00:08The Justice Department says TikTok and its parent company, ByteDance, violated federal children's privacy laws by allowing kids under 13

00:18collecting their personal information without proper parental consent, and sometimes failing to delete those accounts when parents asked.
00:26The lawsuit was filed in 2024, following an earlier 2019 case involving TikTok's predecessor, Musical.ly.
00:34But here's where things took a turn. TikTok has now agreed to a $400 million settlement.
00:41The company will pay $300 million immediately, with another $100 million tied to the removal of the previous Musical.ly
00:49consent decree.
00:49The Justice Department says TikTok has since made changes to its privacy practices, age controls, and parental safeguards.
00:58Importantly, the settlement does not mean TikTok was found liable.
