00:30Good afternoon and welcome to Countdown where it's all getting rather exciting.
00:34Today is the first of our series quarterfinals, so over the next week or so you can expect some nail
00:39-biting, jaw-dropping performances.
00:42We've had some absolutely amazing contestants throughout this 65th series of Countdown and now we're down to the cream of
00:48the crop.
00:49Since June, contestants from all walks of life and all corners of Britain and Ireland have been here competing for
00:55the ultimate prize.
00:57And this series, a total of 29 iconic winner's teapots have gone to very good and deserving humps.
01:0629, that's amazing, Rachel.
01:07It is amazing, especially we've had six Octo Champs. It's been a ridiculously good season.
01:12It has been absolutely fantastic. What's more amazing, by the way, is, you know, the teapots that we hand out.
01:18I mean, they are collector's items. Not one, not one has turned up on eBay, which is absolutely great.
01:24Are you an eBay user, by the way? Have you ever bought anything on eBay?
01:26Oh, I buy loads of stuff.
01:27You say, I've never bought anything on eBay before, but I was browsing through it at the weekend.
01:31The one that really caught my eye was a Cessna plane and it was ÂŁ2,300.
01:35I thought, that's a bit of a bargain. I mean, if I bought it, I mean, how do they get
01:38it to you? Do they post it?
01:40That's going to have to come by airmail, wouldn't it?
01:41Pick up only, I think.
01:45Don't you groan at that. That was like, my 12-year-old son, Matthew, he told me that line.
01:51And he's a heck of a lot better than most of mine.
01:55It's true. Cessna for ÂŁ2,300. Amazing.
01:58Anyway, let's press on, shall we, and meet our first quarter finalists.
02:01First of all, David Butcher, who's back with us from Epsom in Surrey.
02:04He made his debut in the programme in October, and after beating his opponent by just six points in his
02:10first game,
02:10he went on to notch up a further six wins.
02:12And I think it's fair to say, David, you surprised yourself.
02:16Absolutely. Yeah.
02:17I, well, it's been documented. I was going home after 15 minutes.
02:21Yeah. You didn't have the best start, did you?
02:23Yeah. Yeah. But it got, well, gradually got better.
02:27Yeah, you showed a lot of resilience. You did brilliantly.
02:29David Butcher is up against Mark Deeks. Mark's a law student from Braffing in Hertfordshire.
02:35First joined us in July when he racked up eight straight victories, an average point score of 103.
02:41Family and friends impressed, were they, Mark?
02:44I hope so.
02:47So they weren't too fulsome with their praise then?
02:51No, they're quite acerbic.
02:53Are they? Oh, right. Your biggest critics?
02:55Other than myself.
02:56Other than yourself. Well, you could silence.
02:59You can't silence them by winning this series, can't you?
03:00Whoa.
03:01Whoa, mate.
03:05Mark says that since appearing on the show, he's been practising and practising.
03:08He's forgotten what life outside Countdown is like.
03:10Me too, Mark.
03:14But with 824 points, he's our number one seed.
03:17And whatever he says, the man to beat.
03:20Please welcome Mark Deeks and David Butcher.
03:28And in Dictionary Corner once again for this first quarterfinal, Susie Denton, David Lloyd.
03:37You've got anything on eBay, David?
03:39I can't think that I have. I'm sure that the household has from time to time.
03:43You can get anything on there.
03:45I wonder how much one of these Countdown teapots would bring.
03:48A lot.
03:49A lot.
03:50Yeah, three figures at least, I would think.
03:52Yeah.
03:53ÂŁ1.80.
03:56But Lloyd, you've been ÂŁ1.80 for everything, regardless of it, aren't you?
03:59I know you.
04:01Let's press on, shall we, then?
04:02And our first round of this first quarterfinal.
04:06And David's won the toss, so David, it's your first pick.
04:09A consonant, please, Rachel.
04:11Thank you, David.

17:41but can you outrule? No, you can't, I'm afraid. Oh, that's very bad luck. Sorry. Regulo's fine,
17:49yes. It's all to do with gas oven temperatures used before a numeral. It was a tough one. Nothing
17:54better than that. Okay. Yeah, very tough indeed. Mark moves on to 41. Unlucky with that one,

23:15an old english
23:16word which meant cold and the full word was cold cottage farm perhaps referring to a drafty dwelling
23:23or one in a very exposed location over time it became corrupted to chalk charing cross the charing
23:29goes back to an old english word for bend probably for a bend in the old roman road from london
23:35at
23:35that point and the cross came from the eleanor cross that was erected here by edward i to commemorate
23:40his first wife elena of castile chelsea probably simply meant a landing place for chalk or limestone
23:47swiss cottage very simply again from the name of a tavern in the locality that resembled a swiss
23:52chalet and finally made of ale was from the local hero of maida inn which itself was inspired by the

27:50Desperate, and the answer is no, sadly.

34:14No, Mark was really good.
34:16I mean, he deserves all the way.
