In this second video of the series "revisiting ALL versions of the telenovela Rubí," it's time to talk about what, in my opinion, is the darkest adaptation of the story.

The 1970 film, starring Irán Eory, presents a much less romanticized Alejandro than we're used to seeing...

In fact, for me, there's no doubt that he took the protagonist's life!

Let me know in the comments if you agree with me or not!

00:00Released in 1970, the film Rubí hit theaters two years after the first version of the telenovela.
00:07This time, the role went to actress Irán Ehori.
00:11Those of us over 30 know her as Aunt Victoria from María la del Barrio
00:17and as the sugar mommy who stole Paulina's man in La Usurpadora.
00:22Produced by Carlos Enrique Taboada, this version has some differences from the telenovela
00:28and the accident at the end makes it much easier to analyze and understand
00:33that this story's male hero was a character with very questionable morals.
00:41The film begins by throwing Rubí's fateful accident right in our faces,
00:46but here we only see a woman falling from a building window and being taken to the hospital.
00:52We still had to find out how she ended up meeting such a cruel fate.
00:56The beginning is very similar to the other versions.
01:00Rubí's mother calls her to have breakfast while the late diva admires herself in front of the mirror.
01:07Despite the premise of poverty, the family's house in the film looks better
01:11than the crumbling little houses from the other telenovela versions.
01:16A two-story house with spacious rooms and no cracks in the walls.
01:22Rubí spills coffee on her sister Christina's dress, leaving the poor thing devastated.
01:28Of course, since this is a film, this version is a heavily condensed adaptation of the original story.
01:34There's no way to keep all the dialogue and situations we know in a one-hour-and-forty-minute production.
01:40So instead of that whole conversation exposing Rubí's envy over her sister's new dress,
01:46we simply see her deliberately spill coffee on it.
01:50Maribel reads one of her suitor César's letters to a group of friends, including Ruy.
01:55Some grown man shows up complaining that Ruy stood him up the day before and asks for another date.
02:02But she dismisses him, claiming she'll be very busy.
02:05She tells Maribel she isn't going to waste her time on poor men and that the right man for her
02:11would come along soon.
02:13Rubí shows some interest when she meets her friend's father.
02:16But just like in the telenovela, it never goes beyond an initial flirtation.
02:21Maribel tells Rubí that she met César through his sister, who had studied with her and now lived abroad.
02:28Rubí rummages through her friend's wardrobe.
02:30And when she is given a dress, she doesn't even try to play hard to get or act humble.
02:37Rubí asks whether Maribel told César about her leg condition.
02:41And Maribel says she assumes his sister must have told him.
02:44Rubí encourages her friend to tell him the truth herself.
02:48And Maribel promises to do so in her next letter.
02:51Maribel's nanny arrives and offers her hand to greet Rubí,
02:55who ignores the poor woman as if she were a pesky fly passing by.
02:59After being snubbed by another poor woman,
03:02the nanny immediately develops a grudge against her girl's unpleasant friend.
03:07When Rubí gets home, she tells her mother and sister that she is angry
03:11because a cripple shouldn't have so much money.
03:14Christina replies that she wouldn't trade their poor father for anyone else.
03:19Rubí says the man was good for nothing because they live in a pigsty.
03:23Unlike the first telenovela, we immediately see a Rubí who despises the memory of her late father.
03:30The mother in this version, however, seems much more passive to me
03:34and just sits there with her poor victim look.
03:37The absurdity of smoking everywhere continues to give us some gems,
03:41this time with a passenger inside an airplane puffing away as if there were no tomorrow.
03:46Yes, none other than Dr. Alejandro,
03:50whose hobby seems to be damaging other people's health by turning them into passive smokers.
03:55His little friend also immediately proves to be a piece of work,
03:59checking out the flight attendant's legs.
04:02This César seems almost like Fernando from the telenovela Teresa,
04:06with his history of being a shameless womanizer.
04:09Maribel anxiously waits at the airport for her scoundrel boyfriend to arrive,
04:14along with her father and best friend.
04:16I don't know why they change Alejandro's last name in every version.
04:21I'm not even going to try to write this one's.
04:23This version of the doctor seems more open to interacting with Rubí.
04:27In fact, he's the one who invites her to go out to the garden with him and leave the couple
04:32alone.
04:32But just like the first Alejandro,
04:35he makes it clear from their very first conversation that he isn't rich
04:39and that he went to medical school on a scholarship.
04:42Ruby casually continues the conversation and asks about César's financial situation.
