00:00What up, everybody? It is 10 a.m. in the District of Columbia, points north, south, east, and west.
00:06B. Mitch and Finley coming to you live, BigBear.ai Performance Center, Ashburn, Virginia, and we're fired up.
00:11If you're watching on YouTube or on Monumental, you see we have a special guest to open the show, Mr.
00:16Deami Brown.
00:16DB, thank you for making time. How's it going, man?
00:18Man, good, man. I appreciate y'all for having me.
00:21How has this week of practice been for you?
00:24Oh, it's been good. We've been able to, you know, holler in on the details and, you know, prepare for
00:28this game that's coming up.
00:30But what's it like getting ready for a preseason game where there's some question who's going to be out there,
00:36how much you're going to be out there? Like, how does that impact preparation?
00:40It doesn't at all. You know, you always want to go in there and prepare like you're about to play
00:43the whole game.
00:44You never know the snap count, who's playing, or anything like that.
00:47So you always want to mentally be ready so you don't have to get ready when you get there.
00:51Like, oh, you're playing this much? And it's like, oh, man. So, nah, you prepare like you're playing a full
00:56game.
00:56Well, what's been different?
00:59I don't know why your mic's not up, B.
01:03He's up. I'm not sure.
01:05Deami, what Bemich was about to ask you, I think, is what has been different for you this kind of
01:14camp?
01:15Like, you were here for so long. Then you go to Jacksonville. Now you come back. How different does it
01:20all feel?
01:21Man, it actually doesn't feel different at all. For me, it's just another opportunity to go out there and, you
01:28know, develop and continue to, you know, raise the level of competition, strive for the best person that I can
01:38be throughout this time, and just find a way to get 1% better each day.
01:42So, you've been in the league for a good bit now, and I think every year you learn a little
01:46different thing about yourself, and then people begin to take ownership in my part in this team.
01:51How has that developed for you?
01:53So, for me, and how I see it is, you know, it's just being intentional and staying focused, you know,
01:59throughout this time.
02:01Don't ride the wave. Don't be up and down. You know, try to stay level and continue to rise.
02:06And for me is, you know, stay focused and then bring energy every single day. Bring energy to my teammates
02:11so, you know, so we can go out there and be the team that we are, be our identity.
02:16Your identity, like, you are such a positive person. Like, you're often smiling. Like, you seem to enjoy the work.
02:23How important is it to bring that every day, and does that ever get difficult for you?
02:28I think, you know, everybody go through things, you know, throughout life outside of football. But, you know, when you
02:34come and you're able to play this game, you know, everybody don't get to play.
02:38And a lot of people have dreams of playing this game. So, I get to do some fun. It's something
02:42that I love to do every single day.
02:44But, even bringing energy, you never know what somebody's going through. So, if I can bring some positive energy to
02:49them and give them a different outlook and have them, you know, have fun and focus up at the same
02:54time, we can go out there and be the team that we want to be.
02:56You all did a lot of, uh, some trips this offseason, working together. How much did that help bring that
03:02chemistry together?
03:03Oh, man, it definitely helps a lot. You know, it was new faces for me.
03:06You know, so, just coming in and seeing new faces and building that bond and chemistry with the guys, you
03:12know, it's easy to understand them.
03:14And, just going out here, playing the game, you can understand, you know, exactly what somebody's thinking, how they're feeling
03:21and what's going on.
03:22So, it's, okay, I know this is going on, but focusing on this.
03:26Or, you know, bring some type of smile or joy, joke around a little bit, and then still focus up
03:31at the end of the day.
03:31And I think that right there, just understanding who somebody is, you get to know your teammates, you know how
03:36you can talk to somebody and when you can talk to somebody.
03:38And I think that's the most important thing.
03:40A lot of people see Jaden always smiling and things of that nature.
03:43They may not understand he's a damn worker.
03:45Yeah.
03:45And you were here when he came three years ago.
03:48What's the difference in him now compared to then?
03:52Oh, man, just the focus and the intention that he has.
03:55He wants to win.
03:58That competitive drive just raised more.
04:00And I just being around him throughout, you know, the offseason and now is, man, whatever happened before, he definitely
04:09don't want to go through that again.
04:11And you can see it in him, man.
04:12Every day he come out here, he's laser focused.
