In May 2025, a "person with a gun" call in Chicago's Hegewisch neighborhood ended in a police shootout across the state line in Hammond, Indiana. Joseph Navarro, 50, was wanted on an aggravated battery warrant. He fled officers at high speeds, crashed and then crawled from the overturned vehicle, opening fire on two officers. 09:32After being struck multiple times during the exchange of gunfire, he was transported to St.
09:37Catherine Hospital in East Chicago, Indiana, where he was pronounced dead.
09:42Court and police records show Navarro had previously been identified as the suspect in an aggravated battery involving a handgun
09:49on April 13, 2025.
09:52None of the officers involved were struck by gunfire.
09:55Two officers were taken to a hospital for observation and were later reported to be in good condition.
10:01In accordance with department policy, the officers were placed on routine administrative duties while the shooting remains under investigation.