04:48The earlier versions of Ruby were much smarter and more cunning,
04:52at least in my opinion.
04:54And of course, when she finds out that her friend's suitor is an heir,
04:58she pretends to be happy for her friend when, in reality,
05:01she is already starting to plot her sinister man-stealing schemes.
05:06So far, the two of them had been getting along.
05:08But when Ruby comments that Maribel is an invalid,
05:12Alejandro's face immediately changes
05:14and he develops an instant dislike for the two-faced woman standing before him.
05:20Alejandro offers to take Ruby home,
05:22and inside the taxi, he offers her another cigarette.
05:25I have no idea how people back then lived past 30.
05:29And the human chimney of a doctor notices her change in behavior
05:34now that she knows he isn't wealthy.
05:36The doctor says goodbye with the following words.
05:40Don't hold a grudge against me.
05:42I promise I won't tell Maribel what you really think of her.
05:45Ruby slams the car door and calls Alejandro an idiot.
05:50César asks his doctor friend whether Maribel could undergo surgery.
05:54Alejandro replies that it would be possible, although complicated.
05:58César says that could happen after the wedding,
06:01which would take place as soon as possible.
06:03He asks Alejandro what he thought of Ruby,
06:06and gets the answer that she was beautiful, but frivolous.
06:10The four of them would go out to dinner the following night.
06:13Being as foolish as ever,
06:15Maribel dresses up her friend like an overpriced Christmas tree.
06:19She's basically handing Ruby every weapon she needs to stand out even more
06:24and begin her opportunistic man-stealing plan.
06:27The only one who doesn't seem to fall for her charms is Alejandro,
06:31who compliments only Maribel when she arrives.
06:34Being the venomous snake that she is,
06:36Ruby asks whether César and Maribel aren't going to dance,
06:40deliberately poking at a sore spot and then playing dumb.
06:45Alejandro invites Ruby to dance,
06:47and asks why she enjoys hurting her friends so much.
06:51Ruby keeps playing innocent and says she didn't mean to.
06:55It's not my fault she's an invalid.
06:58When Ruby says that, Alejandro squeezes her
07:02and orders her not to speak about Maribel that way again.
07:06Maribel is sad because she can't dance,
07:09and seeing this, César says he hates dancing anyway.
07:13When the other couple returns to the table,
07:16Ruby's face drops when she hears that César
07:18has already asked Maribel's father for her hand in marriage.
07:24The following morning, as shameless as ever,
07:28Ruby answers her friend's fancy telephone while taking a bubble bath,
07:32complete with a premium-looking bath headband.
07:35Don't ask me why there is a telephone next to the bathtub,
07:38ready to be answered.
07:39César calls to invite his fiancé out,
07:42and also takes the opportunity to invite Ruby along to Third Wheel.
07:46She accepts, but asks that Alejandro not come
07:50because he was supposedly bothering her too much with his flirting.
07:54César, still being the same idiot,
07:57completely buys the story,
07:58just as he refuses to believe his friend's warnings
08:01that Ruby is interested in him.
08:04César mistakes his friend's concern for jealousy,
08:07and the film repeats the extremely strange plot point
08:10of the groom being responsible for buying his fiancé's entire trousseau.
08:15Honestly, I'd never seen anything like that before.
08:18They are out in the countryside,
08:20and the cruel man-stealer Ruby suggests that they go horseback riding.
08:25Of course, Maribel says she can't do it,
08:28even with a gentle horse,
08:29leaving an opening for Ruby to be alone with the fool.
08:33Alejandro shows up without being invited,
08:36and Ruby goes all in,
08:38galloping straight toward Maribel
08:40with every intention of crushing the poor girl.
08:43If you're wondering how this suburban girl Ruby
08:46learned to become such an excellent jockey
08:49with complete mastery of horseback riding,
08:51just know that I'm wondering the exact same thing.
08:55Let's just accept that it makes absolutely no sense and move on.
09:00Alejandro becomes a great hero by saving his friend's life.
09:04He clearly saw that Ruby did it on purpose,
09:07despite her pretending that she had lost control of the horse.
09:11Karma came down hard,
09:13and Ruby was the one who ended up on the ground.
09:16The next day, Ruby goes to look for the engineer at his office
09:20and uses the same strategy of modeling her friend's trousseau
09:24to get closer to the man.
09:26She leaves a gap open in the fitting room
09:28so César can watch her changing clothes.
09:31And here, we're reminded of the same scene in the 2004 version, aren't we?
09:36Something we didn't see in the original,
09:39which was a more restrained version.
