00:05I'm very proud of Meg, super proud. Her story along with Amy is actually part of me and part of
00:13my
00:13story. Hello my sweetheart. Hello my gorgeous. Are we going walking? Are we going walking?
00:30Mwah. Beautiful girl.
00:45And if you want to my girl, yeah. Yeah.
01:05And here. You've been such a good granny. Wow. I thought maybe it would be a bit tricky to get
01:16Meg to come walking,
01:17but clearly she wants a little bit of time out.
01:25There we go. And then on we go. On our walk Meggie.
01:37And what's really awesome is that she was rearing to go today and hello my gorgeous girl.
01:48Hello. Yes. Gorgeous. She was rearing to go today guys, which is wonderful because for a couple of walks,
02:01she's just said no, she hasn't even approached the car. So I've attempted to make those videos,
02:07but I ended up having to abort because we would literally come up to her camp park there and she
02:16just would not come up. So, you know, maybe she felt a bit of guilt, as I said, leaving icky,
02:25but that certainly is not the case today.
02:29She is a happy cat. She's lost a lot of the spring in her step. I will say that, Meggie.
02:41But this is going to be fun. Let's go down here.
02:53I've noticed it in dear old Meg, you know, the hamstrings, the muscles in the front, the bum, it's all
03:06wasting away.
03:08Muscle atrophy is a real thing in old age, but 23 coming up is a massive innings for a lion,
03:22guys.
03:22And I'm very proud of Meg, super proud. This girl, you know, continues to impress, continues to amaze.
03:32She's been such an inspiration to so many people around the world since she was a young cub.
03:43And her story, along with Amy, is actually part of me and part of my story.
03:50We got the stalkers.
04:02Hello girl. So good to see you. So really good to see you guys.
04:10This lioness is, you know, a massive part of my life.
04:18Her sister and her literally changed the trajectory of my life.
04:26For those of you who don't know the story of Meg and Amy, I suggest you go and look at
04:32other videos or, you know, look at other documentation or documentaries that describe how lucky this cat was.
04:42And how amazing she is. And that her and her sister highlighted the plight of lions in captivity and highlighted
05:00how dire the lives of many cats in South Africa are.
05:07Those that are those that are just destined to be hunted.
05:12And canned hunting really, guys, is just quickly, it's, it's, it's, it's when a lion is put in an area
05:19where it literally cannot escape.
05:21It's got no mechanism to, to, to evade the hunter.
05:25And normally, uh, canned hunting occurs, um, when captive or captive born or even hand raised lions.
05:35So they're either born in captivity or raised by humans, which makes it even worse in my opinion.
05:40But they're raised up to purposefully for the, for the sole purpose of being, being shot as a trophy.
05:48And, um, it really is despicable.
05:52It's still ongoing and it's, it's really despicable despite, oh, look at you, my girl, you get tired.
05:59Somebody gets tired and that's okay.
06:02That's what the walks are about.
06:04It's just about being out here in the bush, my darling, darling, darling.
06:10This is, this is really what it's about, guys.
06:13It's just about her doing what she wants to do.
06:17And if it's walk 600 meters and relax, then so be it.
06:23We're just going to enjoy some quiet time together now.
06:27...
06:33...
06:42...
07:10All right.
07:13All right.
07:39Okay, so I use this opportunity to inspect her, look at all her features, her teeth, her claws.
07:50Look for any claws that may be growing into the paw pad.
07:54There's her teeth.
07:59Still so incredible for this age.
08:03Amazing.
08:07Okay.
08:13Okay.
08:14Okay.
08:22Okay.
08:29Okay.
08:30Okay.
08:34Right.
08:34Just took a lovely rest, had a 10-15 minute break and now she's heard something.
08:45So we're heading off down a road that's no longer really a road.
08:54Certainly good exercise.
08:57Making our way towards the river.
09:00I wouldn't go that way my girl.
09:03Meg?
09:05Okay.
09:06You do your thing.
09:07Oh!
09:08Yeah.
09:09This way book.
09:10Magali?
09:10Yeah.
09:12Yeah.
09:13This way.
09:17Listening today.
09:18That's...
09:19That's good for Meg.
09:24Unusual.
09:25Somebody likes to do her own thing.
09:27Let's go this way.
09:33This way.
09:34This way.
09:35Come.
09:36This way.
09:37Meg?
09:37Yeah.
09:46Oh.
09:46She decided to go her own way.
10:12Beautiful little river.
10:14Maybe she'll take a drink.
10:16Yeah.
10:16You want a drink?
10:19Hmm?
10:23Yeah.
10:45Nothing like drinking fresh river water.
10:55Part and parcel of having the walk.
10:58She might take a lie down here as well.
11:01Let's see.
11:05I just got attacked by a spiderweb.
11:12My pet hate.
11:14I can't tell you how much I dislike spiderwebs.
11:34I can get these off you, Magali.
