00:28Hello,
00:29we're going to do a brand new week of countdown and what a week it's going to be.
00:32Two more quarterfinals to come, then the semis.
00:35And of course, on Friday, we have the Grand Series final.
00:38Looking forward to it all.
00:39My last week as well.
00:41So, Rachel, we're going to have a few giggles along the way.
00:44As long as I don't start crying, it will be fine.
00:47No, I promise I won't tell any jokes.
00:48No need to cry.
00:51Yeah, long week it's going to be.
00:52No, it's going to be a fantastic week.
00:54Starting with a fantastic quarterfinal coming up, I think.
00:58Let's meet our contestants.
00:59First of all, Paul Keane, who's the third seed.
01:01He's an accountant from North Finchley in London.
01:04Now, making his debut on the show in November, Paul managed a fantastic eight wins and a total of 744
01:10points.
01:11And he was a bit of a whiz with the conundrums as well, spotted a handful of them in just
01:15one second.
01:17Paul, what were your expectations when you first appeared on the show?
01:20I thought, you know, I could do well, maybe get the teapot.
01:23I was in it for the teapot, but after that, everything's just been a bonus.
01:26So it's been wonderful.
01:27In it for the teapot, but now in it to win it.
01:29Yeah.
01:29OK.
01:30Paul Keane up against Dave Taylor today.
01:33Joining us from Sunderland, Dave's our number six seed.
01:36Dave first joined us at the end of August.
01:39Packed up eight wins.
01:40An impressive total of 691 points.
01:43And Dave, I understand you're fresh from another competition, are you?
01:46Yes, I've just come back from the European Quiz Championships.
01:50Now, I remember you were up there, yes.
01:51How did you do?
01:53Not very well.
01:54No.
01:55Round about the middle.
01:56Oh, well, that's respectable, isn't it?
01:58Yeah.
01:59I hope to do better than this one.
02:00OK.
02:02Dave has a points average of 86.
02:04I've got a feeling that there's going to be some real friendly rivalry here, because
02:08these two prepared for battle today by, well, going out with each other last night, true?
02:14Yeah.
02:14Yes.
02:14A quiet night, though.
02:16They're fighting face our two quarter finalists, Dave Taylor and Paul Keane.
02:27And in Dictionary Corner for this very special week on Countdown, I'm delighted to welcome
02:30alongside Susie Dent, a very talented impressionist and comedian, John Cullshaw.
02:42Yes, I'm in it for the teapot as well.
02:46And, of course, you know, you're joining us with, you know, a brand new series of the
02:50Impressions show well underway by now.
02:52Yes, yes, yes, indeed, indeed.
02:53Some favourite new characters there.
02:55John Bishop, the wonderful comedian from Liverpool.
02:58You'll want to name me favourites like that.
03:02So, yes, and it's wonderful to be back here again at this epic, titanic battle end of
03:07the process.
03:08You are going to be so impressed by the standard, I'll tell you that, John.
03:11So impressed.
03:12Susie, you've got a favourite character of John's?
03:15Oh, yes.
03:15Rachel and I have replayed your Noel Edmonds very often, I have to say.
03:19It is fantastic.
03:21Definitely Noel.
03:22And mine's still Ross Kemp, so we'll have to have a bit of that.
03:24OK, we'll work them all in.
03:25I'll get those in before the end of this episode.
03:29Great stuff.
03:30OK, off we go then.
03:32Paul has won the toss and he has elected to go first, so off you go, Paul.
03:36Hello again, Rachel.
03:37Hi, Paul.
03:38Can I start with the consonant, please?
03:40Start the week with S.
03:42And another one.
03:44T.
03:45And a third one.
03:47N.
03:48A vowel.
03:50A.
03:51Another vowel.
03:52E.
03:53And a third vowel.
03:55O.
03:56A consonant.
03:57L.
03:59Another consonant.
04:01P.
04:02And a final vowel.
04:04And a final A.
04:07And for the first time this week, here's the Countdown Clock.
04:09Our
04:10open
04:10.
04:19.
04:41Dave, how many?
04:43I'll risk an eight.
04:44And Paul?
04:45Eight.
04:46OK, what's yours, Paul?
04:47Polentas.
04:48And yours, Dave?
04:49That's my risk as well.
04:51OK.
04:54Polentas, is that a risk?
04:55It is risky because it says in the dictionary it's a maths noun,
04:58but there is a loophole in Countdown,
05:01which is if you are talking about plates of food, for example,
05:05and you're ordering them in a restaurant, you can pluralise it,
05:07so you would have a couple of beers and a couple of polentas, maybe.
05:10Bit of an oddness.
05:11I always do that.
05:12Whenever I have a beer, I always have a polenta with it as well.
05:14OK, but I'm going to allow it, so it's fine.
05:17The polentas are valid.
05:18Which is good.
05:19There's another eight, actually, which is pleasant.
05:22It's also there for eight, which is very good.
05:24Planets as well.
05:25For Sir Patrick Moore, planets is there for seven.
05:28Not eight, but still worth mentioning.
05:31Excellent.
05:33Great start then for Paul and for Dave, both on the scoreboard,
05:36with polentas, eight points apiece for them.
05:38Dave, it's your pick.
05:39Hi, Rachel.
05:40Hi, Dave.

