01:14So, going on that band, you're like four.
01:18It's shallow water.
01:19Oh, s**t.
01:21Thanks, man.
01:22I don't go on the water enough.
01:24Thanks, brother.
01:25This is my first time.
01:27It's crazy.
01:28Oh, these are not waterproof.
01:31Can you get down there?

01:34Right there, his intestines are completely out in the water.
01:37Completely out.

02:13they can face months of paperwork, enormous medical bills, and life-changing impacts.
02:17When you're seriously hurt, you could be entitled to millions of dollars in damages.

02:26Morgan and Morgan has a huge network of over 1,000 attorneys and offices in every state.

08:03This guy that only had the smaller stab wound in his belly, that guy, tells me that he had
08:09like a buck knife and said it was no longer than like this.
08:13But he said he just kind of came out of nowhere and pushed his brother and then
08:17everything got to be a blur.

09:07Cell phone footage from the scene shows the suspect,
09:11Nikolai Mew, being confronted by a group of tubers,
09:14including 17-year-old Isaac Schumann of Stillwater.
09:18Witnesses say the group was initially trying to intervene
09:21after Mew had allegedly been bothering young women in the area.
09:24Moments later, Mew pulled out a knife.
09:28What is he on?
09:30Whoa.

11:44Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my God.
11:50Are we serious? Is this real?
11:53Oh my God.
11:55Who is that?
11:57Miyu had fatally stabbed Schumann and wounded four other victims,
12:00with serious injuries to their upper torsos and abdomens.
12:04A 24-year-old woman from Burnsville, a 22-year-old man from Elk River,
12:09and two young men from Luck, Wisconsin were transported to the hospital.
12:14Their conditions ranged from critical to serious, with some requiring emergency surgeries.
12:18A massive manhunt then ensued as officers from multiple jurisdictions converged on the area.
12:24Body cam footage obtained by Midwest Crime shows officers arresting Miyu about 90 minutes after the stabbing.
12:30Investigators said he discarded the knife and changed clothes before his arrest.
12:36Our current witness says that the male appears to be wearing a camel-colored shirt.
12:40Put your hand in the back.
12:41Okay.
12:41Yes.
12:43Just talking. I'm sorry.
12:44I'm sorry, yeah.
12:45No, I'm just being detained at this point, okay?
12:47Yes.
12:49What are we checking now?
12:51I'm checking.
12:5436 dispatch. Believe we have the suspect detained.
12:56Believe we have him detained at this time.
12:58No.
12:58No weapons were up in the cap?
13:00We don't even have my shoes on.
13:02Okay.
13:16I got a photo on my phone. I'll be there in a second.
13:18Yeah.
13:21Chain matches.
13:23Shorts.
13:26What's your name?
13:27Nick.
13:28Nick what?
13:29Nick Mew.
13:30Okay.
13:30What did he do?
13:34This way.
13:35Bring on my quad.
13:37He's not double locked at this point.
13:39Alright, we'll worry about it over here.
13:41He's got a silver chain on him.
13:45Silver blockchain.
13:50Same shorts.
13:52Let me double lock this quick.
13:54Let me just run over.
13:57Never.
13:59Like I said, sir, you're just detained at this point, okay?
14:01I'll explain anything in a second here.
14:03He's got some pretty good markings on his hand, too.
14:05Alright.
14:06Um, to make your job easier, we just located our suspect.
14:10Hi.
14:11Can you step out for a second?
14:13We just want to check you out.
14:15Are you injured at all?
14:16No, other than my butt.
14:17Very injured and scratched.
14:18Your butt's injured?
14:19Well, from sliding all over the stones.
14:22Oh, the rocks?
14:23Yeah.
14:23Alright.
14:23And my hand, I think.
14:25Okay.
14:25Take a look at your hair.
14:26Yeah.
14:28He said, get out of there because we don't know what's going on.
14:30And he's run this way.
14:31And he said, they're taking my knife.
14:34That's it.
14:35They're punching him.
14:36He told me, they're taking my knife.
14:37So, people were punching him.
14:40Where were they punching him on his body?
14:43He punching, I don't know, in the face or here, they're punching down.
14:47And when he get out, that's when I tell him, get out there because I don't know.
14:53And when he coming around to us, they're taking my knife.
14:58And later, we find out what's going on.
15:01Still doing all right?
15:02Yeah.
15:03Okay.
15:04What's going on?
15:05Temperature?
15:05Temperature's okay in here?
15:06Yeah.
15:07Okay.
15:07Somebody, I hear somebody got stabbed.
15:10And I feel the description.
15:11Yes, you do.
15:12All right.
15:13Yep.
15:13So, we're working through that now.
15:15Did you see that fight on the river?
15:16I heard about it.
15:17You heard about it?
15:18Yeah.
15:18And I've seen people gather around it.
15:20Okay.
15:21All right.
15:22And I went over to talk to see if somebody saw anything.
15:25But that's about it.
15:26Okay.
15:27Our whole group was pretty interested in finding out what happened.
15:31Okay.
15:32And that's your whole group over there?
