00:14especially in O'Connell Street.

00:29It's kind of dangerous, you know.
00:31Now, some local residents and business owners
00:33want the speed limit on the busy thoroughfare
00:35reduced from 50 to 40 kilometres per hour,
00:39a cap already in place in many populated streets across Australia.
00:43It's not unreasonable for people to demand
00:46the same kinds of protections from the city of Adelaide.
00:49A possible reduction is now being debated by Adelaide City Council,
00:53which requires state government approval for change.
00:56According to the RAA, 85% of cars on main roads like O'Connell Street
01:01are already averaging just 37 kilometres an hour during peak periods.
01:05So change would make little difference to most commuters' travel times.
01:09But some say it's still worth considering.
01:11It's going to have almost no impact on people who currently drive through the area.
01:16But what the lowered speed limit does is it manages driver expectations.
01:20People need to get into the city, go to work,
01:22and I'd just be worried that there'd be backup traffic,
01:26people taking alternative routes.
01:28Nearby Melbourne Street has already been approved for a reduction to 40 in coming weeks,
01:33with a motion to limit O'Connell Street going to council on Tuesday,
01:37a change potentially part of a wider revitalisation of the popular precinct.
