00:31Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown Studio on International Mountain Day.
00:37A day to celebrate the stunning landforms that are part of our planet and to protect them.
00:42I mean, it's not as though they're sort of running away.
00:44We've just got to be very careful about our mountains.
00:46After all, they provide most of the planets rainwater and apparently one in ten people live on a mountain.
00:53Surprising fact. Surprising fact.
00:55When it comes to mountains, have I visited any mountains?
00:58It's quite difficult to visit a mountain, but the mountain range that I know quite well and love is the
01:05Pyrenean mountain range,
01:06stretching right across from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean.
01:10It's wonderful to drive from France over those wonderful Pyrenees, stopping in Andorra momentarily to buy lots of duty-free
01:18goods
01:19and then plunging down the other side into the Spanish Plain.
01:23I love it. The Pyrenees are glorious, although not very high, mountain range.
01:27Do you have a favourite mountain range or indeed a favourite mountain that you've clambered up?
01:31Well, the only one I've been up is Table Mountain, because you haven't got to clamber it.
01:35You can just get the egg, whatever, like a cable car.
01:38Well, when we went up, the tablecloth was on, so it's just a whole cloud that looks like a tablecloth.
01:42Very extraordinary.
01:43And we couldn't see anything. And then the wind kind of came in and shifted it, and then you can
01:48see all around.
01:48Lovely.
01:49It's a very unique place.
01:51Something for me to look forward to. Thank you, Rachel.
01:53Yeah, not long.
01:53Brilliant.
01:54Now then, Rod Chatfield back again.
01:57Now on four wins, Rod, and I'm going to call you the conundrum master, because you haven't missed one yet.
02:03You've been extraordinary.
02:04And you told me in the break that whenever you watch Canada on television, you get one in ten.
02:09So this is the magic of the studio.
02:11You've certainly turned it on.
02:12Brilliant stuff.
02:13And you're joined by Kevin Westlake, a pensions analyst from Birmingham, member of the Harbourn Cricket Club.
02:19And I believe that one of your most memorable experiences was attending the 78th FA Cup final, Ipswich versus Arsenal.
02:27Why?
02:29As a young lad, I'd been taken to my local team, Ipswich.
02:34I think we managed to get to the final that year in the days when small teams did have a
02:40better chance of doing so.
02:42And we were expected to get absolutely tranced by the Arsenal, but with apologies to all Arsenal fans watching, we
02:50played them off the park, in all honesty, and won 1-0.
02:54Brilliant stuff.
02:55Big round of applause then for Rod and Kevin Westlake.
02:59APPLAUSE
03:03And in the corner, of course, the great Dr Susie Dent, joined once again by Dan Walker, the TV sports
03:09presenter and journalist, somebody who talks.
03:12And I know that I'm going to do this all week, Dan.
03:14Yes.
03:14To 358 million homes a week.
03:18It gets bigger every day, doesn't it, Alan?
03:19I know.
03:20I love it.
03:20I love it.
03:21Well, more and more homes are tuning in to listen to Dan Walker.
03:25But anyway, more of that later, Dan, because right now it's down to work.
03:29Rod, take it away.
03:31Letters game.

04:41I'll also try a seven.
04:43All right, Rod?
04:45Dogstar.
04:46Dogstar, yes, Kevin.
04:48Goagers.
04:49OK, there is no dog star.
04:52Well, there is a dog star, but it's two words.
04:54It's a serious, a star, and they're capitalised, I'm afraid.
04:57I like.
04:58Can you be a goager?
05:00It would make sense that you could be, but you never know.
05:03So, that's not there either, so I have to disallow both of them, I'm afraid.
05:08Oh.
05:08No goager.
05:09It's not a good start.
05:10Not a good start.
05:11Now then, down to you then, Dan.
05:14Well, there are some sevens in there.
05:15Those two have been disallowed, but you could have had storage for seven,
05:19and also roasted is in there for another seven as well.
05:22Roasted.
05:23All right.
05:24Anyway, zero plays zero as we turn to Kevin.

07:07Whispier, as in a beard, perhaps?
07:10Yes.
07:11Yes.
07:11A bit whispier than the other one.
07:12Very not to be whispy.
07:13Six all.

08:39And the clue, he rubs his lips after eating a mouthful of this.
08:44He rubs his lips after eating a mouthful of this.
09:03Welcome back.
09:04I left you with the clue.
09:04He rubs his lips after eating a mouthful of this.
09:08What was he eating?
09:09He was eating belpuri.
09:11Belpuri.
09:12Yeah.
09:13It sounds really tasty.

11:04They've outdone us.
11:05That's it.
11:06Nothing else?
11:07Nothing else.

12:52Our second numbers game of the day.
12:53Kevin?
12:55Could I have one from the top row and five small, please, Rachel?
12:58Thank you, Kevin.
12:58One large, five small, and another close contest.
13:00Let's see if this numbers game will separate you two.
13:03Right.
13:04For this round, they are four, six, two, nine, seven, and 100.
13:10And the target to reach, 281.