07:02Yes, nice for openers, yeah, very good.
07:05What have we got over there, John and Susie?
07:06A couple more sevens, which Susie discovered after about three seconds.
07:12Unreals is another one for seven.
07:14Double E, yeah.
07:16As is Elopers.
07:17So a good bunch of sevens.
07:19Yes.
07:20In that crop of letters there.
07:21Good bunch of sevens indeed, one of which was spotted by Paul.
07:24He's moved on to 15.
07:26Dave has eight.
07:28Paul, your pick this time.

08:37Seven.
08:38OK, Dave, what's the six?
08:39Movies.
08:40And the seven, Paul?
08:42Devious.
08:43Well spotted, Paul, yes.
08:44Excellent.
08:45Yes, very well spotted indeed, because I'm not sure there's too much more,
08:49is there, John?
08:50No, a couple of nice sixes videos there for six and moshed,
08:54which I was rather fond of for another six.
08:56Moshed.
08:57Moshed.
08:57OK.
08:59Dave, you to choose.
09:00Could I have a consonant, please?

09:36And a consonant?
09:38And a consonant?
09:42And a consonant?
09:57And a consonant?
10:07Paul, how many this time?
10:09Seven.
10:10Dave?
10:10Probably the same seven.
10:12OK. What's your seven, Dave?
10:13My great.
10:14Is it the same one?
10:15Right, it is the same one.
10:16Yep.
10:17Very good.
10:19My great, great for seven, then.
10:21Any alternatives over there, John, Stevie?
10:23There is a wonderful one here that Susie found.
10:26Vergate.
10:27Yes.
10:27For seven.
10:28Which is a historical term for a varying measure of land,
10:31typically 30 acres in the olden days.
10:36Paul's got 29 and Dave has 15.
10:38Time to move on to our first numbers round of the contest now.
10:41And, Paul, is you to pick those numbers, please?
10:42All right, can I get two large and four small, please, Rachel?
10:45You can, thank you, Paul.
10:46Two large and four small for the first numbers game of this quarterfinal.
10:50And this time they are four, two, ten and six.
10:56And the two large one, 75 and 50.
10:59And the target, 495.
11:0230 seconds to reach, yes.
11:25Looking for 495 in this first numbers contest of this quarterfinal.
11:30Dave, how close?
11:32495.
11:33And Paul?
11:33It's 496.
11:35Right, OK.
11:36Dave, let's hear your 495, then, please.
11:37Round the houses again, Rachel.
11:40Here we go.
11:4010 over 2 equals 5.
11:4210 over 2 equals 5.
11:4450 minus 5.
11:4650 minus 5 equals 45.
11:496 times 75?
11:526 times, yeah, 75 is 450.
11:56And add the pair together.
11:57Brilliant.
11:57Well done.
12:04That was an interesting route, wasn't it?
12:06But, well done, Dave.
12:08495.
12:09And the gap has decreased.
12:12Paul on 29.
12:13Dave just four points behind now on 25.
12:16A little breather for them, because the impressionist and comedian John Culshaw is making a welcome return visit to Countdown
12:23this week.
12:24Looking forward to hearing some of the impressions during the course of the week, John.
12:27Yes, of course.
12:27Noel Edmonds we had to work in.
12:29A quarter of a million pounds.
12:3022 identical sealed boxes.
12:33I'm on next.
12:34Hooray.
12:36Who else?
12:36Ross Kemp we had to work in.
12:38I'm here to investigate the gang, known simply as the Countdown contestants.
12:43He's always great value.
12:44Who else is a favourite new one?
12:46Greg Wallace.
12:47Gotta love Greg Wallace from MasterChef.
12:48You know, have they really got what it takes at this level, at this level, at this level, at this
12:53level.
12:54No one else can generate such intensity over sponge cake.
12:59Who else is there?
13:00You know, a few returning favourites, such as Ian Hislop.
13:03Hmm.
13:03No, it sort of feels quite right to do Ian Hislop sitting behind a panel like that, looking bewildered and
13:10going, bah.
13:12And if you sort of take Ian Hislop and make him slightly posher and talk more quickly, you do, of
13:17course, get Boris Johnson, the illustrious Mayor of London.
13:20And I'm happy to announce that at next year's London Olympic Games, the venue for the Ladies' Beach Volleyball has
13:28now been changed to my back garden.
13:31I look forward to a Brazil-Sweden final.
13:36Does it help that you have such elaborate make-up?
13:39Does that get you more in character?
13:40Yes, I think it does.
13:41It does sort of get you into the character's mind when you just sit there and watch, gradually, all of
13:48their hair and nose and features just sort of being glued onto you.
13:51It does help you to get into the mindset.
13:55Some characters require quite a lot less.
13:58A bit of a surprise character this time.
14:00And I don't know where it came from, but that was Paul McCartney, you know.
14:03I just sort of like the way that, you know, he sort of nods his head when he's speaking.
14:09I think that's really sort of cool, you know, and great.
14:12Yeah, just sort of like, you know, put it into a song and that, you know.
14:17You know, I've got to respect, you know, Alan Hawkshaw and the Countdown theme, what he wrote, you know.
14:21And I've been wanting to sort of make my own version of that for quite a few years, so maybe
14:26now's the time to get around to it.
14:29LAUGHTER
14:31APPLAUSE
14:36Lovely. Much more of John during the course of the week.
14:39Paul has 29, then Dave has 25.
14:41Here's your first.
14:42Pastor, it's all because of this.
14:49APPLAUSE
14:55If you fancy some pastor, it's all because of this.
14:58Apostat is the answer to our first teaser of the week.
15:01And I can see what a blank looks out there.
15:03So, Susie, what's apostat?
15:05Well, it's a good one to slip into conversation, this.
15:07It's a blend of appetite and thermostat.
15:10And it's the region of the brain which is believed to control a person's appetite for food.
15:15Hmm.
15:15OK.
15:16I'll try and slip that into conversation sometime.
15:19LAUGHTER
15:21Dave Taylor and Paul Keane contesting our third quarterfinal.
15:25At the moment, Paul with a narrow advantage.
15:26He's got 29.

