In a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Karnataka representative DK Shivakumar raised the long-standing Cauvery water issue, advocating a shift from water sharing to water cooperation based on equity, transparency, and mutual respect while protecting Karnataka's lawful share. Shivakumar emphasized that the proposed Mekedatu project would benefit farmers in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry alongside Karnataka. Reporter Apoorva noted that the proposal comes amid rising tensions between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, where the state government remains firm on constructing the Mekedatu dam for drinking water needs despite ongoing opposition from Tamil Nadu and proceedings before the Supreme Court and Cauvery tribunal.

00:00DKS has raised the Kaveri issue with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in that meeting that happened,
00:05where DKS has also posted to this effect, the post that reads that I quote,
00:09Moving from water sharing to water cooperation based on equity, transparency and cooperation,
00:16while protecting Karnataka's lawful share and the rights of riparian states in the Kaveri, Krishna, Tungabhadra, Pennar and Pallar basins.
00:26The Mekadatu project is important not only for Karnataka but also for Tamil Nadu as every drop of water from
00:33the project will benefit farmers in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
00:37Let me take this to my colleague Apoorva joining us on the broadcast, Apoorva.
00:41This latest post by DKS, how is one to read into it in terms of the issues settling between Karnataka
00:48and Tamil Nadu and what next for the Mekadatu project?
00:56Well, that's right. In fact, if you see, it's going to be interesting to see the kind of agenda that
01:03DKS, the Karnataka Chief Minister,
01:05has put forth for Union Home Minister Amit Shah as well, especially when it comes to the Kaveri water issue.
01:11We have seen time and time again the Karnataka government stand on Kaveri water as well as the Mekadatu issue
01:17as well.
01:18The Karnataka government wants to be and is rather hell-bent on going ahead and, you know, construction the Mekadatu
01:25dam which the Tamil Nadu government has been opposing.
01:28And that's why the matter even, you know, for years right now has been at the Supreme Court and we
01:33also have the Kaveri tribunal that is going back and forth on the meetings.
01:36This proposal that has been given by DK Shiv Kumar, you know, this comes at a time when there is
01:42still raising tensions between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu as well,
01:46with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Siv Vijay also going ahead and talking about this issue.
01:52Yes, there is said to be an all-party meeting that will likely take place in Tamil Nadu,
01:56but when it might take place is a question that still needs an answer for.
02:00But meanwhile, the Karnataka government and DK Shiv Kumar being proactive in going ahead and demanding for the needs of
02:08Karnataka for the state,
02:10saying that without the Mekadatu construction, without the Kaveri water project that is going forward,
02:15it will be difficult not only for Bengaluru but also for Karnataka in terms of water procurement as well.
02:21All right, Apoorupa, I want to thank you for getting us those latest details of what we wait and watch
02:27how that progresses.