11:38Ugh.
11:38These are horrible.
11:45They're the worst things ever.
11:47Look how they stick to you, the body.
11:54They stick to her body.
11:56And they stick to my clothes.
11:59Okay.
11:59She's lying down there.
12:01Taking another rest.
12:04Oh, another spiderweb.
12:06Oh, it's nice here.
12:08Nice and cool.
12:11Ugh.
12:12Can I join you?
12:13Okay.
12:15Okay.
12:16Let me just take those things off you.
12:32Yeah, my thoughts, as you all very well know, I think the keeping of these beautiful animals
12:39in captivity is a shame.
12:42I think very few lions in captivity around the world get to live the lives of Meg and the
12:52other inhabitants here at the sanctuary.
12:55I will emphasize that my relationships with the lions is not a model that should be reproduced.
13:04It simply is a model that worked for me throughout my career, throughout the past 28 odd years.
13:14And my mandate really, as most of you will know, is to, you know, see these guys, see that
13:21these guys live a good life till the day they pass, Meg 23, not much time left.
13:27And many of the others we, we've said, had to say goodbye to in the past two, three years.
13:33And this year, sadly, guys, we're probably going to have to say goodbye to a few more of our furry
13:39friends.
13:40But as I've said in many videos before, for me, this is a bittersweet moment because, yeah,
13:48it's the end of this captivity and it's almost like a liberation in another sense.
13:58Obviously, the bitter side is the fact that we've got such good, you know, fond memories
14:05and relationships with lions like Meg and she will be sorely missed.
14:13But, yeah, there's a there's that part of me that's looking forward to the new chapter and the new chapter
14:20being focusing on the wild populations,
14:23focusing on Denneking and its expansion.
14:27And I think that's where our efforts should be placed, guys, not in keeping lions in captivity forever and a
14:34day.
14:35And that includes sanctuaries. And I know many sanctuaries get upset by me saying this, but, you know,
14:41if we're not populating sanctuaries with rescue lions from around the world and those inhabitants subsequently die out,
14:50then ultimately we won't be keeping lions in captivity and not just lions.
14:55We should be rethinking the way we keep all animals, all wild animals in captivity.
15:02I'm far more excited about being able to contribute to lions and their populations in the wild.
15:11I think that's an exciting project to be involved with.
15:16So, yeah.
15:22So, guys, it's been a hell of a long time since I've actually just had a bit of a siesta
15:30with Meg in the middle of the bush.
15:34And she's just plunked herself down.
15:38She's quite tired from the walk thus far.
15:44And she's just recharging the batteries a bit, I suppose.
15:49She's cat down, I suppose.
15:52If that's the way you want to look at it, hey?
15:56I suppose that's one way to put it, cat down, not man down.
16:02But these walks are really, really good for her, but they do take it out of her.
16:07So, yeah, that's what this is about.
16:10Just chilling.
16:39It's a good girl.
16:43Okay, let's go.
16:45Let's go and catch the uber.
16:48Oh!
17:04Look at that.
17:05My favorite.
17:08Spider with a spider web.
17:10Let's go this way, my girlie.
17:12Ah, my dear.
17:14She went straight through the web of destruction.
17:20It's been an amazing walk, guys.
17:23I'm super, super stoked with Meg.
17:25She is just so incredible.
17:28She never ceases to amaze me.
17:30She continues to impress.
17:32And, yeah.
17:33I hope she enjoyed her walk, too.
17:37What a good girl.
17:40Meggie, Meggie, Meggie.
17:43Meggie, Meggie the best.
17:55Time to go home, really?
17:56There.
17:57Okay, let's get you some food.
18:00Because I know you don't do anything for nothing.
18:03You're like George.
18:05Eh?
18:07Meg, you're like George.
18:09You don't work for nothing.
18:10Who works for nothing?
18:12Eh?
18:16Aye.
18:18Oh, nicely, my girlie.
18:22Wowie.
18:23Wowie.
18:23Yeah.
18:27Wow, yeah.
18:31What a good girl.
18:33And one more.
18:35Good girl.
18:37Yesterday.
18:38Eh?
18:40Eh?
18:41If only all the lions could be like Granny.
18:44Not sure what to say.
18:46Other than this cat is amazing.
18:52She continues to amaze me.
18:57Cats half her age don't have her ability.
19:03Seriously.
19:03Meggie.
19:05Meg is a legend.
19:07Meg is a legend.
19:08Meg is a legend.
19:32I think I'm the proudest.
19:35Honestly, I'm the proudest I've been in like months.
19:40If not years.
19:42This lion has just blown me away today.
19:48Just her willingness to do stuff.
19:53It's just incredible.
19:54Thanks, Georgie.
19:56I hope that the video brings you much joy.
20:00As much joy as it did me and Meg.
20:03And what a way to start the weekend.
20:06I hope your weekend is awesome.
