00:31Welcome, welcome to the Countdown studio on the last of our quarterfinal days, my word, all to play for for
00:38our contestants here today. And in a week, a week today, it'll be Christmas Eve. Now, if you're organised, great,
00:44well done. If you're not, is it anything worse than charging up and down the supermarket aisle, trying to find
00:49things at the very last minute to find that they've sold out? Oh, dear.
00:52And I wonder what sort of Christmas meal you're going to have, what sort of Christmas lunch or dinner. Will
00:58it be the traditional turkey or perhaps goose, as they used to have in the old days, or perhaps a
01:04duck or game, pheasant, perhaps? Not a nut cutlet, please.
01:10Not a vegetarian option, I would have thought. In our house, I have nothing to do with it. The only
01:16thing that I'm instructed to do is to make sure you've got a sharp knife to cut the, to carve
01:21the turkey.
01:22And in our house, that is really something difficult to find because all the knives are chucked in one drawer.
01:27And apparently, old wives tell me that the way to, to blunt a knife is to put all of the
01:33knives in one drawer.
01:34And so we have a number of knife sharpeners, some of which you add water to. Anyway, that's my task.
01:40Make sure I've got a sharp knife and carve the turkey.
01:43How about you? Have you got a big Christmas lunch organised? What are you having, a turkey?
01:49I stopped eating meat in January, so I was expecting this to be my first year of nut cutlets. But
01:54halfway through strictly, I had one day when I had a steak. And that's not very vegetarian, so I think
02:01that's gone out the window.
02:03So we're back as a meat eater, are we? A carnivore? Yeah. Yeah, why not? I feel better for it.
02:08I think so. Imagine a nut roast. Good heavens. Now, who have we got with us here? We've got Bradley
02:12Case back with us. Well done.
02:14Hereafter becoming an Octo-Champ, a student from Southport. And you're joined by Alex Fish, who earned his place in
02:21the quarterfinals after becoming an Octo-Champ 2, with a total score of 798, an accountant from London.
02:28Well done, both of you. This could be a tough test because I think you're very evenly matched. So let's
02:33have a big round of applause for these two warriors, Bradley and Alex.
02:40Very good. And of course, Susie in the corner, Dr. Susie Dent, as ever, a pillar of this Countdown studio.
02:49And she's joined again by Richard Maidley, not only a journalist, TV presenter, but now an author.
02:55And I think I'm right in saying that your wonderful Richard and Judy Book Club, the Winter Spring Selection, will
03:03be in the shop soon, I think, a couple of weeks' time.
03:05Yeah, first week of January. Just look for our silly faces, so they'll be in big cardboard cutouts and all
03:10the new books will be underneath that.
03:11Excellent. And it's a really good collection. It's a collection of eight and they're great stories, great novels.
03:15Well done. Thank you, Richard. More from you later, but now it's time to do battle. Bradley, a letters game.
03:22Hey, Rachel. Hi, Bradley. Can I have a consonant, please? Thank you. Start the day with P.
03:27And a vowel. A consonant. B. Vowel. O. Consonant. S. Vowel. U. Consonant. G. Consonant. T.
03:53And a final consonant, please. And a final D. And here's the countdown clock.
04:30Yes, Bradley? Six. A six. And Alex? Five. A five. And that five would be? Boast. Boast. And Bradley? Doubts.
04:40Doubts. Thank you. Happy? Very happy. What else have we got there, Richard? Got a six. Adopts. Adopts.
04:46Very good. Anything else? Good enough. All right. Bradley's off to an early lead there. Six points. Well done.
04:53Now, Alex, back to you. A letters game. Hi, Rachel. Hi, Alex. Can I have a consonant, please?
04:58Thank you. Start with V. And another. R. And another. L. And another. N. And a vowel. E. And another.

