00:52Alright.
00:53He said the Michigan Street side.
00:54We've already got a call.
00:55We'll get him over there.
00:57Okay.
00:57Please hurry.
00:58One 911 caller reported that a man had stabbed a woman and was attempting to flee the scene
01:03in his car.
01:04Another caller reported hearing one gunshot and seeing a victim on the ground.
01:08Multiple officers immediately responded.
01:11When officers arrived at Gateway Towers, they found a woman clutching her chest.
01:16She was bleeding profusely from a stab wound in her upper right chest.
01:20Despite the severity of her injury, she managed to tell officers he stabbed me.
01:24Stabbed.
01:25Right here.
01:25Where?
01:26In your chest?
01:27Yeah.
01:27Okay.
01:30I can't.
01:30Keep some pressure on it, okay?
01:31He just got ran over.
01:33Okay.
01:33Keep your pressure on it.
01:34I can't.
01:36Who stabbed you?
01:37I have an ambulance coming, miss.
01:38Alright?
01:38I want you to know.
01:39Ask them to know.
01:40I don't know the dude who lives here.
01:42Ask them!
01:42Okay.
01:43How many people were in the car?
01:43I'm bleeding out of my chest.
01:44I got an ambulance coming for you.
01:46It's just one dude.
01:47One guy.
01:48And he just hit him.
01:49I'm bleeding out of my chest.
01:51I don't got...
01:51I have an ambulance coming for you.
01:53Okay.
01:53Can I take my dog and go up to my apartment, please?
01:55Put him in my apartment, please.
01:56Put him in my apartment.
01:57I don't know.
01:58Just stab me in my chest.
02:00If you can take the dog, I can help you with the wound.
02:02Yeah, I can.
02:03Okay.
02:03Can you get the dog inside?
02:04I can.
02:05Yep.
02:05I can't breathe right now.
02:06Hold on.
02:06Okay.
02:07Okay, sir.
02:09Nearby, officers found a man who told them that he and the other victim were a couple
02:13and lived in the apartment complex.
02:16Earlier that night, they'd been confronted by a man who refused to let them into the building,
02:20claiming they didn't live there.
02:22He stabbed my girl.
02:23I started chasing him.
02:24Wait, so when did that happen, the stabbing?
02:27I didn't even know he did it until I seen it and she started screaming and he started
02:32running away.
02:33So, was that after you got hit by the car?
02:35No, I got hit after he stabbed her because I'm like, get in the car, leave dude.
02:40And he got in his car but he came at me.
02:44He was trying to block the door.
02:46Who was he?
02:47The guy that was in that car.
02:49Do you know him?
02:50I do not.
02:50He was trying to get in the building and this guy was flashing his flashlight in his
02:55face.
02:56Who was trying to know?
02:56The guy that hit him?
02:58The guy that hit him was flashing the light.
03:00Okay.
03:01Like through the front door?
03:02He was trying to block the front door from him getting in.
03:04With his car or with his body?
03:06With his body.
03:06Okay.
03:08So, then I pulled up and I stopped because I saw him and he was going to go fight him.
03:13And I stopped and I said, get off him, get off him.
03:15He lives here.
03:16And then he hit me with what, I don't know, but he hit me in the arm.
03:21Right here, as you can see there's a bruise for me.
03:23He hit me in the arm to try to back me off.
03:26And I said, dude, he's riling his dog up.
03:28And then she chased him.
03:30He was trying to go to his car.
03:31He turned around and stabbed her in the chest.
03:34Okay.
03:35A witness described how she saw the altercation escalate as the suspect shined a flashlight
03:40in the victim's face.
03:41When she tried to intervene, the suspect struck her in the arm before fleeing the scene.
03:46He was yelling that someone was just stabbed.
03:49So, no response.
03:50I'm yelling.
03:52Murphy City, mailed the dad.
03:54You know.
03:55911.
03:58Hello, this is Corey Bowen.
04:02I live at the Gateway Tower and two people just came in behind me.
04:08And I asked them not to come in behind me and they threatened me and said, if you touch me,
04:15I don't know exactly what they meant, but it seems threatening.
04:21How do they threaten you?
04:22I don't know who these two individuals are.
04:24I don't know their names before you even ask.
04:27How did they threaten you?
04:28He said, if you touch me, just remember that.
04:32Okay.
04:33That's what he said.
04:34He just came right in behind me.
04:37Didn't have a key fob, nothing like that.
04:41Got right in my face and told me that if I touched him or else, I better remember that.
04:47And where do they go then after they got into the building?
04:50They went into the elevator.
04:52Okay.
04:53And maybe where they went after that?
04:55Is it my job to follow them?
04:57No, I'm just, where are the police going to find them is the problem, is what I'm asking.
05:01Well, how am I supposed to know that?
05:03You want me to follow someone who's just threatened me?
05:06No, I didn't ask you to do that.
05:06Is that what you're saying?
05:08No, I'm asking if you knew where they went.
05:09That's kind of what you're saying.
05:10No, I did not ask you to follow them at all.
05:12I don't want you to do that.
05:14So...
05:15So how am I supposed to know where they're going?
05:17So then you just say, I don't know where they went, is all you had to say.
05:22Okay?
05:22All right.
05:23And can you give me a description of what these people look like?
05:25Were they male or female?
05:26How about y'all check the f***ing cameras yourselves and find out?
05:30How about that?
05:31They may not have access to those cameras at this time of the day.
05:36So if they...