09:42The shameless one already starts canceling dates with Medibel,
09:47inventing business excuses,
09:49when, in truth, he was going out with the homewrecker.
09:52Alejandro will stop sharing an apartment with César
09:55to go live in the residence quarters of the hospital,
09:58where he will start working.
10:00And, of course, that only opens more and more space
10:04for Ruby to achieve her objectives.
10:07This César is even more of a jerk than the previous one,
10:11and tells Alejandro that it would be more pleasant if Maribel could be cured,
10:16because it was better to have a woman who could dance.
10:18The great, pathetic fool still says he wants to be a father,
10:23as if the fiancé's leg problem were an impediment to that.
10:27Yes, just like the godfather from the 2004 version,
10:30who thought women's reproductive systems were in their legs.
10:34When Alejandro informs that a sequela of polio did not prevent a woman from getting pregnant,
10:40the friend replies that that was a great relief.
10:43Women being treated as high-heeled incubators.
10:47Nothing new so far.
10:48When César takes Ruby to choose Medibel's engagement ring,
10:52the jeweler thinks Ruby is the fiancé.
10:55She asks why, and the man says that love cannot be hidden.
11:01On the way back home, Ruby says goodbye in the car,
11:05saying that that had been their last meeting.
11:08But he declares himself, and they kiss.
11:11She says she also loves him, but pretends to think of Maribel.
11:15César insists, basically saying that as far as he was concerned,
11:19Maribel could go to hell.
11:21Of course, he was not that blunt with the words, but the idea was that.
11:26He gives the engagement ring to Ruby, saying he bought it for the woman he really loved.
11:31Being the same coward as always, César tells Maribel that he received a letter
11:36saying his mother was ill and that, therefore, he would need to travel.
11:40All to postpone the wedding for a few weeks, making the poor thing a fool.
11:45When Alejandro visits the idiot in his engineer's office,
11:50César confesses that, in 20 days, he fell in love with Ruby
11:55and no longer wanted to marry Maribel.
11:58Meanwhile, poor Maribel tries on her little wedding dress
12:02without suspecting the evils surrounding her.
12:05Raising superstition to the cube, the nanny says that the simple act
12:10of trying on the wedding dress before the wedding brings bad luck.
12:14For God's sake, my lady, if it were like that, no one would even reach the altar.
12:20While smoking in the engineer friend's office, Alejandro finds a note from the secretary,
12:25warning that Ruby called, saying she would wait for César at the university door.
12:30César arrives all pissed off because Alejandro had sent the trousseau to Maribel.
12:37Yes, what was supposed to be her own trousseau, but now César wanted to give all that to Ruby
12:44and claims that Alejandro's attitude would compromise him more.
12:48There was no way things could possibly have been more compromised than they already were.
12:53But then he claims to have reflected on everything and promises to stay away from Ruby.
12:59Alejandro shows up for his arranged meeting with Ruby and tries to deceive her,
13:04saying that César sent him to apologize, but that he would marry Maribel and never see Ruby again.
13:11Ruby doesn't buy that poorly told story either, thanks to her enormous self-confidence.
13:16But instead of investigating things with Maribel, she goes straight for her target's jugular,
13:22showing up at his office after everyone else has left.
13:25Well, she thinks she'll find him alone, but Alejandro is doing an excellent job playing the role of an
13:32obsessive spirit. César was supposed to go to the movies with Maribel that night,
13:37but he stops by the office to pick up some papers and ends up finding his friend and Ruby there.
13:43Alejandro tries to convince Ruby by making arguments meant to awaken her empathy for Maribel,
13:49but Ruby once again says that it's not her fault the other woman is sickly.
13:55César arrives at that moment and Ruby puts on an act, claiming that Alejandro was trying to force
14:01himself on her. Alejandro tries to defend himself and gets punched in the face by his foolish friend.
14:08And just like that, their friendship is over. The cowardly traders plan to run away to Puerto Rico
14:15and get married. Maribel arrives at that moment and catches them together.
14:23Christina catches her shameless sister sneaking away in the middle of the night, invokes karma to punish
14:30her, and gives Ruby a farewell slap across the face. Ruby's mother is basically an amoeba with no purpose in
14:38this film. The only times she opens her mouth are to say that the kettle isn't hot and, once,
14:45to ask Ruby not to speak badly about Maribel.
14:50The Chernobyl lovebirds are already living their peaceful little life in Puerto Rico.
14:55And once again, we see a dark-haired Ruby turning blonde. I guess having dark hair was synonymous with
15:02being poor, right? Because all Ruby had to do was become rich and immediately pour peroxide all over
15:09her head. At least in 2004, they changed that tradition and gave the diva curls instead.