04:14He's very intentional.
04:15He's dialed in.
04:16De'Ami Brown joining us.
04:18We appreciate you making time to sit with us here in the tent.
04:20What do you think of our tent?
04:22It's a tent.
04:24I think we can hang some posters on the tent.
04:27We need a De'Ami.
04:28We'll do that next year.
04:29Yeah, next year.
04:29Next year.
04:31We talk so much ball with you.
04:33I'm curious, where's home now?
04:35So you grew up in Charlotte.
04:37You were here for four seasons.
04:39You play in Jacksonville.
04:40Now you're back here.
04:41I know you spent some time in Southern California.
04:43Like, where's home?
04:44Charlotte.
04:45Charlotte?
04:46That's home.
04:46Charlotte is going to always be home.
04:48Somewhere I go every offseason, I don't go anywhere else.
04:51I mean, I take my choice here and there.
04:53But at the end of all of it, Charlotte.
04:55So you're a Carolina boy.
04:57What do you think of Southern California?
04:59That's a different place.
05:00It's too far for me.
05:02Too far for me.
05:04No, no, no.
05:04I mean, it's nice.
05:05It feels good out there, but no.
05:07Too far.
05:08What did you think of the Tar Heels getting a new basketball coach?
05:13We don't even have to talk about the football team.
05:14I know how much basketball matters down there.
05:16Were you surprised by how that all went down with Huber Davis?
05:19Man, I ain't going to lie to you.
05:22Man, the school is so different now with NIL.
05:25Like, no matter the sport, it's just so much going on.
05:29It's almost hard to see what's the problem.
05:33Yeah, yeah.
05:34It's like, because, I mean, you could blame it on the coach.
05:36I mean, you kind of have to at the end of the day on the outside world.
05:39You would blame it on the coach if players not being productive and you're not winning the games.
05:43I mean, I guess you put that on the coach, but, hey.
05:46You were drafted in 21.
05:48Are you – was NIL a thing yet when you were drafted?
05:52Nope.
05:53Are you like –
05:53And look how quick that changed.
05:55It happened – so, it happened that year, though.
05:57Oh.
05:58Yeah, it happened that year.
05:59Did that sting a little?
06:00No, because that year, see, they was getting a little bit of money.
06:04They were getting like $40,000, $30,000.
06:06Yeah.
06:06Okay, I'm fine.
06:07I'm in the league.
06:08I'm good with that.
06:09But then, like a couple years later.
06:12Well, you know that –
06:14Bemich is still mad he didn't get NIL.
06:16Yeah, and I came out in 1990.
06:19Listen, a judge today has ruled that guys can go into the transfer portal, NFL players.
06:27Huh?
06:27Does that make – NFL players can get into the transfer portal.
06:31Does that make any sense to do what?
06:33To go back to school.
06:34There are guys in training camp right now that are now going back to college.
06:40They're allowed to.
06:42They're making more money on the NIL than the practice squad.
06:45They're probably not going to make a team.
06:47So – but they shouldn't allow that.
06:49Isn't that crazy?
06:50They can do that.
06:51A judge just ruled on it.
06:52A judge just ruled that.
06:54Like, yeah.
06:54Two days ago?
06:55Nah, nah, that's not even fair.
06:57It's not.
06:58That's not even fair because now you're not even getting kids the opportunity no more.
07:01Yeah.
07:02Oh, nah.
07:03Yeah, it's crazy, right?
07:05You know what?
07:06I thought about going back, man.
07:07Who you – nah.
07:10Dude, Alabama had a guy play basketball for them last basketball season
07:16that played seven career NBA games.
07:18Yeah.
07:19Oh, nah, you can't do that one.
07:20They keep doing it, man.
07:21They did it.
07:23And then they later came out and got rid of him.
07:24Later on, they got rid of him, but they let him play.
07:26What's the benefits for that?
07:28I think the benefit is that I think everyone wants to blame,
07:31get mad at players for transferring back and forth.
07:34But it's the adults that's screwing this thing up that's allowing all that.
07:37That's what I'm saying.
07:38It's rookies that come in 25, 26, 24.
07:43Like, I came out with 20 years old.
07:45Yeah.
07:4621 years old.
07:48Yeah, you're cheating.
07:50You got to let the kids, like, at least get some type of chance or opportunity.
