00:23I'll see you next time.
00:31Welcome to the Countdown Studio. Welcome here to the Countdown Studio on semifinals day. Now, has it been hard times
00:38getting here? No. Do we have great expectations from our semifinalists? We most certainly do. What am I talking about?
00:45What the Dickens am I talking about? Well, because way back in 1843, Charles Dickens, his Christmas Carol was published
00:54for the very first time.
00:55And it wasn't so long ago that Selina Scott graced this studio with a first edition of that great, great
01:02book signed by Charles Dickens himself.
01:04And I began to think, which towns and cities do I think of at Christmas time or where would I
01:11like to be?
01:12And I drift to the west of England, really. I drift to Bath, to Cheltenham, to Sirencester, to Marlborough, still
01:19on the world, because I think at Christmas time, those are the most picturesque and beautiful towns and cities.
01:25Do you have a favourite, Rachel?
01:26I think Godalming in Surrey is lovely. There was a terrible Christmas film. Was it that Christmas? The Holiday? Have
01:32you seen that film?
01:33Oh, yeah.
01:33No.
01:33I hated that film, but that was set in Godalming, I think. And it's really pretty around there.
01:37Yeah.
01:38Very old school and lots of independent shops and cobbled streets and snow.
01:42Excellent stuff. Well, there we are. I'm off to sort of Northamptonshire for Christmas and a bit of snow, brisk
01:50walks. I'm looking forward to it.
01:52Looking forward to it, indeed. Now, who have we got with us? We've got Callum Todd, knocked out the record
01:57-breaking Jen Stedman, to earn his place here today in the semi-final, 108 to 105.
02:03And you're up against the terrific Glenn Webb, Callum, qualified for today's semi-final after beating Jonathan New, 107 to
02:1245, financial advisor from Cradley Heath. Is that right?
02:17Cradley Heath.
02:18Cradley Heath. Cradley Heath. You corrected me the last time you were here. Cradley Heath.
02:21Cradley Heath, indeed. Brilliant stuff. So, he who wins gets to the final. So, you know, sharpen your pencils and
02:27a big round of applause for Callum and Glenn.
02:36And over in the corner, of course, Susie and Richard Madeley. Welcome back, both of you. This is it, chaps.
02:42One of these will become a finalist. So, let's go down to business. Callum, take it away. Let us go.

03:58Richard, what have you got over there?
04:00Have you noticed how this week, more and more of the words have had a Christmas theme to them?
04:03It's very strange, isn't it?
04:04If we get closer to the day.
04:05Well, we had feasting.
04:06We had a seven.
04:06We had tangos.

05:11I'm by
05:12It's going
05:12to be welcome here. To be part
05:15of it. I'm by
05:15now. And another.
05:16now. And another.
05:18yes yes eight eight eight two eights glenn action action yes calum i went for catenoid
05:27now how does that fit catenoid is a term from geometry um all about surface generated um by
05:33rotation basically around a horizontal axis very good very good well done and any other offering
05:40from over there those are two actions and catenoid all right good enough 16 points all and we go into
05:46our first numbers game calum six small please six small ones see if this can separate you two early
05:54on let's see if we can get a tricky one as well right these numbers are four ten two eight
06:02three
06:04and another two this could be tricky a target 763 763
06:40well calum 766 not written down three away what about glenn i know 770. so calum off you go um
06:54four times two is eight four times two is eight then ten plus two ten plus the other two is
07:0312
07:03times the two together for 96 times by eight times by eight is 768
07:12ah i have 765 actually sorry i've missed a glitch oh all right so should we turn to glenn
07:20four multiplied by two is eight four by two is eight plus two is uh ten plus the other two
07:26ten multiplied
07:28by eight uh yeah multiplied by the actual eight 80 minus the three minus the three 77 multiplied by the
07:3710 multiplied by 10 770 yeah all right but quite a long way off what does 763 look like to
07:47you rachel
07:47um well i can get you to 762 if you'd like to see that one um um i think 762
07:54is the best one so
07:55if you'd have said 10 plus 2 is 12 times by 4 is 48 um times by eight is um
08:07384 and then you have a
08:12three two what do you do with the three sorry take away 381 and times it by two and you
08:19get to one
08:19away one away all right very good so glenn has sprang into a lead early lead 21 points to calumn