15:16Meanwhile, in less beachy surroundings, Alejandro is advancing in his medical career,
15:22and the extremely annoying nurse Eloisa reappears, much to my dismay.
15:27But fortunately, starting with the 2004 telenovela, they finally buried this fool of a character and
15:35never dug her up again. Maribel goes to visit a friend in the hospital, determined to end her
15:41mourning and start working there as a volunteer. There, she meets Alejandro's goofy doctor friend,
15:47who falls in love with her at first sight. Alejandro offers Maribel the ward for invalid children.
15:53I can't believe they actually referred to them that way, especially because Alejandro himself
15:59got upset with Ruby at the beginning of the film when she called Maribel an invalid. Anyway,
16:06Dr. Goofball was in charge of the ward, and that's how he and Maribel start getting closer.
16:14Ruby dresses like a banana and stares at the sea from her balcony, completely bored.
16:20Cesar arrives and promises that they will soon make important friends, then finishes cheering
16:26up his wife by telling her that he bought the house she chose and even put it in her name.
16:32It doesn't take long for Ruby to start throwing huge parties at home, which deeply annoys her husband.
16:38She tells the fool that she has just lost $200 playing poker, and he simply takes the money
16:45out of his pocket and gives it to her. But how long could that possibly remain Ruby's reality?
16:52The diva becomes increasingly addicted to casino roulette, while her husband tries to warn her that
16:58she will eventually gamble away even her underwear. Ruby receives a letter from Christina informing her
17:04that their mother has died. And, unlike the original version, this Ruby is genuinely shaken by the news.
17:11This is the first glimpse of humanity we see in the character.
17:16Ruby cries because her sister blamed her for their mother's death, but Cesar says his mother-in-law
17:22was going to die anyway. Even so, this version doesn't cancel the party that was supposed to
17:28take place that very night. Maribel's cowardly suitor tries to gather the courage to confess his
17:35feelings. Alejandro encourages him, and the man finally finds the courage to speak.
17:41He basically blurts it all out in the woman's face. Maribel, I'm very much in love with you,
17:47and I want to get married. And then he runs away. Honestly, could you fall in love with this
17:53overgrown boy? I found it incredibly unsexy, but she liked it.
17:59Cesar soon starts demanding that his wife put her uterus to work, but she mocks him. When he says he
18:05wants a child to bring warmth to their home, she laughs and replies that they already live in the
18:11tropics. And Ruby says he is a man with vulgar desires and that she isn't going to deform her
18:18beautiful body. He repeats the same idiotic line from the other version. I married a woman, not a
18:26mannequin. I've always dreamed of having a child, and you're going to have to give me one. Just like
18:33Arturo from the 2010 version of Teresa, another disciple of these idiots. The hypocrite even accuses
18:40his wife of having unforgivable selfishness. And now I finally understand where Wikipedia got that
18:47claim that Cesar suffered an accident in the 1968 telenovela. That doesn't happen in the telenovela at
18:54all. It happens in the film. Someone watched the film, thought it was the telenovela, and went there
19:01to write nonsense. At the hospital, Ruby is informed that her husband may become paralyzed.
19:07Meanwhile, Maribel tells her now fiancé that she wants to have surgery after they return from their
19:13honeymoon. And just like the other fool, he doesn't want his wife to have surgery at all because he
19:19accepts her as she is. Unlike the first Alejandro, this one supports the other macho man's mission
19:26to make their friend give up on having the surgery. Here, the husband's attitude of accepting his wife
19:33as she was, without the decision being hers alone, was portrayed as the act of a great man.
19:39But today, it's crystal clear that this was just another huge display of sexism in the entire story.
19:46While her husband wastes away in the hospital, Ruby dances the cha-cha-cha at sunset. Or maybe the
19:53merengue. Or salsa. I don't know a damn thing about dancing. But the diva is basically performing
20:00a mating dance for a new target. Unlike the first telenovela, the film makes it clear that Ruby cheats
20:08on her sick husband. Not for pleasure, but for convenience. But this Ruby is also addicted to
20:14gambling. She becomes desperate when she no longer has credit for her little casino chips.
20:20She loses at the casino and then goes to ask her lover for more money. He uses her like toilet
20:26paper
20:27and cruelly discards her after she has served her purpose, saying goodbye by announcing that he is
20:33returning to Buenos Aires. Ruby is stunned because she isn't used to being used by men.