18:40Well, there's a seven in the form of elegant.

18:46But no more longer words than that.
18:48Elegant would have been excellent for seven.
18:50But as it is, good solid sixes for Paul and for Dave.
18:52The gap remains 10 points with Paul on 41 and Dave on 31.

22:07Yeah, there's another seven, Sulkier is there,
22:11making use of that I-E-R again, Sulkier.
22:13And also another seven, which means the sound of bagpipes.
22:17What was this word?
22:18Yes, bagpipes, and they make a shrill sound.
22:21Skurl.
22:21So skurled is there for another seven.
22:23Very good.
22:25A few sevens around then.
22:26Duskier, a lovely word.
22:27Spotted by Paul.
22:28He moves on to 54.
22:30Dave on 37.
22:32A short break for them, because we're back off to Dictionary Corner.
22:35It's Origins of Words time for the first time this week.
22:37Susie, what's the debate?
22:39Well, I thought about making words all about goodbye this week,
22:41and I decided it would all be too sad.
22:43So I've decided to be festive and concentrate on Christmas words.
22:47And I'm going to start with panto and where that comes from.
22:50And it all goes back to classical Greece.
22:53And a pantomime was actually an actor who represented myths and legends
22:57through gestures and actions.
22:59So he did actually mime.
23:00And that's where that one comes from.
23:02Yule, these days, is just another word for Christmas.
23:06But actually, it came over with the Vikings as a pagan festival at the winter solstice,
23:10and it lasted 12 days, just as 12 days of Christmas do now.
23:14And it was adopted into Christianity and became simply another term for Christmas.
23:19But there's a lovely Scots dish, at least they used to be, called Yule Brose,
23:22which was a kind of porridge made from oats on which was poured the juices of boiled meat.
23:27I say it was lovely because there's a nice little story attached.
23:30The tradition was to put a ring in this communal bowl of Yule Brose,
23:35and the person who got it in their spoon was taken to be the member of the company to be
23:39first married.
23:40I like that one.
23:48I have to be honest, I might give that Yule Brose a bit of a miss
23:50the next time it's served up in the hotel, though.
23:54Paul's got 54 at the moment.
23:55Dave has got 37.
23:56It's our third quarterfinal.
23:58It's a good tussle as well.
