00:00Well, I read so much about just your your background of really, I mean, of course, golf was something that
00:06you played, but it seems like you love playing so many other sports growing up, Bob.
00:11And in the one that is definitely I was talking to Sepp Strach on the range yesterday.
00:16I was like, hey, we're getting Bob on the show.
00:18He's like, was like, what should I ask you about?
00:20Like, this guy loves Shinty.
00:21I was like, what is Shinty?
00:22And so I immediately went home, Googled Shinty and started watching just some film.
00:27And then I started going on Google, as we can see on here.
00:31Charlie's pulled up a picture of you.
00:32It looks like, I mean, throw on your golf golf stuff, man.
00:36This is exactly what your golf swing looks like, man.
00:38There's there seems to be some translation of how you swing.
00:41It looks very field hockey ish.
00:43Is that is that safe to say?
00:44Just like, is it basically that's what it is?
00:48If people ask me what it I'd say, it's field hockey with no rules.
00:52Oh, I love that.
00:53Is there not even a ref?
00:55You call your own fouls.
00:56There's a referee, but I mean, it's full swing, full contact.
01:04Yeah, it's just, it's a Highland sport in the west and north of Scotland.
01:11Yeah, I absolutely love it.
01:13What's the ball like?
01:14Is it really like dense?
01:16Like, is it something that you have to hit hard?
01:18Like, is it something that you can kind of control?
01:21Yeah, you can control it.
01:22Have you ever seen a hurley ball, a hurling ball that Shane plays?
01:27I'm familiar with like a lacrosse ball.
01:29Have you seen those lacrosse balls?
01:31So it's like, it's like, it's like, uh, because I've looked at the size of it, but I just
01:39couldn't feel, you know, if it was super heavy, I feel like that wouldn't be something.
01:42No, no, it's reasonably light.
01:43So yeah, a goalkeeper, a goalkeeper could hit it.
01:46Like you do like, yeah, like a Lottie Davis taking a big divot, tee the ball up.
01:52And then the goalkeeper will hit it probably about, I want to say about 90 yards, 80,
01:5890 yards.
01:58So it's reasonably light.
01:59Oh, man.
02:01Yeah.
02:01So it's reasonably light.
02:0280, 90 yards?
02:03Yeah.
02:03Reasonably light.
02:04Holy moly.
02:05Um, and it's got cork around it.
02:08Okay.
02:09Um, I remember going into the physio track quite a few times and, cause I still, I still play
02:16it from time to time.
02:17And, um, how often do you play the shirt?
02:20I've played a few times.
02:22I love that so much.
02:23I love it.
02:24But you come off and you're just battered and bruised.
02:27You're just, uh, it's probably not the smartest thing, but.
02:31What hurts worse?
02:32Is it, is it, you know, potentially going for a ball and, and, you know, just, uh, you
02:37know, one of those tackle situations or inadvertently getting hit by one of these, is it called a
02:42shinty ball?
02:43What is it called?
02:44Yeah.
02:44So is it getting hit by a shinty ball?
02:46Probably wouldn't feel very good.
02:47Would it?
02:48No, I mean, getting hit by the stick would feel worse.
02:51Oh, the stick is the word.
02:52Okay.
02:52But you've, you've obviously got, you can, you've got the stick there to defend yourself
02:57as well.
02:57Like block or click or whatever.
03:00Um, but no, when you're, when you're defending and someone's taking a shot at goal and you're
03:05trying to get in the way of it and it hits you in some places, it's not good.
03:11Um, but yeah, it just leaves a massive, massive bruise.
03:15It stings for a wee second on most areas and then, you know, you go chasing it again.
03:19All right.
03:20So what, what position would you play in shinty?
03:23I imagine you'd be somebody who'd be a forward, uh, to where he's going to be a goal scorer.
03:26Is that kind of not anymore?
03:28Um, I used to be growing up.
03:30I used to be decent when I was, when I was young.
03:32Um, but then I kind of lost my bit of speed.
03:39Uh, now they start calling you Bobby Mac and cheese on the pitch, huh?
03:45Yeah.
03:46So I used to be, I used to be kind of middle of the park more to the forward line,
03:50but now,
03:52um, yeah, I'm probably more a defender.
03:54Just try and stop people the best I can.
03:57Yeah.
03:58Taking them down and yeah, it just, what do you like to play?
04:02Like if it was your preference and I'd be, I'd be up front, middle of the park.
04:07I'd be middle of the park probably if I've had a choice and I was every now and again,
04:11I'll play middle of the park, but after 90 minutes, I can't walk.
04:16All right.
04:17So you, you wear a helmet, so you're protecting your eyes here.
04:19Uh, are you wearing any hand?
04:21So is that kind of just protecting, like, is that a follow through thing?
04:25Uh, it's more like, so if someone's, if someone's,
04:27someone's taking a full swing, like a golf swing at you and you're standing,
04:32you hooked that one right there, man.
04:33You flipped it and you're, and you're standing kind of right on line with a target.
04:39Yeah.
04:39You go in, you'll, the closer you are to the, to the swing, to the body, the less so it'll
04:46be.
04:47So if someone's swinging a stick or someone's swinging a golf club at a hundred mile an
04:51hour and you're going to get hit by one part of that, you want to be hit by the hands.
04:55Yeah.
04:56So you got to get in as close as you can, so that you use your stick to kind of
04:59block
04:59the, block their stick.
05:02It's like stick on stick collision, but then you're in close and it just, yeah, that's kind
05:08of, if you're out of reach, the reason I wear the glove is because if you're out of reach,
05:12you can run right up the, right up your stick and smash your hands.
05:15And that's why I would only, I would only do it with that one, one hand.
05:19And that's why I would only do it with that one, one hand.