20:38Cesar is now back home, but he is in a wheelchair. He needs surgery, but the doctor is hesitant.
20:46Cesar wants to sell the house, the jewelry, and everything else necessary so they can find a doctor
20:53abroad who might be able to operate on him. Ruby tries to convince him to return to Mexico and ask
20:59his parents for help. Faced with her husband's insistence, she is forced to reveal that she lost
21:05everything gambling. Not even the furniture in the house belongs to them anymore. I confess I never
21:11imagined there was a version of Ruby addicted to gambling, and this film treats Maribel like
21:17complete garbage to such an extent that it doesn't even show her wedding. During a conversation between
21:23Alejandro and Eloisa, we learn that she got married, and then the character is simply discarded.
21:29It was only from the 2004 telenovela onward that Maribel became a much more relevant character.
21:36Anyway, Ruby is waiting for the doctor in his office to ask for help with her husband's problem.
21:42At first, he acts indifferent, but when he learns that his friend has gone bankrupt,
21:47he finally gives in. The friend's reunion is the same as in the original telenovela.
21:52They reconcile, and Cesar is admitted to the clinic where Alejandro works.
21:57One day, at a bar, while the owner of the clinic offers Alejandro the position of general director,
22:03he sees Ruby with one of her lovers. She sets up a trap to catch him alone,
22:09pretending that she wants news about her hospitalized husband. Alejandro says she shouldn't care so much
22:15since she's cheating on her husband behind his back. Ruby accuses the doctor of being jealous,
22:21but he denies it. Ruby asks Alejandro to forget the past and be less of an asshole toward her.
22:29But Ruby doesn't give up and even follows Alejandro to his house. She insists that she is in love with
22:35him. He tells her to leave, and she accuses him of being afraid of discovering that he has always
22:41desired her, just like every other man. And he gives in to temptation. So yes, this one has already
22:49started cheating on his friend. This Cesar's karma is coming full circle. He cheated on his fiancé,
22:55who had a disability in her leg, and ended up unable to walk. He cheated on his fiancé with her
23:01best
23:01friend, and now he was being cheated on by his own best friend. The day before the surgery, Alejandro
23:08tells Ruby that they will have to separate. But she doesn't want that, and says that, for the first time,
23:14she truly loves someone. Ruby suggests that Cesar's death would solve everything. Alejandro gets furious,
23:22and says that it isn't too late to kill Ruby, something he should have done a long time ago.
23:28And I screamed in shock when I saw this man start beating her. It's not like he gave her just
23:33one
23:34slap, which would already have been bad enough. He turns into a full-on slapping machine.
23:39Notice how Alejandro was really heavily romanticized starting with 2004, because up until this point,
23:47he was nothing but one enormous, bitter piece of shit. The one in the film is definitely the worst
23:53version of the character. Moments before the surgery, Ruby confesses that she is in love with
23:59another man, while the gossiping nurse presses her ear against the door to listen. The patient loses his
24:05will to live when he discovers that his best friend is cheating on him and dies on the operating table.
24:11But while operating, the friend who gave him such an impressive set of horns is tormented by Ruby's
24:17voice inside his head. And in the film, we can say that Alejandro really did make it easier for Cesar
24:24to die,
24:25since he delayed injecting the adrenaline and trying to revive him. Later, Eloisa confesses what she heard
24:33behind the door. And the doctor removes all responsibility from his own shoulders and
24:38dumps everything on Ruby. This version of Alejandro is an abuser of women and a murderer. That's
24:45undeniable, especially because he took two lives in less than 24 hours. After letting his friend die,
24:52he goes after Ruby and places all the blame on her, saying that she tormented his thoughts and took
24:58away the will to live from his foolish, cuckolded friend. He tries to kill her by strangling her,
25:04but she manages to free herself from his hands. However, she ends up tripping over a wire and
25:10falling backward. And that's how the accident happens in the film. Two deaths brought about by
25:16Alejandro's actions. Ruby reports him to the police, but only to make him come to the hospital and forgive
25:22her. In fact, the film never makes it explicit that Ruby died, because we only see Alejandro
25:29leaving after forgiving her. But it is strongly implied that the diva really did become devil
25:34barbecue. And once again, the macho man gets his happy ending with that unbearable nurse.
25:40Did you enjoy seeing the supposed leading man walk away with his hands completely clean? Because I hated
25:46it. But that's it. We've finished the analysis and summary of yet another of the many versions of
25:52the telenovela Ruby. And in the next video, we'll talk about the best-known version which came out
25:58after this story had been put on ice for more than 30 years.