10:44good. It's a chemical term, solute, all to do with solvents and things dissolved in

12:43the lead. Thank you, Glenn. Four large. Two little ones. Let's see if we can get something interesting.
12:48Right. The two little ones are 10 and 2. And the four large, as we know, 75, 25, 50 and
12:54100.
12:55And the target, 779. 779.
13:31So, Glenn. No, 776. 776. How about, Callum? 779. So, let's hear from you. 75 times 10.
13:41Yep. 75 times 10, 750. Add 25.
13:44775. 100 over 50. Is the 2. Add the other 2. Well done.
13:49It's a 4. I'll add that on. You've broken away.
13:52Well done.
13:57Good man, Callum. Well done. 51 to 39 now.
14:01Mm-hmm. Maybe it is a breakaway. But now we turn to Richard. Richard.
14:06You're a pretty urbane character, man about town. You eating out a lot or you prefer to stay at home?
14:12I like eating out. I was just thinking, you've got sons, haven't you?
14:16Yeah, one. One son. As of Iain and two step-sons.
14:19And we all know as fathers, as we get older, that the day will come when we are overtaken by
14:23our son.
14:24In some field or other, they will outstrip us. They will reach past us.
14:27And that moment will always be burned on our memory.
14:29Normally, it happens when the boy is in his teens or maybe 20s, possibly even 30s.
14:33With my son Jack, it was when he was four.
14:36We'd gone out to a restaurant in the trough of Boland in Lancashire.
14:41Beautiful little place for Sunday lunch. And when he was four, my son was very, very misbehaved.
14:44I don't know why. He was a little terror. And he was behaving very badly this particular day in this
14:48crowded restaurant.
14:50He was drumming his feet under the table and throwing bread rolls at his sister and screaming and just being
14:54a menace.
14:55And everybody sitting around was getting increasingly irritated, you could tell.
14:58And we couldn't get him under control. And the ultimate sanction with Jack when he was little was to say,
15:02If you don't behave yourself, Jack, I'm taking you to the car, which meant taking him to the car, putting
15:07him in his car seat, strapping him in and just leaving him.
15:09I mean, you'd stay inside, but you'd leave him alone for five or 10 minutes to calm down.
15:12And it worked. But it was he hated it. And it was the ultimate sanction.
15:14So I warned him three times and finally said, Right, that's it. We're going to the car.
15:17And I took him out of his seat and I put him over my shoulder and I started to say,
15:20Excuse me, excuse me, go through the tables.
15:22And you could see the relief on everybody's faces. Thank God he's taking a little so and so out.
15:26And as I was just getting to the restaurant door that led out into the car park, Jack had his
15:30brainwave.
15:30This was the moment he overtook me. He out-tacted me completely.
15:34He suddenly spread his hands out behind me. I couldn't see him, looked at the diners who were looking at
15:38him and said, Not the car! Help! Help! Please! Not the car!
15:43And they all think he's going to tie him to the wheel.
15:46He was dragging behind on the exhaust pipe. And so I was, anyway, I went out and there was a
15:50ripple of anxiety behind me.
15:51I said, You little, and he grinned at me.
15:55And so I had to take him back in. And that was the day that my son outsmarted me. God
15:59bless him. I've never forgotten it.
16:00Brilliant. Appealing to the restaurant.
16:02Absolutely.
16:04Yeah. Little rotter. As though you were a torturer of some terrible...
16:09Exactly. Not the car. Help!
16:11No, no. Anything but the car.
16:1451 to 39. Callum's in the lead now. And Callum, you're back on with a letters game.

18:56Hearting.
18:57Mm-hmm.

19:00Earthing, very good.
19:02Heart went in very recently as a verb, as in I heart New York, I heart you.
19:08To like very much, well, love.
19:09Fantastic.
19:09Well done.
19:10Well done.
19:11Both of you.
19:12And in the corner, Richard.
19:14It matches all the way today.
19:15We matched you.
19:17So the score's standing at 77 to Glenn, 65.
19:20We're with you, Callum, for a numbers game.
19:22Off you go.
19:23I'll go with six more again, please.
19:24Go with six more.