07:53And that's why the portal is so crazy because nobody's getting the opportunity.
07:57It's, oh, we got this older guy that can do this.
07:59Man, nah.
08:00It's crazy, dude.
08:01College sports is wilder than pro sports right now.
08:04Yeah, it is.
08:04Because at least pro sports, there's contracts and there's, like, rules to it all.
08:08But college sports, complete wild west.
08:11It's crazy, man.
08:13Yeah, then I heard, like, you can have, like, your mom or dad could be your agent.
08:17I'm sure.
08:18In college?
08:19Oh, yeah.
08:20Like, I know a ton of NFL agents.
08:21Oh, most mom and dad are agents.
08:23That have now opened it up to they're doing more NIL work than they're doing NFL work.
08:29I don't know.
08:30I'm telling you, it's crazy out there.
08:34What do you do?
08:36You guys are here early and you work your ass off all day.
08:39What do you do in the evening to kind of wind down?
08:41Sleep.
08:42What time are you going to bed?
08:44About 10 o'clock.
08:46College, they go about 9, 9.30.
08:48Yeah.
08:49I try.
08:50I try sometimes, but I got to talk to my people a little bit.
08:53So, 10 o'clock.
08:55That's my cutoff time.
08:56There you go.
08:56Netflix.
08:57No TV.
08:58No TV at all?
09:00Movies?
09:01So, no screen time?
09:02On my phone, yeah.
09:04On my phone.
09:04I play games on my phone.
09:05What are you playing?
09:07Domino's.
09:09I don't know.
09:10Sometimes you know you have the games and you got the ads.
09:12And I just pick a game off the ad and keep playing that.
09:15What are you always playing?
09:16Solitaire?
09:17I play Solitaire all the time.
09:18I play with Candy Crush.
09:20Do you get money off Solitaire for real?
09:22Because, you know, on the ad.
09:23On some games, you can.
09:24No, they say on Solitaire, you can get money.
09:25Not all of them.
09:26Some of the Solitaire games, you can.
09:28Oh, okay.
09:29You play the one.
09:30I've done it before.
09:30You get some money.
09:31I want some.
09:32How much?
09:33Give a little bit.
09:35Hey, they're always listening for tax money.
09:38I never discuss money on air.
09:43That's why you say a little bit.
09:45I don't think we've talked since Steph Diggs arrived.
09:48What has that been like in the room, just a veteran of that level of accomplishment?
09:51Oh, man, it's been amazing to have him in the room.
09:55He's a funny guy.
09:55I ain't going to lie to you.
09:56He's very funny.
09:58But, you know, just having him with the experience that he has and that competitive nature of, for one, he
10:04wants to be the best, and he wants to win.
10:06And that's something that you want on your team because he helps other guys that's around him, too, as well.
10:11And I just think adding him was a big piece, and I think that can do a whole lot for
10:15us.
10:16And then, lastly, from a football perspective, snack update.
10:21How's Antonio doing with snacks in the receiver room?
10:23Terrible.
10:25Terrible.
10:27So he has to go out and get the snacks and bring them to the room?
10:30Yeah.
10:30And what's the worst snack he's brought?
10:36What's that healthy popcorn?
10:39Skinny Pop?
10:40Yeah.
10:40He brought y'all Skinny Pop?
10:42I don't know why.
10:44Do you not give him requests?
10:46Like, dude, I want Skittles.
10:47No, I gave him a whole list.
10:49I gave him a whole list.
10:51So you better not miss nothing on this list.
10:53Let me get everything on here.
10:55Okay.
10:56He doing a little bit of it.
10:59Now, but B, you said you weren't doing that because you didn't want to spend the money.
11:02Well, Ernest would give me the money, so that's why I ended up doing it like that.
11:05Ernest Bonner gave me the money to go get the stuff.
11:08But, I mean, I wasn't making a lot of money back then, so I wasn't going to spend my money.
11:12Oh, no, he good.
11:13Oh, he's good.
11:14Yeah, yeah, yeah.
11:14I wasn't good.
11:15He just played four years at Clemson in the NIL era.
11:18I imagine, I'm not counting anybody's pockets, but I think it's entirely possible he made
11:23more money at Clemson than he is this year in the NFL.
11:26Does that seem fair?
