Johnny Newton will miss 'significant' time with a torn pec, and news on Nick Allegretti isn't good - meaning a reserve center could start Saturday. How concerning are these and the rest of the Commanders' injuries, especially considering how delicate the balance is of playing starters in the preseason?

00:00B. Mitch and Finley, 106.7 The Fan, out here, BigBear.ai Performance Center, Ashburn, Virginia.
00:07B. I had a funny interaction with Dan Quinn this morning.
00:11He was walking out of the tent, and I, he said, he's like, oh, you headed to Detroit?
00:18I was like, yeah, on Friday.
00:19He's like, isn't that tomorrow?
00:20I was like, I don't know.
00:21What day is it?
00:22He's like, I think it's Thursday.
00:23That's training camp in a nutshell.
00:25Nobody knows what day it is.
00:26Hey, you don't know?
00:28You just made your damn birthday.
00:30I got a hotel.
00:31You just got your hotel yesterday.
00:32Yeah.
00:33Did you get a flight yesterday?
00:34No, I've had the flight.
00:35You had the flight.
00:36I had the flight.
00:36And you don't know that tomorrow is Friday?
00:39Tomorrow is Friday.
00:40Yeah, but at first you didn't.
00:41I always know what day Wednesday is because I got to go to N.C.
00:44See, Dan is in his 50s.
00:45You're not.
00:47How old is Dan?
00:48Dan's like 55 or less.
00:52He and I have the same birthday.
00:55That's why y'all both forget.
00:56He knew.
00:57To his credit, he knew.
00:59I didn't know.
00:59Tomorrow is Friday, if you're curious.
01:01We're all traveling to Detroit, Michigan.
01:06B, let's have an injury conversation.
01:09Let's go.
01:09Let's start with Johnny Newton.
01:14The Johnny Newton situation is unfortunate.
01:17Yeah.
01:18And this is a guy that I think really needed to have a big year to kind of validate his
01:25draft selection, honestly.
01:27I mean, he was the second overall pick in the second round two years ago.
01:32Mm-hmm.
01:32And the production has not matched that draft status.
01:36And at a certain point, that no longer matters.
01:38You just got to be a good player.
01:39True.
01:40I think this is worse news.
01:43Tell me if you agree with this.
01:45Damn, I didn't realize Johnny Newton's birthday is next week.
01:47Now the guy's going to be laid up after having surgery for a torn pec.
01:50Jack, I think this season was more important for Johnny than necessarily his importance to the commanders.
02:00Like, if you're projecting out this D-line, I think Johnny Newton kind of ends up being your seventh, eighth
02:06guy.
02:07Like a rotational part of this thing.
02:09That's how you may see it.
02:11But when you watch him, he gets run.
02:15And I, listen, man, when you get drafted high, you get protections that other people don't get.
02:21So he was going to be given every chance to be on this football team.
02:24Yeah, I mean, if you look at the guys that were down.
02:26I think Shai Tuttle was starting to give him a little run for his money, though.
02:31Certainly.
02:31I think Cowart has looked impressed.
02:33Cowart stepped in last week and just kicked down the damn door.
02:37The issue for Newton, I think, I honestly think this defense may have been better for him,
02:42being kind of a 3-4 D-end rather than like a traditional – he's not going to play that
02:46nose.
02:47The body type they're getting for that position has been Settle, Suttle, or Tuttle, rather.
02:52Yeah.
02:52Cowart.
02:54You can probably throw Kinlaw down here once in a while.
02:56Yeah.
02:57Kinlaw and Payne are kind of playing your D-end spots.
03:01It's a blow.
03:03There's no doubt that it's a blow.
03:06Newton last year had five sacks on the season.
03:08Didn't he have the one three-sack game?
03:10Yeah.
03:10Yeah, that was week 17 against Philly, I guess.
03:17No, against Dallas at home.
03:19That was the Christmas Day game.
03:21I think at some point you kind of wonder what that future looks like.
03:26He'd be going into the last year of his deal next year.
03:28Maybe he makes it back this year, and then he can prove it on the field.
03:32But, I mean, a torn pec is a tough injury.
03:35Yeah, a torn pec is a tough injury, and the fact that he's going to be missing time,
03:38when he's back, he's going to have to come in and be much better than what he was.
03:43Because I think now at that point, when you have been scratching the surface
03:48and not really doing the things they expected, then you miss time.
03:53Somebody else may get a jump start.
03:55And then people forget about you quickly in sports.
03:59Yeah.
04:00That's kind of my point, is what is going to happen for –
04:05like, how does this impact him going forward?