15:34Yeah.
15:35Yeah.
15:35Okay.
15:36All right.
15:37So, I don't know.
15:39Okay.
15:39Well.
15:40Did you see anybody injured?
15:41No.
15:42You didn't see anybody injured?
15:44Did you see anybody fighting?
15:45I heard people screaming at each other, yes.
15:48Okay.
15:48Yeah.
15:49Screaming in anger or screaming in pain?
15:51Do you know?
15:54Everybody's drunk.
15:55So, I don't know.
15:55So, I don't know.
15:55I can't tell the difference.
15:56But I would say, I don't know, just screaming.
16:02Okay.
16:03You know, calling each other names.
16:06And it's, I've seen that all day.
16:09Thank you guys for all your help.
16:10Thank you for having me.
16:10And we've all been drinking a lot.
16:12I'm sure they're drunk.
16:13I'm sure they're doing, I don't know.
16:18Okay.
16:19Kids being kids.
16:21Kids being kids.
16:22Where are you, where's your group from?
16:26Where did you drive from today?
16:28I drove from Pryor Lake.
16:32From Pryor Lake.
16:33Okay.
16:33Actually, I didn't even drive.
16:35We can't get around.
16:37Your wife and you?
16:38Yeah.
16:39And you met the group here?
16:40Yeah, but we know each other.
16:42Okay.
16:43All right.
16:43As long as the temperature's good, I'll check back with you in a minute, okay?
16:47The St. Croix District Attorney described the attack as graphic and horrific,
16:51arguing that Mew's behavior after the stabbing,
16:54discarding the weapon, pretending not to know what happened,
16:57showed his intent to avoid responsibility.
17:00So right now you're being placed under arrest, okay?
17:04You're being placed under arrest for homicide and attempted homicide.
17:08That's all we're going to discuss with you right now.
17:11More than likely an investigator will come talk to you at the jail.
17:14All right?
17:15Okay.
17:17All right, come over to this door here.
17:19Okay.
17:21At trial, Mew's attorneys argued that he acted in self-defense after being attacked.
17:26Prosecutors, however, presented the video footage to show that Mew escalated the conflict
17:30and could have walked away.
17:32Part of what makes this so tragic and horrific is how easily Nikolai Mew could have avoided
17:37all of this.
17:38As I said, after he was insulted, he could have just let the boys float away.
17:43Instead, he charged up onto them.
17:46When the boys were yelling at him to leave, he doesn't.
17:49When another group comes to intervene to help to yell at him, tell him to leave, he doesn't.
17:54Instead, while multiple people are telling him, pleading with him, yelling at him to leave,
17:59he's smirking and he takes out his pocket knife.
18:01During the sentencing hearing, Isaac Schumann's mother gave an emotional statement.
18:05She urged the court to impose the maximum sentence.
18:08When was the last time you saw Isaac Wyatt?
18:15The morning of July 30th, before he left, he originally told me in the morning that he
18:19was going to go golfing.
18:21He came out and said, some of the guys are going tubing on the river.
18:26And I said, okay.
18:29And the way I said, okay, wasn't like, I was super excited about it.
18:36And he's like, why?
18:37And I said, well, I was going to ask you to pick Dad up from the airport until I got
18:40a
18:40flight home.
18:42And he said, I can pick Dad up.
18:45And I said, no, just go have fun with your friends on the river.
18:50Mew also spoke at the hearing, apologizing to Schumann's parents.
18:54I would like to start by letting you know how deeply sorrowed I have been.
18:59I am and I will always be for the real fact that Isaac is not with you anymore.
19:05And that I was directly involved in his very tragic and unimaginable death at such an early
19:13age.
19:14I never meant for this tragedy to occur.
19:18My soul is broken.
19:20My heart is very heavy.
19:22I pray to God for forgiveness, compassion, and love for everyone affected directly and
19:30indirectly by the outcome of this tragic event.
19:33Mew's defense team argued that he felt trapped during the confrontation and acted to protect
19:38himself.
19:38But the judge ultimately rejected those arguments.
19:41Although Mr. Mew may not pose an imminent risk to the public, the public does have a strong
19:47interest in holding people accountable who breach the social compact and commit crimes.
19:53For count one, I will impose a term of initial confinement of 20 years, followed by six years of extended
20:02supervision.
20:03Prosecutors had requested a 70-year sentence, but the court ultimately handed down a 20-year
20:09term.
20:10Mew faced up to 100 years in prison on multiple charges, including reckless homicide and reckless
20:16endangerment.
20:17But the judge sentenced him to 20 years for killing Schumann.
20:21With an additional six years of supervised release, the five-year terms for each of the
20:25injured victims will run concurrently with the 20-year sentence.
20:29Mew, now 54, will be in his 70s by the time he's eligible for release.
