A couple of gamers who were nervous about their first dance on their wedding day decided to hold a first Mario Kart race as a married couple instead. Huy Nguyen and his wife, Justine, from Dallas, Texas, had childhoods that were tied to a love of video games from an early age. Huy had a baby photo of himself holding a Gameboy Color and playing Pokemon Yellow, before going on to play hits like Mario Kart, League of Legends and Smash Brothers. Justine, meanwhile, fondly remembers playing Mario Kart, Halo and Guitar Hero with her siblings, before seeing gaming become a natural part of her and Huy's relationship. The couple would walk around their college campus playing Pokemon GO, while also using online games to stay connected during the two years their relationship was long-distance. Ahead of their wedding, Huy and Justine wanted an event that reflected them as a couple, and they decided to incorporate a number of gaming-themed elements, including Mario Kart-themed invites, personalized Pokémon cards and a gaming menu. And after Justine and Huy had arrived at their reception on kiddie cars – another homage to Mario Kart – it was time for what would traditionally be a couple's first dance. Instead, Justine and Huy donned headsets, sat on a pair of chairs, and played their first Mario Kart race as a married couple, which Huy went on to win.

00:00I'm a chronic overthinker. How are we going to do the first dance? And just imagining everybody
00:05staring at us, watching us, so we ended up pivoting. Okay, let's just do the first game
00:10instead of the first dance. Growing up, we've always played games in my family. We'd always
00:14play Mario Kart. When I met Hui in college, he had also been playing it, so we would always meet
00:19up in the library and we would play together. During COVID, she started to work out of state
00:25and I still stayed here in Texas. And so we didn't really have any good way to spend time,
00:30obviously, except for traveling. So the best thing that we did and what we both really liked doing
00:35was playing games. Every night, we would always just call each other and just spend time playing games.
00:41That kept our relationship. We didn't originally want to do the big wedding. It was a little bit
00:46daunting for the two of us, so as a way to encourage ourselves, we decided to incorporate things that
00:52we enjoyed. So we kind of went with gaming. Me and Hui had like makeshift headphones that Allison,
01:08our wedding coordinator, she got some cheap headphones and she attached like a bridal veil
01:13to mine and then Hui's was black. All I could hear was like everyone screaming and cheering.
01:23I didn't take it too seriously when we went into it. Of course, like Hui wants to win
01:27and I want to win. I know Hui did try to let me win. If you've watched the videos, it
01:32is obvious that
01:33he's not driving. He's trying to drive off the course. I was driving as if I was drunk.
01:41Have fun with it. Don't take it too serious. It's meant to be fun.
01:45I think we'll be doing this for a long time. Yeah.
01:47We're actually planning to attend a gaming convention next week. Yeah.