11:28Third round pick?
11:30It could be about the same.
11:31I mean, that's...
11:32Could not be.
11:33It could be about the same.
11:34I'm not sure what he made out there, but it could be about the same.
11:36It's the Wild West.
11:37Yeah, I know we need to re-up, though.
11:42We need some snacks.
11:43We have some snacks.
11:44Would you like a granola bar?
11:45We don't have any more.
11:46No, we got one.
11:47That's too healthy.
11:48What are your go-to snacks?
11:49I need, like, Oreos.
11:51I love Oreos.
11:52Some Reese's.
11:53Some type of candy.
11:54Have you talked with...
11:56I know it's kind of the business side, but have you talked with the team president, Mark
11:59Klaus, at all?
12:00You should.
12:01If you're an Oreos guy...
12:02He used to work with Oreos.
12:03Where?
12:03He was, like, the brand ambassador, the brand manager and all that stuff.
12:07He is the guy...
12:08You know how now there's a million different Oreo flavors?
12:10Yeah.
12:11You get mint Oreos or strawberry shortcake?
12:12No, no, no.
12:13He invented all that.
12:15I like the birthday cakes.
12:17See, I ain't gonna lie.
12:17My taste buds don't go that far.
12:20I don't want the mint.
12:21I hate mint.
12:21My taste buds don't go that far.
12:22You like just...
12:23What?
12:24Are you a regular Oreo or a double-stuff Oreo?
12:26Nah.
12:27Double-stuff.
12:27Me too.
12:28Double-stuff.
12:28I have a theory.
12:30Golden.
12:31Oreos have shrunk over the years.
12:33They have.
12:33Like, the regular Oreo, you get less cream filling than you used to, so you almost have
12:38to get the double-stuff.
12:39Yeah, for sure.
12:40That's what they do.
12:41They want you to get the double-stuff because now they can get you bigger.
12:44You get more stuck to it.
12:46The one, the small ones, now, if you get the regular Oreo, you just get that much cream.
12:50You get the double-stuff, you're gonna lose your mind.
12:53Add a couple pounds on to you.
12:54We gotta get Antonio to get some double-stuff Oreos.
12:57Yeah.
12:57Yeah.
12:58Talk to Klaus, dude.
12:59He need to get that, he need to get some Reese's, he need to get some more chips.
13:04What's your go-to chip?
13:06Doritos.
13:07I love Doritos.
13:08What is it, the sweet, spicy?
13:10Yeah.
13:10The purple bag?
13:11Yeah.
13:12Yeah.
13:12When I, I lived in Wilmington, North Carolina for a year when I got done with graduate school
13:16and I was so broke.
13:18I was working at the number two newspaper in Wilmington, which is not a very big circulation.
13:23I was making $22,000 a year, which is not much.
13:26Yeah.
13:27And I was so broke that a lot of nights I determined the most value to fill you up, the
13:33$199 bag
13:35of Doritos, you're full.
13:36It's not healthy, but you're full.
13:38And that was my dinner probably two or three nights a week.
13:40All you need is that and something to drink.
13:41Yeah, dude.
13:41I got that and the cheer wine.
13:43I was chilling.
13:43That's it.
13:44That's how you do it.
13:45The cola of the Carolinas.
13:47Deami, thank you for the time, man.
13:48It's always good to hang out.
13:50I appreciate y'all.
13:50Appreciate you, brother.
13:51What's up?
13:51Thank you, man.
13:52You can take off.
13:53You're welcome to hang as long as you'd like.
13:55Oh, I'm chilling, man.
13:56We got Mountain Dew.
13:57You want a Mountain Dew?
13:58I don't know.
14:00Mountain Dew, sir.
14:01Oh, you got to say that.
14:03That's my favorite drink.
14:04I'm a Diet Coke guy.
14:06Sprite.
14:06Can you put the mic back on?
14:07We can have a soda discussion.
14:09You're a Sprite man.
14:10Mountain Dew keep you up.
14:11No, Sprite.
14:12You drink a Mountain Dew to hell with the energy.
14:17You don't need that.
14:18Mountain Dew is loaded with caffeine.
14:20I thought the Pepsi keep you up.
14:22Mountain Dew.
14:23Tell you.
14:23I'm a Diet Coke.
14:24I'm here to Louisiana.