05:52Hey, please. Can I share my language?
05:54I have a dialect.쳐öme.
05:56C. め millennia, I'll try to turn.
05:58Yes, Alex.
05:59Eight.
06:00An eight.
06:01Yes, Bradley.
06:02Eight.
06:02Two eight, Alex.
06:04Inverted.
06:05Inverted.
06:06You're both inverted.
06:08Inverted.
06:08We two are suspended upside down.
06:10Yep.
06:10Anything else?
06:11Yeah, we got delivered, but that was a seven.
06:13And reviled.
06:15Reviled.
06:16Oh, dear.
06:17Very good.
06:17Fourteen to eight.
06:18Bradley's still sustaining his lead.
06:20And we turn now to Bradley for the first numbers game of today.
06:26One last week, Rachel.
06:27Thank you, Bradley.
06:28One large and a five small and potentially keeping things straightforward.
06:32We shall see.
06:33The first time in this quarterfinal, the numbers are three, eight, ten, one, seven, and the large one, 50.
06:41And the first target to reach, 105.
06:44105.
06:44And the second target to reach, but you can see, the first target to reach, and the number two, 154.
06:46And the number two, 155.
06:55And the number three, 155.
07:15Bradley.
07:16105.
07:17Thank you, Alex.
07:18105.
07:19All right.
07:20So, Bradley.

07:2310 minus 8, yep, 2.
07:24Times 50 is 100.
07:26100.
07:27Then 7 minus 3 plus 1 is 5.
07:29Yep.
07:30Add on.
07:31105.
07:31Thank you, Alex.
07:33Same thing.
07:34Same way.
07:35Well done.
07:36No great mysteries there.
07:38Well done.
07:41And 24 plays 18 as we go into a tea time teaser, which is Limo Hall.
07:48And the clue, there's only one U in the answer, but lots of U's help to make it.
07:54There's only one U in the answer, but lots of U's help to make it.
08:14Welcome back.
08:15Welcome back.
08:16There's only one U in the answer, this is the clue, but lots of U's help to make it.
08:22And the answer, of course, is wonderful halloumi.
08:26But where does the word halloumi come from?
08:28Delicious.
08:29Well, it's a cheese, as you'll know, Nick.
08:31It's a Cypriot cheese, very mild, made from goats or ewes milk.
08:34And the word comes from Arabic, meaning to be mild.
08:38So it's pretty salty, but very, very nice.
08:40Very good.
08:41Lovely stuff.
08:41Yep.
08:4224 points to 18.
08:43Bradley in the lead.

11:39Well done.
11:40Building up the score here.