05:36Well, maybe they need to get a warrant and check them then.
05:39Okay.
05:39Well, by the time they get a warrant and check them, it's going to be tomorrow sometime if they could
05:44even get a warrant.
05:45Well, I don't give a f***, dude.
05:47That's your job.
05:48Okay, well...
05:49How about that?
05:50Fuck off, dude.
05:51I'm threatening you that you could give me a description.
05:58A short time later, officers spotted the suspect still in the vehicle and engaged in a pursuit.
06:04Heading northbound on Interstate 35.
06:07Suspects are leaving in another vehicle.
06:10They were passing her in no-help caps.
06:13I think I'm behind that vehicle on the visex, going north on the 35.
06:2110-4.
06:25Yeah, there is a bystander pointing towards the viaduct.
06:28Where are you at, 4-7?
06:33Just getting on the 35, going into the toll.
06:4110-4.
06:4210-4-3-5 will be with 4-7 if the people want to go.
06:46So...
06:47Mister, have license.
06:514-7 will be with 8.
06:53It's going to put a key, Mary-Kell.
06:547.
06:57That looks like it.
06:58Affirmative northbound I-35.
07:02Oh.
07:04Oh.
07:05Oh.
07:07Coming up to 21st east of the bottom aisle.
07:16Let's see what's the plan here.
07:18We're going to see what's going on at the scene, but we'll knock it down.
07:23We just want more moves.
07:24We're heading to the south side of Gateway.
07:26We've got a female that is stabbed in the chest.
07:29A male that takes the car.
07:3310-4.
07:4010-4.
07:5310-4.
07:54Who's out of there?
07:54Just before the exit to 21st.
07:58Good work.
08:05Hey!
08:06Get out of the car!
08:06Let me see your hands!
08:07At this time law 3 is closed for the stabbing law 3 is closed.
08:08Officers were able to successfully stop the vehicle and take the suspect into custody.
08:13At this time law 3 is closed for the stabbing law 3 is closed.
08:16He was identified as 31-year-old Corey James Moen.
08:20When officers arrested him, they found he was bleeding from a wound on his forehead.
08:24Inside the car, police found a bloodied knife and major damage to the windshield,
08:29which aligned with the victim's account of being struck.
08:33Moen initially refused to acknowledge his Miranda rights,
08:36but eventually waived them and offered a statement.
08:38I felt like I should be released here.
08:41After having a medical see me here, then you should let me go.
08:46Okay.
08:47I did my best.
08:49So you don't want me to just give you a ride to the hospital and then we can talk there?
08:52Can I speak without being interrupted, please?
08:55Absolutely. I apologize.
08:57I did my best to protect this.
09:01That's the best I can do.
09:04You couldn't find a towel or anything?
09:07I'll double check again.
09:09I thought May would be here quicker.
09:11He said he acted in self-defense, that the victims had been aggressive
09:15and were trying to get in the building without keys.
09:17You're lying to me.
09:20I promise you.
09:21It might be in the call somewhere, but I'm in charge of you.
09:23I'm here to make sure you're okay.
09:25I'm still lying to you.
09:26So do you want to tell me what happened from your point of view?
09:29I was assaulted by three different people.
09:32Okay.
09:34The one guy had a swinging weapon.
09:39I'm not exactly sure what it was.
09:41Okay.
09:42I kept asking him to please stop.
09:45Please stop.
09:46This is going to be over with.
09:49I don't want anything to do with you.
09:51Please leave me alone.
09:53I don't want to fight you.
09:55You kept coming at me.
09:56You're saying he was blocking my car while attacking my car.
10:00He smashed my windshield in my face that caused cuts in my face.
10:05Okay.
10:06You really think I'm going to stop and let him continue?
10:09I have a right to defend myself and you know it.
10:13You know I have a right to defend myself.
10:16It's the law that I do.
10:17Yes, and if that's the case, then the charges will be dropped.
10:20There's nothing you can do tonight to change that.
10:21Why are they not arresting him when he assaulted me?
10:25Look at the stitches on my face.
10:26Right.
10:27There's also someone with a stab wound at another hospital.
10:29So if you want to puff your chest and get all high feet, I'm just going to put you in
10:32cuffs.
10:32So why would you arrest the guy that assaulted me, huh?
10:34What do you think that I did this to myself?
10:36Despite Mowen's claims, the evidence quickly began to contradict his story.
10:41Investigators reviewed multiple angles of surveillance footage.
10:44They showed the moment Mowen confronted one of the victims,
10:47shining a bright flashlight into his face.
10:49After an argument, the situation escalated, leading to the stabbing and hit and run.
10:54The footage confirmed that Mowen had driven his vehicle straight into the victim,
10:58striking him and causing significant damage to the windshield,
11:01just as officers had observed at the scene.
11:04Corey James Mowen was initially charged with two felony counts of second-degree assault
11:09with a dangerous weapon and misdemeanor fifth-degree assault.
11:13He pled not guilty in July 2023.
11:16In September 2023, a jury found him guilty of all three charges.
11:21In April 2024, Mowen was sentenced to 18 months and 23 months in prison
11:26for each of the second-degree charges and 90 days for the fifth-degree charge,
11:31with credit for time he already served.
11:34His concurrent sentences amounted to a little over 15 months in prison.
11:39In Minnesota, most offenders served two-thirds of their prison sentence in custody
11:43and the last third on supervised release.
11:46As of publication, the Department of Corrections says he's expected to be released on December 9, 2024.