13:25And the other source.
13:27And the target to reach, 242.
13:45now then Kevin 281 281 and Rod 279 279 so first shot to Kevin 100 times 2 is 200
13:56yep 100 times 2 200 7 plus 6 and then minus 4 is 9 7 plus 6 minus 4 9
14:05times
14:07the 9 80 81 and add that to the 200 well done that gives you your 10 point lead 40
14:17points to 30 but now we turn to Dan and Dan still a young man but you've got a
14:26lot of broadcasting experience under your belt in the audience we've got 60 or
14:3070 young media students they're from Sheffield as well aren't they yeah from
14:34Sheffield my hometown very good well there we are now come on what tips were you
14:38given that you can now pass on to these young people from your town right well
14:42I'll let you into a little secret of the trade and I used to now work in sport but
14:46I used to work in news as well and one of my jobs used to be to read the sport
14:50as
14:50part of the 10 o'clock news bulletin on the BBC on a Saturday night normally you
14:54know the one where you say match of the day follows this program so if you don't
14:56want to know the scores look away now that one and one of the questions which
15:00I often get asked is when you used to do those bulletins which I don't do anymore
15:04is what do you say or what do you and the newsreader say at the end when you
15:07shuffle your papers and have a little chat to each other and we can never
15:09listen so I remember the first time I ever did this bulletin late night I was
15:14doing it with Hugh Edwards you know the chief the news don if you like so I said
15:18to Hugh before we went on I said mr. Edwards you have to address him like that
15:22mr. Edwards at the end what do I do do I look at you do I what do we say
15:26he said
15:26don't worry I'll take care of you now here is the voice of authority so when he
15:30speaks you listen so I did my sport as part of the news and I turned to Hugh and
15:35said that's all your sport for tonight and as Hugh said Dan thank you very much
15:39thank you to everybody for watching and from everyone at BBC news good night and
15:44then he picked up his papers and I picked up my papers and he looked at me and I
15:47looked at him and he said shall we just sit here and shuffle our papers and pretend
15:51we're talking to each other and that's genuinely what he says at the end of the
15:54news so no no chip chat or anything but all fakery so I thought do you think we could have
15:59a little
15:59go yeah right so get your papers at the ready okay where's our camera there's our
16:02camera okay so and you stay classy countdown thank you for watching and from both of us
16:07good night good night so 10 points in it now then Kevin sprung into a 10 point lead 40 to

17:45Looted.
17:46Looted, Rod.
17:48Extold.
17:48It's just a one L.
17:49I think that's probably the American spelling.
17:54Normally, we would have the double L.
17:59I mean, yeah, the British English has to be double L, Rod.
18:01No, that's what I thought.
18:02Bad luck.
18:02Bad luck.

21:53You've sprung into a respectable lead there, Rod.
21:56So, Kevin, now it's your letters game.

25:08countdown on countdown means that you can pluralize it and the example it gives is daniel's films were
25:13a homage to her which doesn't give a plural really but it does say countdown in the dictionary so i

25:38from ian hall um he said greetings i recently had a plumber round to discuss the new bathroom
25:43he asked what sort of fittings i wanted and being fiscally challenged i said a basic unit
25:48i.e i wanted a bog standard loo and despite the awful pun where does bog standard come from
25:55and it's a really puzzling phrase and there's been lots and lots of suggestions and theories put forward
26:00over time and the most obvious one is that it's got a link with bog in some sense being the
26:05loo and it's
26:06been a british slang term for the loo for a very long time and it's a shortened form of bog
26:11house which
26:12was a latrine or privy um and in the 17th century it was called a bog guard but nobody actually
26:18knows
26:18where um that comes from it's probably not linked to bog in the sort of marshy sense although you can
26:24see the associations i won't really go into that um but uh you can sort of see how negativity might
26:30um fit in and if you call something bog standard it does seem to be slightly sort of basic and
26:34not that
26:35great um that's one theory there's another one that says that bog is an acronym for british or german
26:41on the grounds that british and german manufacturing in victorian times or engineering were absolutely
26:46top dollar um but again there aren't really records to substantiate this and best theory the best one
26:53of all is that it comes from box standard and sir clive sinclair the great entrepreneur who invented the
26:59pocket calculator and almost the personal computer um back in the 1980s said an interview luckily we
27:07cannot foresee the day when a computer becomes just a standard box there will be box standard machines
27:12along the road but we do not simply have to make those so it's very likely that he could have
27:17made it
27:17up on the spur at the moment or he already knew it from the electronics business um as a term
27:21and then
27:21gradually it crept out into wider use so nothing to do with lose despite the fact that ian was ordering
27:27a bog standard well i think i think we can be grateful for that very good clive sinclair very good