11:42But in the corner, what news?
11:44We had the same hearings and I had sharing
11:46and thanks to the E that you dropped in, we had sharing.
11:48Very good.
11:49All right.
11:50Very good.
11:50Now, we're back to the numbers.
11:52Alex, the accountant.
11:54Your go.
11:56Three large, please.
11:57You can.
11:58Something slightly different.
11:59Three large and three little ones.
12:01And for this round, the little numbers are five, two and six
12:05and the large three, 100, 25 and 50.
12:10Hopefully, something a little bit trickier than the last.
12:12Maybe not.
12:14525.
12:15Five to five.
12:47Now then, Alex.
12:48525.
12:49I think so.
12:50And Bradley.
12:51525.
12:51I'd be surprised if you haven't got that.
12:53Alex.
12:555 times 100.
12:56Don't think we even need to check, do we?
12:57Yes.
12:58525.
12:58Quite a few ways for this one.
12:59All right.
13:00Let's not waste time.
13:01Very good.
13:0150 plays.
13:0236.
13:03But now, we turn to our guest in Dictionary Corner, Richard.
13:07Richard.
13:08You're a fit-looking guy.
13:09A lot younger than me, but, you know, not a kid anymore.
13:12No.
13:13No.
13:13And you turned your nose up as you came into the studio outside when you saw somebody smoking.
13:19That's not something you've ever done, I'm sure.
13:20Oh, that would have been an unconscious reflex.
13:23No, I used to smoke like a chimney.
13:24And it killed my dad.
13:25He died of it.
13:2649.
13:27But I carried on smoking stupidly.
13:29And it is stupid to smoke.
13:30We all know what the side effects can be.
13:32But what very few people talk about is that smoking can make a liar of you.
13:36A stupid, ridiculous, absurd liar.
13:38I gave up, in inverted commas.
13:40In fact, I was a secret smoker.
13:42And I kept it a secret from my wife and from my children and my friends.
13:44I used to go to the garden shed and have a drag or two.
13:47It's stupid.
13:47And one day, we were going out to a Sunday afternoon to the barbecue at Friends.
13:51And Judy went upstairs to the bathroom to put a face on.
13:52I thought, time for a secret fag.
13:54But I didn't go to the shed.
13:55I went out into the drive at the side of the house and lit up there.
13:58Nice drag.
13:59Lovely sunny day.
13:59Suddenly, the bathroom window opened.
14:01Judy's head popped out.
14:02And there am I, absolutely red-handed, having a drag.
14:05And she said, you?
14:06I knew you were smoking.
14:07And she disappeared from the window.
14:08I could hear her coming down the stairs.
14:10So I throw the cigarette away.
14:12Get rid of all the smoke.
14:13She appears at the kitchen doorway and says, I knew it.
14:15I knew you were smoking.
14:16You've been a secret smoker.
14:17Now, this is how bad the lying thing gets when you're addicted to tobacco.
14:21I said, what are you talking about?
14:23With smoke still coming out of an hospital.
14:25And she said, what do you mean?
14:26What am I talking about?
14:27At which point, a treacherous gust of wind blew the cigarette that I'd thrown up the drive.
14:31And it literally skipped down like a ghost, like a phantom, and danced around my feet,
14:34all red ash and smoke.
14:36It was utterly humiliating.
14:37And it was actually the moment that I knew I had a problem.
14:40It's quite a real problem.
14:41More than one problem.
14:42More than one problem, yes.
14:43The horse loomed.
14:44But then you packed it in?
14:46I packed it in when we interviewed John Diamond, who was Nigella Lawson's then husband, and he was dying.
14:51And we interviewed him, and he could barely talk clearly because he'd had part of his mouth removed.
14:55And I remember looking at him and thinking, Maidly, you're an idiot.
14:58This is what...
14:58Because he had it because of smoking.
15:00And I went to my little secret stash, and I flushed them down the toilet, and I never smoked again.
15:04Well, good for you.
15:05Because it's not easy to do, you know.
15:06Very hard.
15:06I was a smoker for many, many, many years.
15:09They used to sell them in the tuck shop at school.
15:13Same here.
15:13You could buy them in the school.
15:14That's right.
15:15You could get them from the tuck shop, yeah.
15:16Unbelievable.
15:16And I smoked for years and years and years, and I thought, this is...
15:19I went to the doctor.
15:20They gave me a pill.
15:22It was a box pill, actually.
15:23Yeah.
15:23And I took two, and I've never smoked since.
15:26And I've never wanted one.
15:27It doesn't bother me.
15:28I know how difficult it is.
15:29And it's a mugs game, Richard.
15:30It's a mugs game, but the great thing to anyone who tries to stop, here's the big deal about it.
15:34You lose the fear.
15:35You stop waking up every morning.
15:36I'm thinking, is this the day I get the pain in the chest?
15:39Is this the day that I get the cough?
15:40You know, you lose that fear once you've stopped.
15:42It's great.
15:42Yeah.
15:43But also, it's undignified to be lurking outside office buildings.
15:46Absolutely.
15:47Having a smoke in the rain, isn't it?
15:49Yeah, it is.
15:49No way to live.
15:50No way to live.
15:51Thank you, Richard.
15:52Look at us.
15:52Both healthy chaps now.
15:54Well done.
15:57Very good.
15:5850 points to Alex's 36.
16:00We turn to Bradley.
16:02You're back on with the letters game.

18:40Tactful. Tactful. What a brilliant spot. That was absolutely fantastic. Yeah, well done. Well done.
18:50Yeah, it puts you well back in contention there. Only seven points behind. But in the corner,
18:55Richard. No, we've got stuck on five too. We have float. Float. Float. Yeah.
18:58All right. So 57-2. Alex is 50. As we turn to a numbers game. And that one is Bradley's.
19:06Bradley.
19:06One large, please, Rachel. Thank you, Bradley. One large, five small. And third time lucky for something
19:11a bit more interesting. Right. These numbers are two. Another two. Three. Ten. One.

