00:05Hello my friends and welcome to another beautiful day here in Greece and I've
00:14come down this morning to one of the canals near the lake to try and film
00:20and photograph one of my favorite favorite little birds apart from the
00:25fact that they're absolutely stunning little birds they're amazing engineers
00:31architects craftsmen just phenomenal little birds and it's of course the
00:37Penduline Tet and they build these beautiful hanging basket pear-shaped
00:43hanging basket type nests over water usually on a hanging branch on a low down
00:50branch I can just hear him calling a second ago microphone hopefully picked
00:57him up as well he's gone silent for a second he's not on the nest at the
01:07moment so yeah as I was saying they they built these beautiful hanging basket
01:12nests which they make out of oh there he is he's just on the branch next to the
01:20nest you just start filming and he's just on the nest now and gone in
01:49that's him calling
01:57which is quite a bit of wind
02:06so they build these beautiful nests hanging nests which they weave out of
02:14grasses seed pods although I think the seed pods they use mostly as decoration and
02:23spider silk which is the glue that holds it all together absolutely stunning little
02:32creatures
02:51so the wind is blowing the nest all over the place

03:03like I said this is the busiest times for them building these little nests of
03:09theirs and what he'll do the male will build three or four of them and then he'll
03:15try and attract a female to them and she will then come along and either approve or
03:22disapprove and and then if she approves she'll set about making it her own as
03:28well and making it comfortable and so she'll go and get one of the favorite
03:32things is of the white poplars they produce this fluffy seed this time of
03:37year and they use that as as bedding to make the nest nice and soft and warm for
03:47their for their eggs and their little ones
03:54so he's inside at the moment doing some maintenance so the nest is not quite
04:01complete at the moment so that hole that you'll see they'll make it into a
04:07little tube through which they'll enter with a hatch that'll open and close
04:13eventually and it'll sort of seal shut with the spider's silk
04:26okay whilst he's in there and I'm filming

05:08and photograph at the same time so it's just a beautiful shot at the moment of him
05:19making some adjustments to the entrance
05:28just poking his head out occasionally and then fixing up the entrance

05:43sometimes it's hard to tell them apart when they're inside

06:28I got it on film because I was recording
06:33but I didn't manage to get a shot of it as the partner came in
06:37I think it was the male that flew in
06:40handed over some nesting material and then flew off again I think I wasn't
06:45watching at the time I want to get as close as I possibly can but one of the
06:58issues is that the wind keeps moving the nest so I'm shooting this
07:08at a semi slow speed at 50 frames per second and I might try on one of the
07:15wider shots to try and get as slow motion as possible of either one of them
07:23flying in or flying off and do that at a hundred frames per second
07:38so the mail just flew back
07:59okay I'll be back with you in a second let me try and get a few more clips to
08:08help put the sequence together what I'm going to try and do as well is get a
08:12shot of the either one of them male or female actually off the nest somewhere
08:19gathering nesting material and then flying off back to the nest so that I can use
08:26that as a cutaway on this sequence and then it'll be a more rounded complete
08:31sequence so you'll have the birds on the nest flying off the nest gathering
08:36something bringing it back and then arriving on the nest and then utilizing it on the nest
08:43and that may be the main story
08:46so let me get all of those shots and I'll be back with you in a minute
08:51okay so they've both gone from the nest just now off foraging and I think I have
09:00enough footage but I will stay for just that little bit longer just to make sure
09:05tight shots are proving to be the most challenging because every time I go in
09:11tight and make a nice composition wind comes along and blows the nest out of frame
09:18so getting any kind of continuity on that will be a bit of a challenge which is why
09:25I'm going to hang around that little bit longer just to make sure I the tight shots
09:31are are good and I'll wander off a little bit down the canal here where they're
09:36flying off to to see if I can find the spot where they're foraging for all the
09:41nesting material and get a shot of that so I have that as the cutaway that's the
09:47other difficulty is that the Sun keeps coming in and out and messing with the
09:52exposure as well so yeah I'm I'll show you also the stills that I've been
09:58managing to get I think there's a few nice ones there of the female poking her head
10:04out and doing various things on the nest and then the male coming in as well and
10:08giving her some nesting material so hold on to the end for those as well I'll show
10:13you the the film sequence first and then the stills after or skip forward for