14:25Mountain Dew.
14:27Chris is the king of Mountain Dew.
14:29Really?
14:30Really, all you need is a ginger ale.
14:32You know what I've heard?
14:33Ginger ale on airplanes is really good for your stomach.
14:37Like, there's something about the ginger ale that settles your stomach at altitude.
14:40The ginger settles you all the time.
14:42I like ginger ale.
14:43That's why I mix mine with my tequila.
14:44I mix it with vodka.
14:46I don't know if you've done that, but it's quite good.
14:51Have you ever had a ginger beer?
14:54No.
14:54So it's non-alcoholic, but it's like way more potent on the ginger.
14:59Yeah, it's a little stronger.
15:00You can get the ginger.
15:01Also, you can get the ginger ale bowl.
15:04Huh?
15:04What is that?
15:05Ginger ale bowl.
15:05It's very, very potent.
15:07Bold.
15:08Bold.
15:08Yeah, it's strong.
15:11It's real strong.
15:12We asked Cosby about this yesterday.
15:14Are you excited to go to London for the London game?
15:17Yeah, I went to London last year.
15:19With Jacksonville?
15:20Yeah, yeah.
15:21So how was that experience?
15:22Because I don't know that the players enjoyed the Madrid trip they took last year,
15:27and I think London is so much more kind of advanced in hosting NFL games
15:32because they do it all the time.
15:33Did you go twice?
15:35No, so we went once last year.
15:38Okay.
15:38We was out there the whole week.
15:40I mean, I went shopping the whole week.
15:42That's what I did.
15:44It was fun for me.
15:45You like the shops or what?
15:46Yeah, yeah, yeah, definitely.
15:47It's cheaper out there too.
15:48Really?
15:49Yeah.
15:50All right.
15:50That's good to know.
15:51You can save a lot of money.
15:54Especially if you're buying like high-end.
15:56Yeah, like the stuff that Lauren wants you to bring her back.
15:59Yeah, go to the Louie store.
16:00Yeah, get a couple bags.
16:02You're telling me Louie's cheaper over there than here?
16:04Most definitely.
16:05All right, but I think we got to not tell anybody about that too
16:07because the customs people might be asking.
16:11No, you're going to pay your customs tax, but still, it still ends up being less.
16:14Yeah.
16:15Okay.
16:15Why is that?
16:16Because we just try to rob everybody in the United States.
16:19Everybody should know that.
16:20We have taxes that shouldn't even be on certain stuff.
16:23Okay.
16:24Right about that one.
16:27Cosby was saying though that like generally in Europe, things are smaller than we're used
16:31to in America.
16:32How were like the hotel rooms and the showers and all that kind of stuff on your trip?
16:38That was like normal size.
16:39That's what I think.
16:41London is almost like New York.
16:42Nothing is normal size for Cosby.
16:44That's a good boy.
16:48He's for 6'7", 320, 335.
16:51London is just like New York.
16:52You go out to New York, that's London.
16:54Yeah, I think that's fair.
16:56I'm trying to think the last time I was there, but it is.
16:59I was there in 1992.
17:01So, my father.
17:02Man, he got some age on him.
17:06He played a game in Japan.
17:07No, I didn't play in Japan.
17:09Didn't you play somewhere else overseas?
17:10I played in London.
17:11That was it?
17:11Yeah, in Wembley Stadium.
17:14I got to start at 58 two days ago.
17:17That's why we have the happy birthday balloon.
17:18I don't know where it went, but it was right here in the seat.
17:21Yeah.
17:21Happy belated.
17:22Appreciate you, brother, son.
17:24Is there a road trip you look forward to besides London?
17:30All of them.
17:31Opening in Philly?
17:32All of them.
17:33How excited are you for this year?
17:35Man, it's hard for me to talk about this year.
17:40Remember, I want to keep it one game at a time, but we ready.
17:45Just know that.
17:46We ready.
17:46All right.
17:46Thank you for the time, man.
17:47I like that.
17:48That's a great answer.
17:49We'll end it there.
17:50Next year, we'll get some Sprite in the tent when we're coming.
17:53Oh, yeah.
17:53For sure.
17:55Deami Brown joining us.
17:56Quick break.
17:57We're going to run through everything we learned at Commander's Practice this morning.