20:13Well done.
20:13Thank you, Alex.
20:14I did 2 add 2 is 4.
20:16100 over the 4 is 25 and times it by 10.
20:20Yeah, perfect.
20:21Very easy, this one.
20:22Very good.

20:45APPLAUSE
20:56Welcome back.
20:57I left you with the clue makes the sweet-smelling substances very irate.
21:02And the answer, of course, is incenses.
21:05Incenses.
21:06Now then, 67 to 60.
21:07Bradley just 7 points ahead as we turn to Alex for a letters game.

22:28I'm pretty sure that would be OK.
22:29Somebody who entices you can be an enticer.
22:32Yeah, very good.
22:34Great.

24:00Unperson.
24:02Hmm.
24:03Unperson.
24:03Yeah.
24:04You look pretty confident about this, Bradley.
24:06So you probably know better than me.
24:10Fantastic.
24:11And unperson is a person whose name or existence is denied or ignored,
24:15especially because of a political misdemeanour.
24:18Oh, really?
24:20Really.
24:21It's a non-person.
24:23So Trotsky.
24:24Trotsky was a non-person.
24:25Yeah, Stalin is non-person.
24:27Yeah, yeah.
24:27They painted him out.
24:28Remember that famous photograph?
24:30He's in it one minute and then they paint it.
24:32It's sort of a hole in the picture.
24:34Such rotters.
24:35Anything else, Richard?
24:35Yeah, we got three sevens, but we got an eight.
24:37Neutrons.
24:38Yep.
24:39Very good.
24:40Very good.
24:41All right.
24:4183 plays.
24:4268.
24:4268.
24:43And now, Susie is going to unwrap her little pre-Christmas present for us by way of her
24:49origins of words.
24:51Yes, Susie.
24:51I mentioned yesterday I was reading a great book by Paul Jones who looks at themes within
24:57English and sort of hidden stories in English which contain things that we never knew.
25:01And one of them is human body parts.
25:04So parts of the body, believe it or not, are hidden behind quite a lot of the words we
25:07use every day.
25:08I've talked about hysteria before, which is all to do with the womb.
25:12It comes from the Greek for the womb because only women were thought to have hysteria because
25:17it was all to do with our hormones and our womb, which seems a bit mean.
25:22And there's also things like supercilious, which is all to do with the eyebrow, the supercil in
25:28Latin because you're supposed to have a haughty eyebrow if you're feeling slightly disdainful.
25:34Or supercilious.
25:35But accolade is another nice one.
25:36That's all to do with the neck.
25:38It goes back to the Latin column, which of course gave us collar as well.
25:42And that was because in the bestowal of a knighthood, rather than having the sword touch
25:47the shoulder or perhaps an addition to it, people would also be embraced.
25:51So arms would go around the neck.
25:52And from that we get the idea of a tribute or an accolade.
25:57Gargoyle goes back to the 14th century.
25:59And that comes from an old French term literally meaning throat because the water in a gargoyle
26:04was supposed to come from that hideous face's throat.
26:08Genuine, one of my absolute favourites, comes from the Latin word for knee because there
26:14was an ancient custom whereby a father would acknowledge his paternity by putting a newborn
26:19baby on his knee.
26:21So genu is the Latin for knee.
26:24And finally, hypochondria, which I don't think you have, Nick.
26:27That goes back from, sorry, that goes back to hypochondrium, which meant beneath the cartilage
26:34because the organs that lie beneath the cartilage of the chest were supposed to be responsible
26:39for that feeling of sickness and ill health.
26:43Bravo.
26:44Great.
26:48Brilliant collection.
26:50That's lovely.
26:50Wonderful.
26:51Thank you, Susie.
26:51Now, 83 to 68 and we turn now to Alex.
26:56Alex for his letters game.
26:58Have a consonant, please.

29:35And in the corner, Richard?
29:37Well, she's come up with phenoms.
29:40Is that something to do with odour?
29:43No, you might think so.
29:44I know exactly where you're coming from.
29:46It's actually short for phenomenon.
29:48It's another American term, so you say, well, a phenom is a person
29:52who's outstandingly talented or admired.
29:54A star.
29:55A phenom.
29:56He's a phenom.