04:08And I'm not sure how that's going to work.
04:10I think the biggest – so, a couple things.
04:14The Rashad White thing, the – did you see this last night?
04:18Yeah.
04:18The theory about the slip?
04:20I actually saw him when he did the actual thing, and I was like,
04:23it looked like he slipped.
04:24And then I saw him today, didn't look like he was limping or nothing to me.
04:29Yeah, he was back on the field, which is important to note.
04:32But I did think the slip theory was pretty darn funny,
04:36and I think it got enough legs that the team was like,
04:39all right, let's shut this down.
04:40It was a hamstring during the joint practices.
04:43It did make me laugh, though, because I had a lot of people –
04:46Tishler said this, a bunch of people said,
04:50what's the better injury theory,
04:52Rashad White slipping in the Ice Bucket Challenge video
04:55or Ryan Fitzpatrick on the water slide?
04:58Well, that slide thing, hey, the hypothetical was that he hurt himself on the slide.
05:08Going to the game, he was out rather quickly.
05:10I don't think he played since.
05:11No.
05:13I mean, that's a major injury.
05:14That one there, right?
05:15To be clear, Fitz, I think, has come out and said the water slide thing is complete nonsense.
05:20So just –
05:21What else would he say?
05:22I'm just saying I'm pointing that out.
05:23I'm just saying it.
05:25We're going to say hypothetically?
05:27Yeah.
05:28Allegedly?
05:30The Allegretti situation isn't good.
05:32But he got hurt on the first day of camp, missed about two weeks, came back,
05:36and now the calf is again an issue.
05:39He's out at least this weekend.
05:41Seems like DQ really wants him next week for the joint scrimmage – the joint practice against Baltimore.
05:45Yeah.
05:45I asked Quinn this morning, like, you guys have spoken so highly of Allegretti.
05:51I understand – I know who Nick is.
05:54I understand what they see and what they think he could be.
05:57Number 10 here, whoever's running the board, number 10 on the Dan Quinn cuts, what is the impact of him
06:06missing all this time?
06:08Yeah, for sure, JP, it has.
06:09Like, when you're not in there of, like, getting all the reps and the turns, and especially at the line
06:14of scrimmage,
06:15like, that's a big deal, you know, our padded practices.
06:18So with him not having as many, it's not ideal.
06:20This is an experienced player who's got, you know, a lot of games and starts and time under his belt.
06:26But you do need the time on task.
06:28So as we get into Sunday, you know, let's hope that, you know, trajectory continues and we're able to get
06:34him back out there.
06:34So those are the frustrating days for him.
06:37And, like, this guy's a real competitor.
06:40So it's a setback, but one that, hey, man, like, this is the best you can do to get right
06:45now.
06:46And I'm hopeful and optimistic as we get into next week that he'll be able to, like, really put together
06:52a full week.
06:53The Allegretti situation at this point, Brian, I mean, even the coach is saying, yeah, it does have an impact.
07:00How much of an impact do you think for you?
07:02It has an impact because he's the guy that you had penciled in.
07:06But let's be real.
07:08When they said Allegretti, most people were not high on it anyway, right?
07:13Right.
07:14You have no history of it.
07:15I think you and I were.
07:16Yes, because I like the fact that he's a competitor.
07:20But Good Jones, man, I like him, but he's been getting the play.
07:24Also, Goblin has gotten some.
07:26They got Brunskill.
07:27They think those guys have been getting the work.
07:31And if that goes wrong, you may not have the name you thought, but you don't know if you're going
07:38to have a guy that may come in and play as good, may play better.
07:42That's the thing about sports, about pro football.
07:45Guys sometimes go into something and you have this person penciled in, then he's not there.
07:51And the guy behind him comes in and playing, you don't miss a beat.
07:55But we don't really know what the beat is.
07:57What do we compare it to?
07:58We compare it to Tyler last year?
08:00You know, if anybody says he should have kept Tyler, he's out now for the year.
08:05So, at this point, I'm still going to judge based off of the guys playing.
08:09Let's see how well they play.
08:11Let's see if they make a step this week compared to what they did last week.
08:14For sure.
08:15I mean, it's going to be interesting.
08:18I think the calendar this year is really impacting a lot.
08:23Like, action is so far away.
08:26I do think, however, and I feel like I'm kind of in an area where not many people are.
08:35If Allegretti's not going, I don't want to see Jaden out there with Julian Good-Jones.
08:39Even if it's 5-10 snaps.
08:40But what if Good-Jones is the one that's there week one?
08:45See, the thing about it is the name of the person should not stop you from playing the guy.
