Los Angeles Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh was clearly frustrated after his team’s preseason loss to the San Francisco 49ers, but one play stood out more than the final result.

During the game, 49ers returner Jacob Cowing broke free for an 83-yard punt return. Chargers punter JK Scott had a chance to make a tackle but appeared to pull out of the play instead of attempting to stop Cowing.

The effort—or lack of it—did not sit well with Harbaugh. When asked whether Scott had been instructed to avoid tackles to protect himself from injury, Harbaugh made his expectations clear: “No, he’s got to plan, when he’s in that position, to make a tackle.” He added, “So, we need to work on it, coach it up.”

Harbaugh also criticized the punt itself, saying, “The punt was short and in the middle and we got outflanked.”

Scott finished last season among the NFL’s top punters by average, but this play has now put his tackling effort under the spotlight.