20:27Eight plus three plus two is 13.
20:29It's times by 10.
20:30Times by 10, 130.
20:34I've made a mistake, sorry.
20:36Oh.
20:37So, come on then.
20:39536, Glenn Webb.
20:42Three plus two is five.
20:44Three plus two is five.
20:46Multiplied by the 10 is 50.
20:48Yep.
20:49Oh, no.
20:49I've made a mistake as well.
20:50Oh, no.
20:52Oh, dear.
20:53So it's a standstill here then.
20:55Come on, Rachel.
20:56534.
20:57I think two away was actually the best possible.
21:00Is that right?
21:01Yes.
21:02All right.
21:02Very good.
21:03But sadly, no scores here.
21:0577 and 65 remains the score as we turn to a Tea Time teaser, which is Kids Very.
21:12And the clue, the kid's very brave.
21:15He wants to become this.
21:16The kid's very brave.
21:18He wants to become this.

23:06I don't think you can have impute, Glenn.
23:10I'll keep you waiting because I know this is a vital one.
23:13No, there's impudent but not impued.
23:16Sorry.
23:17Anything else?
23:19Abused, which is a six.

23:57It's time.
23:58It's time.
23:59It's time.
24:03It's time.
24:25It's time.這樣的
24:28Yes, Callum?
24:29Seven.
24:30Seven. How about Glen?
24:31Yes, seven as well.
24:32Sevens. Callum?

24:34Wordier.
24:35And, Glen?
24:36Worried.
24:37Worried.
24:38Yes.
24:38Pretty good?
24:39Yeah, got them both.
24:40Any advances?
24:41What about Dornier, as in the German aircraft?
24:44Is that...?
24:44Oh, Mr. Dornier.
24:46Yeah.
24:47Might be capitalised if it's in.
24:49Ah, yes.
24:50It'll be capitalised, yeah.
24:51Yeah.
24:52No.
24:52No.
24:53They called it the pencil.
24:55Do you remember the rear fuselage was so thin?
24:58Absolutely.
24:58The flying pencil, yeah.
24:5990 points to 72.
25:01But now it's that meaty part of the day, Susie.
25:05The meaty part.
25:07Susie's origins of words.
25:10Yes, Susie.
25:11Well, I talked a little while ago about animals
25:14and how they, again, are hidden behind lots of words
25:17that we use every day in English without realising it.
25:20And I talked about Bern, the city of Bern being named after bears
25:23because they were thought to be once prolific there in that town in Switzerland.
25:29And there are so many examples.
25:31Philip comes from the Greek meaning a lover of horses.
25:34Bernard, Bernadette, lovers of bears.
25:37Leon, Lionel, Leonard all come from lions, for example.
25:42But more place names are quite interesting.
25:43Panama is said to mean an abundance of fish in the local language.
25:48And Singapore takes its name from a Malay word, which meant lion city,
25:53because lions were said to prowl there.
25:56Accra literally means ants on account of the vast number of anthills in that area.
26:02So not quite so romantic.
26:03And Khartoum in Sudan means literally the end of an elephant's trunk
26:08because it's situated on a very, very narrow strip of land.
26:12There are so many other words.
26:14Delphinians are named after dolphins because the flower heads are supposed to look like a dolphin's head.
26:19Canopy, beautiful word used in Shakespeare a lot, actually comes from the Greek for mosquito or gnat
26:24because they started off as mosquito nets.
26:28And Arctic, I think I've mentioned before, again, comes from the bear
26:32because the Ursa Major shines down on it.
26:34But finally, my favourite, and I'm sure I've mentioned this a long, long time ago,
26:38but that's the word tragedy.
26:40Very, very serious, dramatic word.
26:42But actually, it goes back to the Greek meaning goat song.
26:45And it's either because goats were sacrificed there
26:47or it could possibly be because goats sound particularly awful.
26:51And so tragedy was named after them.
26:54Well done, Susie. Well done.
26:59A joyous lesson as ever.