08:51It's who may be in front of him when he gets out there.
08:54And, like, we know Tunsil's not going to be there, so it's going to be Coleman.
08:58Okay, if Allegretti may not be there, and it may be Good-Jones, it may be, you know,
09:01Goldman or somebody else, he needs to be playing with those guys, too.
09:05Because that's where that chemistry begins to get built.
09:07So, if you say, don't only put him out there with the people you thought were going to be out
09:11there,
09:12you know, then he don't play at all.
09:16And I just think that it's something about getting on the field and performing,
09:20because if that same thing happened in week one, if Allegretti is out,
09:24you're not going to pull him out the game when the other guy goes into the football game.
09:27Right.
09:27The difference for me, and listen, I understand, like, I'm the minority on this.
09:33Like, I get it.
09:34And I totally understand the other side viewpoint.
09:37But the difference to me is if Jayden has to play with Julian Good-Jones week one,
09:42he has to because that game counts.
09:43These games do not count.
09:45But the thing about it is if he has to play with Julian Good-Jones, he can learn tendencies.
09:49He can learn things that he does well, things he knows do well.
09:52Also, the coach can figure out what plays I have to call.
09:56Let's do something a little quicker.
09:57If you wait until week one to figure that out, that's a problem.
10:02I also think if we get to week one and Allegretti is still dealing with this calf strain,
10:08I don't think it will be Julian Good-Jones.
10:09I don't know that it will be Goulbin.
10:11I think it could be some dude that's on another roster right now.
10:18Like, that's the easy way you think, go get a veteran player.
10:22But that veteran player still got to come in and learn this game.
10:24Sure.
10:24Learn this offense.
10:25The guys that have been here since March, May, April, whenever it was,
10:31I think that that might be a better fit than going to get somebody from another team,
10:36unless that guy is just exceptional.
10:38Here's what I want to do.
10:39800-636-1067.
10:42800-636-1067.
10:44Let's open the phones and talk about who needs to play in this game.
10:48Dan Quinn this morning said a good amount of starters should play versus Detroit.
10:53Detroit, what does that mean, B?
10:56A good amount of starters should play versus Detroit.
10:59He's going to get some people in there, and they're going to be in for a short period of time,
11:03and you are crossing your fingers and hoping that nobody gets hurt.
11:07But I need to see some guys.
11:09See, one thing Dan talks about consistently is markers.
11:13Yeah.
11:14And I'd be damned if he could see markers and just watch guys on this football field
11:19without watching them in real action.
11:21The injuries, however, are stacking up.
11:24And my greatest area of concern is not Allegretti.
11:28It's the defensive line.
11:30Today, Tim Settle, Johnny Newton we already discussed, Dietrich Wise is on Pup.
11:34Odafa Owe to me is a big one that I'm circling.
11:37And that's a calf thing too.
11:38And you've said how the calf stuff makes you nervous because of what it's attached to,
11:43that Achilles, right?
11:45True.
11:46Calebon Chason's dealing with a knee.
11:48Jordan McGee is a linebacker.
11:49He's dealing with a shoulder.
11:50We did see, on a positive note, I saw Jeremy McNichols for the first time in a long time.
11:55He was out there working on the side field.
11:58We did see Rashad White.
12:01Chason was out there working to the side.
12:05But the D-line, like of this defensive overhaul, you add Cross, you add Robertson,
12:11you draft Stiles, you add Chennault.
12:13But the D-line is where they spent the most money.
12:16And I think the defensive line is what needed the most addition.
12:19And now it'll, I mean, do you think Owe's going to play?
12:22I don't.
12:23Probably not.
12:25Like, that's the single player you spent the most money on this offseason.
12:30But see, I think, Jay, we put the emphasis on spending the most money, this, that, and the other.
12:36Sometimes not playing the guys because you spent the most money on them.
12:40Sometimes not being extra cautious is because you spent the most money.
12:44And I think ever since money has gotten so big, it has screwed up football.
12:48Because that guy may be able to go.
12:50But the fact that I paid him, I'm not going to play him.
12:52But if I didn't pay a guy enough, I'm going to go play him.
12:55And then he goes out and then he balls out anyway.
12:57Some of the best games or some of the best athletes in this world have come when they were supposedly
13:02injured.
13:04And right now, if he's injured, you don't have to force it.
13:09If he's not injured, let him play.
13:12800-636-1067.
13:15800-636-1067.
13:17Dan Quinn says a good amount of starters should play versus Detroit.
13:21What does that mean?
13:22You answer the question when we return.
